Background / History
The Inner Sect is the point at which Guiyuan Sect disciples are regarded as genuine members worthy of focused cultivation. By contrast, Outer Sect disciples are treated as expendable candidates; only a minority among the tens of thousands can ultimately advance. Inner Sect and true disciples receive preferential treatment, including Trading Hall discounts. 4 49
The sect distinguishes sharply between disciples who enter before and after the age of sixteen. Disciples who develop Internal Force before turning sixteen enter the Inheritance Sequence, while overage disciples must prove their combat value through the Combat Assessment before entering the Protector Sequence. The latter sequence supplies the sect’s enforcers during territorial expansion, resource disputes, and other dangerous conflicts. 12 46 50
Promotion requires passing the Combat Assessment in the Inner Sect Main Hall. Candidates face three puppets with combat power comparable to early-stage Mingjin martial artists; the assessment is difficult enough that several Internal Force disciples fail it. Overage candidates are forbidden from using Internal Force-level martial arts during the test and may be disqualified and expelled for doing so. 46 48 49
Zhang Su passed the assessment by destroying all three puppets with one sword strike and was immediately promoted. He entered the Inner Sect as an ordinary disciple in the Protector Sequence. 49 50
Although Protector Sequence disciples were traditionally viewed as inferior to Inheritance Sequence disciples and had never produced a Sect Heavenly Pride, Zhang Su overturned that precedent. After his exploits in the Hengshan County conflict and the Heavenly Pride Trial, he was recognized as Guiyuan Sect’s fourth Inner Sect Heavenly Pride. 50 106 128 131
Zhang Su’s ascent beyond Guiyuan Sect did not sever his connection to the Inner Sect. After becoming an Upper Sect Personal Disciple and receiving authority over the Three Ridges Region, he returned to Guiyuan Sect, sought its elders’ and disciples’ assistance in establishing his regional foothold, and used his status and strength to compel Jingyuan Sect into cooperation. 183 185 186
Structure & Admission
Sequences
| Sequence | Description |
|---|---|
| Protector Sequence | Zhang Su’s sequence upon promotion. It comprises overage disciples who enter by passing the Combat Assessment and are valued primarily for combat power; they serve as the sect’s enforcers in conflicts over territory and resources. Its disciples are graded through combat assessments and may rise from ordinary status to One-, Two-, and Three-Star Disciple ratings. 50 60 61 81 |
| Inheritance Sequence | A more highly valued Inner Sect sequence for disciples promoted before the age of sixteen. It emphasizes cultivation potential and the nurturing of future elders, sect leaders, and core successors. Even its disciples do not easily obtain a Three-Star rating. 50 61 |
The standard Inner Sect ratings are Ordinary Disciple, One-Star Disciple, Two-Star Disciple, and Three-Star Disciple. Sect Heavenly Pride is an exceptional status requiring the Sect Leader’s and elders’ recognition rather than an ordinary rating assessment; it was historically associated almost exclusively with the Inheritance Sequence. 50 63 106
Combat Assessment
| Assessment | Requirement | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Inner Sect promotion | Defeat three same-realm puppets. Overage candidates may not use Internal Force-level martial arts. 46 48 49 | Promotion to ordinary Inner Sect disciple |
| One-Star rating | Defeat ten ordinary same-realm puppets. 49 60 61 | One-Star Disciple |
| Two-Star rating | Defeat ten One-Star Puppets of the same realm. 61 | Two-Star Disciple |
| Three-Star rating | Defeat ten Two-Star Puppets of the same realm. 61 63 | Three-Star Disciple; the Protector Sequence’s highest standard rating |
A One-Star Disciple holds better status, position, and treatment than an ordinary Inner Sect disciple. One-Star ratings are attainable through years of accumulation, but Two-Star disciples are much rarer; Three-Star is considered exceptionally difficult even for the Inheritance Sequence. 49 61
Zhang Su’s later recognition as an Inner Sect Heavenly Pride demonstrated that the Three-Star rating was not an absolute ceiling for a Protector Sequence disciple. The Heavenly Pride Trial exists specifically as an avenue through which the sect’s normal sequence rules may be broken. 63 106 128
Resources & Privileges
- Inner Sect disciples are assigned individual courtyards, unlike the more crowded Outer Sect. 50
- Newly promoted Inner Sect disciples receive free access to the Scripture Pavilion’s second floor and may select two Internal Force-level martial arts. 51
- The Inner Sect houses the Main Hall and Martial Arts Arena, where promotion and Protector Sequence ratings are assessed. 48 49 60
- Inner Sect disciples may seek affiliation with influential factions and martial lineages, though those of the Protector Sequence can face prejudice in recruitment. 50 52 56
- A Protector Sequence Three-Star rating can support a disciple’s bid for scarce cultivation opportunities, such as access to the Fire Melting Cave. 63
- Sect Heavenly Prides receive unrestricted access to the sect’s martial arts, priority supply of resources without requiring contribution points or merit, and may directly apply for rare treasures and cultivation resources. 106 131
- A Heavenly Pride may select an entire mountain peak as a residence, recruit Inner or Outer Sect disciples into a personal force, and bring in outside attendants who receive treatment equivalent to Outer Sect disciples. 132
- Zhang Su named his allotted Heavenly Pride residence Pure Yang Peak, reflecting the Pure Yang Nine-Union Divine Art he cultivated. 132
- Zhang Su’s later position as an Upper Sect Personal Disciple and Warden of the Three Ridges Region created new advancement and service opportunities for Guiyuan Sect personnel who assisted his regional administration. 185 186
