Background / History

Yusuke's disciple

Itachi was recognized by Fugaku as the Uchiha Clan's future hope from a young age. After observing Yusuke spar with Fugaku, he developed a strong desire to become a powerful shinobi. Fugaku subsequently asked Yusuke to teach him, beginning a mentorship that shaped both Itachi's abilities and worldview. 7 8

He trained with Yusuke alongside Izumi and Kabuto. Even as a child, he could redirect three thrown kunai with another three so that all six struck separate targets; he described the technique as a spontaneous idea inspired by Izumi's practice. 15

After joining a genin team, Itachi grew close to captain Mizunuki Yuki and teammates Izumo Tenma and Inari Shinji. An attack killed Yuki and Tenma, gravely wounded Shinji, and awakened Itachi's Sharingan. Yusuke comforted him afterward, recognizing that the loss had forced him to confront death too early. 31

Yusuke later used the trolley problem to challenge Itachi's belief in sacrificing few lives to save many. Itachi ultimately accepted that life could not be reduced to numbers and that no one had the right to kill one person for the benefit of five. 32

Uchiha crisis

Itachi trained with Shisui, whom he regarded as a close friend, but their loyalties diverged when Shisui accepted Konoha's order to annihilate the Uchiha Clan. 16 53

When he noticed Uchiha returning from missions without receiving new assignments and unfamiliar figures around the clan compound, Itachi interrupted a date with Izumi to evacuate vulnerable clan members. He instructed Soichiro to gather the clan's combat forces and use Fugaku's name to organize the evacuation, while his Phantom Crow Clones searched for Fugaku. 53 55

Fugaku died during the conflict with Danzō and Shisui, entrusting his family to Itachi. Itachi intervened to save Shisui from Danzō, drove Danzō back with Amaterasu, and later subjected him to Tsukuyomi. 66 68

Following Shisui's death, Itachi learned from Yusuke that Mangekyō use steadily destroys the user's eyesight. He agreed to fuse Fugaku's eyes with his own and supported Fugaku's final appointment of Yusuke as the new Uchiha clan head. 70 75

Military leadership

After Fugaku's death, Itachi became acting head of the Uchiha household and rejected elder Kenjiro's attempt to use him as a figurehead. 73

During the Kumogakure conflict, he led Uchiha forces effectively despite his age, defeated the elite force led by Dodai and Two-Tails jinchūriki Yugito, and captured Yugito alive. 92 96

By age seventeen, Itachi was the effective head of the Konoha Military Police Force, with Izumi serving as his assistant. 118

He and Izumi confronted Orochimaru and Sasori during the attack on Team Kakashi. Their combined assault was unable to overcome Orochimaru's Ice Release and Eight Branches Technique, forcing them to withdraw. 120 121

During Akatsuki's assault on Konoha, Itachi fought Kakuzu and later used Susanoo to capture Kakuzu and defeat Kisame without killing either opponent. He chose imprisonment because he considered powerful enemy shinobi valuable assets and sources of intelligence. 155 163

Personality

Itachi is unusually mature and observant from childhood. At six, he could already perceive the political pressure crushing Fugaku and the danger facing the Uchiha Clan. 8

He is deeply protective of his family and clan. He abandoned personal time with Izumi when he suspected an attack, secured the evacuation of civilians, and refused Shisui's demand that he abandon the clan for Konoha's leadership. 53 55

Yusuke's instruction led Itachi away from the ideology of sacrificing the clan for the village. He chose instead to protect the Uchiha and the people important to him, while accepting that the village itself was not synonymous with its corrupt leadership. 32 70
