Background
The Witch Tribe is one of the two great races of the Endless Forest, alongside the Demon Race. They are close to nature, revere the power of heaven and earth, and seek to turn land cultivated by humans back into forest. Their conflict with the Demon Race is largely territorial, while they also view human lands as a target for expansion. 117
Their relationship with humanity has changed repeatedly across the ages. In more remote antiquity, the Witch Tribe and Demon Race were said to have been enslaved by humans; in ancient times, humanity itself became enslaved by the Demon Race. 117
The tribe claims an inheritance extending back to the opening of heaven and earth. Its Ancestral Shamans preserve history, bloodlines, and knowledge through the totems, including knowledge of events and figures from ancient eras. 884
Appearance
Ordinary Witch Tribe members are commonly described as powerfully built forest hunters who wear beast hides and ride Demon Beasts. Their physical strength, inherited bloodlines, and affinity with the wilderness distinguish them from human cultivators. 117 119
- Many warriors wear beast-hide clothing and travel on Demon Beasts, including flying mounts. 117
- Members of the Giant Rock Spirit Jade Branch dwell in mountain caves and train their children to climb cliffs from a young age. 117
- Elders generally wear long robes rather than beast hides; their robe patterns identify their respective tribes. 469
- Witchcraft inscriptions may be carved directly onto a member's body with beast blood. 119 157
Society and Organization
Totemic hierarchy
| Rank / Group | Role |
|---|---|
| Ancestral Shamans | Hidden rulers of the Witch Tribe. They govern major tribes through the twelve totems, can monitor their condition, and can rapidly send down their true bodies through them. 883 |
| Witch Saints | Masters of the twelve divisions. Nine gathered after three divisions were lost to the Blood Moon. 758 |
| Sacred Elders / Venerable Elders | Senior powers entrusted with major campaigns and tribal decisions; several have cultivation at or beyond the highest levels seen in war against humanity. 171 499 504 |
| Elders | The Witch Tribe designation for Spirit Transformation cultivators. Their divine souls house a totem, which becomes the origin of their power. 564 |
| Apostles / Envoys | High-ranking agents acting in the name of a major totem, such as Lei Dong of the Divine Bird Totem. 164 |
| High Priests and Priests | Powerful tribal leaders and ritual specialists. A Nascent Soul cultivator may be called a priest. 117 |
| Chieftains and tribesmen | Leaders and ordinary members of individual branches and smaller tribes. 117 161 |
Divisions and tribes
The Witch Tribe has twelve great Witch Divisions, each divided into branches and smaller tribes. The Ghost Division, Beast Division, and Spirit Jade Division were among the forces deployed during the initial invasion of Qingyun Prefecture. 117
Known Witch Tribe groups include:
- Divine Bird Tribe / Divine Bird Totem — A major fire-aligned lineage associated with the Phoenix Ancestral Shaman and the Nirvana Sacred Elder. 564 581 651
- Ghost Division — Led in part by the strategist You Baiyin; it withheld reinforcements during the defeat outside Qingyun Border City. 169
- Beast Division — Includes the Joy Beast Branch and the Frenzied Beast Tribe. 117 129 171
- Spirit Jade Division — Includes the Giant Rock Spirit Jade Branch, a mountain-dwelling branch that attacked the Li Family directly. 117
- Moon Dragon Tribe — Its Golden Dragon totem originates from a Witch Tribe member who devoured an entire golden dragon. 651
- Thick Earth Tribe — A mountain-centered lineage with earth- and stone-related inheritance, noted for earth-escape arts, durable bodies, and the forging of witch bones from earth and stone spirits. 883
- Fang Division — A division once preparing a force capable of annihilating the Li Family. 239
Totems and Witchcraft
Twelve Totems
The Witch Tribe's civilization is centered on twelve supreme totems. Legend states that when the gods once worshipped by the ancient Witch Tribe died, twelve drops of blood remained and became the twelve totems that gave rise to the tribe. 564
