Background / History

Hill is an ancient elf druid with over a thousand years of experience. He witnessed both Netheril’s founding era and its later age, giving him extensive knowledge of elven history, Druidic inheritance, and the political differences between elves and humans. 198

Before joining Borne’s circle, Hill lived in relative isolation. He noticed that Hubwick possessed an incomplete Druid inheritance and attempted to guide him, but Hubwick mocked him; the resulting embarrassment kept both men from revisiting the matter for years. 127

Lehman recruited Hill for the Lehman Trading Company after offering substantial payment for his help accelerating magical-plant growth. Hill initially refused because he opposed forcing natural growth for profit, but agreed partly so Little Iger could accompany him. 127

Appearance

Hill is a scruffy, elderly Green Elf whose unkempt appearance contrasts sharply with his power and long experience. 127 129

  • Frequently described as dusty, disheveled, or poorly groomed. 127 292
  • Can transform into a giant mountain eagle for travel. 238 292
  • Carries a vine staff during his work and experiments. 312

Personality

Hill is blunt, irritable, and prone to calling Borne a brat, especially when Borne immediately assigns him work after a journey. Despite his complaints, he consistently assists Borne’s projects and protects those around him. 292 293

As a druid, he is deeply concerned with natural balance and the consequences of uncontrolled power. He warns Borne against reckless spell experimentation, dangerous military magic, necromancy, and forbidden technologies such as Deep Spawn. 144 300 317 339

Hill is also highly curious. Working with Borne repeatedly challenges his traditional beliefs about magic, nature, and technology, gradually reshaping his own Path of Nature. 293 301 329

Abilities & Skills

Druidic Spellcasting and Nature Control

Hill is a powerful druid capable of manipulating plants, casting divine spells, and employing nature-based combat techniques.

  • Restrained a level 17–18 mutated Goblin Lord with vines. 302
  • Restored movement to apparently lifeless Blackroot Treant logs and exposed the magical cultivation system beneath them. 292
  • Uses plant growth and natural power to assess mutations, identify contamination, and manage magical plants. 292 293
  • Casts protective and cleansing divine spells, including 2nd-circle Protection from Poison, 3rd-circle Dispel Magic, and 4th-circle Purifying Aura. 316 339
  • His natural power can erupt violently under emotional strain, causing dense plants to grow around him. 317

Beast Instinct and Spiritual Perception

Hill’s permanently active Beast Instinct gives him unusual awareness of living creatures and magical abnormalities.

  • Detected Borne’s conflicting powers before Borne explained them. 294
  • Can sense the emotions of most living creatures. 311
  • Perceived the fear and emotional state of the big-headed mutant Goblin during soul experiments. 311 313
  • Can sense the wails of Goblin souls at close range due to his approaching transformation in life level. 311

Transformation

Hill can assume the form of a giant eagle, allowing rapid long-distance travel.

  • Flew from Jeff’s residence after learning of the Goblin threat. 238
  • Returned to Borne’s camp as a mountain eagle before transforming back into his usual elven form. 292

Druidic Cultivation and Teaching

Hill possesses extensive knowledge of magical botany, magical plants, and Druidic development.

  • Was hired to catalyze the growth of magical plants in the Alchemical Workshop. 127
  • Identified the cause of the Blackroot Treant mutation as Goblin blood added to the nutrient solution. 292
  • Guided Iger toward understanding nature, then recognized Iger’s awakened Heart of Nature. 297
  • Helped Borne experiment with treant propagation and division as defensive measures. 293
  • Plans to select and teach promising refugee children alongside Iger. 344

Magical Lore and Languages

Hill is an experienced scholar of elven, dwarven, and Druidic traditions.

  • Provided Borne with Mythal materials written in ancient Elven script after trading a Mother Tree sapling for the knowledge. 266 293
  • Helped translate ancient Dwarf texts concerning Deep Spawn and soul forging. 300 301
  • Taught elven magic to Plock Tief in Plock’s youth. 344
  • Possesses enough historical knowledge to explain the fall of the Shanatar Empire through the misuse of Deep Spawn. 301

  • Jeff — Fellow elf druid and old acquaintance. Jeff recognizes Hill’s impending Archdruid advancement and informs him about the Druid associations. 237 238
  • Elven King Kavorum — Negotiation counterpart. Kavorum agrees to trade Mythal knowledge for Hill’s Mother Tree sapling. 266
  • Plock Tief — Former student in elven magic. Hill recalls Plock as a renowned young genius and calls his understanding of spell formulas second only to Borne’s. 344

Story Role / Major Arcs

Alchemical Workshop

Borne’s Adviser and Protector

Hill becomes one of Borne’s most reliable advisers. He cautions Borne to slow down, helps improve his modified divine spellwork, protects the explanation behind the mass-produced spell potions, and joins Hussein in defending against hostile forces. 137 144 148 174

Mother Tree and Mythal Exchange

Concerned with the Goblin threat and the balance of nature, Hill returns to the Druid Circle and travels toward elven territory. He uses a Mother Tree sapling to obtain ancient Mythal knowledge, then brings the materials back to Borne. 238 262 266 293

Enorok City and the Goblin Crisis

Hill returns after fighting an incarnation of a false god and helps resolve the Blackroot Treant incident. He supports Borne’s treant-defense plans, captures a Goblin Lord, assists in the Underdark, and remains behind to observe and oversee a newly subdued Goblin tribe. 292 302 318
