Properties and Limitations
- Magnet Release chakra allows a user to draw Gold Dust from the ground and control its movement and shape 197.
- Gold Dust can serve as a shield, a crushing wave, a field of spikes or a projectile. Rasa also stands atop a suspended mass of it 197 233.
- Obtaining fresh Gold Dust depends on location. Kiyohara finds it harder to refine in a forest than in the desert; permeating sand with chakra is easier than permeating soil 197 201.
- Refinement consumes considerable chakra. Kiyohara stores Gold Dust for later use and continues using Iron Sand when he wants a cheaper combat material 197 198 256.
- High heat can melt Gold Dust and disrupt its magnetic control, as Kiyohara observes during his fight with Rasa 197.
History
Rasa, the Fourth Kazekage, uses Gold Dust in battle and sells part of what he refines to support Sunagakure. During his attack on Konoha’s frontline camp, he raises it from the ground, buries Konoha ninja beneath it and forms defenses against Jiraiya’s attacks 197.
Kiyohara observes Rasa’s chakra flow with his Sharingan and adapts his own Magnet Release to control Gold Dust. He draws a small amount from the ground, then interferes with Rasa’s control and takes some of Rasa’s supply. With Jiraiya’s support, Kiyohara uses the captured Gold Dust to defend himself; Rasa ultimately retreats 197 198.
After learning the method, Kiyohara gathers Gold Dust himself. He sells high-purity material, keeps lower-purity material for combat and donates gold bars to Yakushi Nonō’s orphanage. A later batch sells for 836,000 ryō at a Konoha gold shop 200 256.