Each major totem preserves a bloodline authority tied to a natural power. The Divine Bird lineage possesses ultimate flame, while the Moon Dragon lineage grants affinity for water. Totems strengthen their corresponding bloodlines and support inheritance across generations. 564 758
- Totems receive faith transmitted through Witch Tribe bloodlines. 171
- They can serve as the foundation for artifacts, formations, settlements, and combat techniques. 171 242
- Ancestral Shamans use them to oversee tribes and descend their power or true bodies. 883
- Destroying a tribe's totem is considered vital to breaking its morale and resistance. 500
- The Divine Bird and Moon Dragon totems later lost their divine radiance, while the Heavenly Oracle Totem suffered severe damage. 883
Thirteenth Totem
A thirteenth totem, Eternal, emerged after countless years. The Ancestral Shamans regarded it as a new bloodline totem comparable to the twelve highest-ranked totems. 758
The later thirteenth pillar was connected to the bloodline of the first generation of Witch Ancestors and to the ability to contain and fuse multiple inheritances. 1000
Witchcraft
Witch Tribe witchcraft is bloodline-based and differs from human Dao arts, though both paths can reach similar heights. Members can inscribe witchcraft onto their bodies with beast blood, allowing them to cast spells more quickly than immortal cultivators. 119 504
- Nature manipulation — Coordinated witchcraft can command mountains, rocks, vegetation, clouds, and mist across a battlefield. 498
- Forest conversion — Ritual bonfires, dances, and erected totems can cause flowers and grass to spread over human land, gradually transforming it into forest. 117
- Totem invocation — Totems can summon beast phantoms, house beast souls, and deploy them in battle. 171
- Formation arts — The Heaven-Obeying Witchcraft Formation is a major tribal formation built through bloodline faith, totems, and a spirit vein. 180
- Body-based cultivation — The Witch Tribe takes the body as its foundation, with witch bones serving as a core source of inheritance and power. 507
- Longevity and cultivation — Witch Tribe members live more than ten times longer than humans, but generally cultivate more slowly. 173 202
Witch Bones
Witch bones are remnants of Witch Tribe cultivators that can strengthen bloodlines and preserve inherited witch arts. A Nascent Soul sacrificer's bone can be fused into a body to inherit secret witch arts, although such fusion is dangerous for those below Nascent Soul. 171
- Witch bones are highly valued by human cultivators for their spiritual and material uses. 507
- Fusing many witch bones can alter a cultivator's body and increase their advancement rate. 564
- The Iron Gate Seven used Witch Tribe bloodlines, bones, and totems to become indistinguishable from true Witch Tribe members. 564
Settlements and Territory
Witch Tribe settlements are generally organized around their totems and designed to remain integrated with the natural environment.
- Star Soul City — A city formed by an alliance of more than twenty Witch Tribe tribes. Its walls are living vines gathered by priests communing with heaven and earth, and its inhabitants live within the vine structures. 242
- Endless Forest camps — After their retreat from Qingyun Prefecture, the Witch Tribe established camps around the Endless Forest while preparing another assault. 171
- Mountain bases — Witch Tribe forces concealed large populations and supplies inside hollow mountains, including a hidden force of 500,000 members near the Southern Lands. 497
- Ancestral Shaman Sacred Land — A forbidden holy land deep within the Endless Forest, containing the twelve suspended totems and accessible only to Sacred Elders. 883
History
Invasion of Qingyun Prefecture
The Witch Tribe entered Qingyun Prefecture through forces from the Ghost, Beast, and Spirit Jade Divisions. Their strategy focused on attacking ordinary towns while bypassing major sects, intending to encircle stronger powers later. 117
The Giant Rock Spirit Jade Branch directly attacked the Li Family, relying on its mountain-raised warriors, stone beasts, totems, and witchcraft formation. 117 121 The invasion escalated into a prolonged confrontation at Qingyun Border City, where six divisions gathered against Li Dalong and the defenders of Merit City. 164
