Background
Chen Ye retains the experience of a previous life spent navigating corporate life. Rather than treating fortune-telling as genuine divination, he initially reads clients through their speech, conduct, appearance, and desires; this worldly judgment becomes one of his defining advantages over other cultivators. 12
He becomes the disciple of Mo Ci, a devilish cultivator nearing death. Rather than allowing his master’s soul to disperse, Chen Ye refines Mo Ci into a white Ten Thousand Soul Banner of his own making. His choice establishes both his unusual approach to devilish cultivation and his refusal to abandon those close to him. 1 2
After entering Cui County in the guise of a young Daoist, Chen Ye builds a reputation through staged fortune-telling, cures Wang Sanqi’s father, and gains Su Chunyi’s attention. Their exchange gives him the materials needed to condense his qi sea and introduces him to the Qinghe Sword Sect. 9 11 12 17
Chen Ye later develops the Yellow Springs Sect in the Northern Frontier, using Fengdu City as a refuge and administrative center for yin souls, barbarians, rogue cultivators, and other followers. He seeks to establish rules in which good and evil receive consequences, with ghost officials enforcing judgment in the afterlife. 135 164 171
Appearance
Chen Ye appears as a remarkably handsome young man, seemingly under twenty during his early cultivation. Spiritual-energy marrow cleansing and later the Ginseng Fruit’s innate wood spiritual energy leave him with an otherworldly, almost divine appearance that draws attention from mortals and cultivators alike. 27 71 192
- Sword-like brows and starry eyes; repeatedly described as exceptionally handsome. 71
- His spiritual radiance can leave ordinary people briefly dazed when they first see him. 28 31
- Often covers his face to avoid unwanted attention. 28
- Can alter his physical form through the Eight-Nine Profound Art, including taking animal, insect, flood-dragon, and divine-soul forms. 255 371 511 532
- Wears a shape-changing black dharma robe recovered from the Abyss of Return. 268
Personality
Chen Ye is intensely inquisitive and refuses to accept cultivation practices merely because tradition endorses them. He studies the principles behind pills, formations, soul arts, body refinement, and secret techniques, often reconstructing flawed methods into forms that suit him better. 6 42 75 255
Despite wielding devilish artifacts and being willing to act ruthlessly against genuine threats, he consistently rejects needless cruelty. He refuses to torture the banner’s vengeful spirits for power, protects civilians and rogue cultivators, and repeatedly seeks to turn destructive arts toward healing or restoration. 24 99 460
His greatest non-cultivation talent is reading people and managing complicated social situations. He can flatter, negotiate, expose hypocrisy, and construct convincing personas when necessary, but prefers not to deceive people he considers friends. 5 12 360
Chen Ye recognizes that direct combat is not his strongest skill. In battle, he can become overloaded by too many options and slow to react; he compensates through preparation, formations, divination, powerful treasures, allies, and overwhelming spiritual reserves. 111 275 288
