Background / History

Before losing his power, Yu Xiaogang was a Soul Grand Master whose cultivation had stagnated at level 29 despite decades of practice and the use of rare treasures. His innate soul power was only half a level, and he believed that obtaining a Spirit Bone could force a breakthrough to Soul Elder. 5

He developed and promoted the “Ten Core Competencies of Martial Souls,” drawing on material he had read in Martial Soul Hall’s library. He later used Tang San’s successful absorption of the Mandala Snake’s spirit ring as proof for his Martial Soul Mimicry Theory. 5 11

Yu Xiaogang accompanied Tang San to obtain his first spirit ring in the Soul Hunting Forest. There, he encountered Yao Xuan in Emperor Auspicious Beast form. Recognizing the beast from old records and believing it would yield a guaranteed Spirit Bone, he attempted to kill it with Luo Sanpao. 4 5

Appearance

Yu Xiaogang is a middle-aged man usually dressed in a gray robe. He is repeatedly described as greasy, disheveled, ordinary-looking, and increasingly decadent after his defeat. 4 26

Personality

Yu Xiaogang is highly conscious of his low cultivation and damaged reputation. His encounter with Yao Xuan reveals his greed for a Spirit Bone, which he sees as a way to escape his level-29 bottleneck. 5

He presents himself as an unmatched authority on martial souls and seeks recognition through teaching gifted disciples. When Yao Xuan defeats Tang San, Yu Xiaogang tries to recruit Yao Xuan as a second disciple, imagining that raising two future Titled Douluo would restore his prestige. 27

His pride is fragile. The loss of his martial soul, soul power, and manhood causes him to collapse mentally, attempt suicide on multiple occasions, and retreat into drinking. Tang San’s loyalty eventually gives him a renewed purpose: training Tang San to avenge them both. 10 11 19 34

Martial Soul: Luo Sanpao

Luo Sanpao was Yu Xiaogang’s mutated martial soul, a light-purple creature resembling a dog-pig hybrid. It contained a trace of Golden Sacred Dragon bloodline. 4 5