Qingyun Prefecture ultimately ambushed and routed the six divisions. Hundreds of thousands of Witch Tribe members were slain, while Lei Dong and the surviving forces retreated. 168 169 170
Renewed assault and elder intervention
After the defeat at Qingyun, Lei Dong appealed to a Venerable Elder for aid against the Li Family. Three Witch Tribe elders, led by the Spirit Transformation cultivator Moon Goddess Bai Yue, later entered the conflict. 171 173
Bai Yue burned her Primordial Spirit while fleeing an attack from the Li Family Ancestor and died; the elders Falling Star and Duke Soul Spirit escaped afterward. 176
War within the Qing Imperial Dynasty
The Witch Tribe later exploited weaknesses in the Qing Imperial Dynasty's borders. Qiyang Prefecture fell after its defenses were neglected and information about the attack was concealed, allowing Witch Tribe forces to spread through the dynasty's heartland. 466
Rather than maintain a single front, the invading forces scattered through the dynasty, blending into its territory and gradually consuming it while avoiding supply-line dependence. 466 497
At the Western Border, the Witch Tribe deployed a colossal ancient tree carrying elders and warriors. Li Tianyue's Blood-Clad Army fought the invasion, but the Western Border fell after she was killed in battle. 469 470 473
Central Heaven City campaign
Yuan Liang secretly gathered 500,000 Witch Tribe members for decades in a hollow mountain near the Southern Lands, intending to strike Central Heaven City and sever the human forces' retreat. 497
Three hundred thousand Witch Tribe warriors attacked Central Heaven City, using coordinated witchcraft powerful enough that even Li Xinnian, a Void Refinement cultivator, did not dare face it directly. 498
Blood Moon crisis and alliance against the Immortal Court
When the Blood Moon and the Immortal Court reappeared, three of the Witch Tribe's twelve divisions were seized, leaving their members as retainers of immortals and displacing survivors. 758
After severe losses among the great powers of every race, the human race and Witch Tribe agreed to a thousand-year mutual-aid treaty against the Immortal Court. The Demon Race did not fully join the agreement. 883
Relationships
- Human race / Qing Imperial Dynasty — Long-standing enemies whose wars range from border conflict to full-scale invasions of the Central Plains. 176 466
- Azure Cloud Li Family — A major human adversary that repelled the six divisions from Qingyun, killed Witch Tribe elders, damaged totems, and later became involved in the fate of the thirteenth totem. 170 176 564
- Demon Race — Rival great race of the Endless Forest; the two struggle over territory but have sometimes cooperated against outside threats. 117 758
- Immortal Court — A later existential threat that seized three Witch Tribe divisions through the Blood Moon and forced the tribe toward cooperation with humanity. 758 883
- Iron Gate Seven — Human descendants of the Li Family who fused Witch Tribe bloodlines, witch bones, and totems until ordinary Witch Tribe members could no longer identify them as human. 564
Known Members
- Lei Dong — Apostle of the Divine Bird Totem, later an elder; commanded forces against Qingyun Prefecture and repeatedly sought to eliminate the Li Family. 164 171 469
- You Baiyin — Ghost Division genius who chose not to reinforce the six divisions during their defeat at Qingyun Border City. 169
- Moon Goddess Bai Yue — Spirit Transformation elder who died after burning her Primordial Spirit to flee the Li Family Ancestor. 173 176
- Falling Star — Witch Tribe elder who survived Bai Yue's defeat and later acted under the elders' invasion orders. 176 465
- Nirvana Sacred Elder — Senior Divine Bird Tribe figure associated with Flame Mountain and the Heavenly Fire Great Dao. 472 581
- Huai Fan'er — Venerable elder who disliked war and reflected on the ambitions driving ancient Witch Tribe powers toward conflict. 472
- Yuan Liang — Divine Bird Tribe Sacred Elder and half-step Integration cultivator who prepared the Central Heaven City offensive. 497 504
- Earth Ancestral Shaman — Thick Earth Totem authority who demonstrated extensive knowledge of the Witch Tribe's history and the Li Family's secrets. 884
