Background

Owen studied history at Backlund University and served alongside Cyril as a vice-president of the World Truth Society. After the deaths within the club, he and Cyril were its only surviving members. 5 7

His parents' deaths left him isolated and unfamiliar with close companionship. His father’s posthumous notes introduced him to mysticism, preserved Apprentice-pathway formulas, and concealed much of the family’s history; Owen spent two years seeking further occult knowledge and potion ingredients. 6 7 8

Owen is a descendant of the Abraham family through a branch that separated during his grandfather’s generation. Initially proud of the family’s ancient legacy, he hoped to restore its former glory, though reconnecting with surviving relatives made him understand the scale of the family’s decline and the burden attached to that ambition. 7 8 173 218

His inherited Apprentice-pathway formulas covered Sequence 9 through Sequence 7 and included ancestral admonitions corresponding to acting principles. His father also left a special means of contacting the Council of Elders, originally intended for use after Owen reached Sequence 7. 8

When Verdu re-established contact, he considered taking Owen back to Midseashire. Owen preferred to remain in Backlund, prompting Verdu to investigate his circumstances and social circle rather than leave him without support. 173

Owen is a young, blue-eyed man who adopts an overtly classical look to establish credibility as a diviner. 6 172 134

Personality

Long periods of solitude initially made Owen awkward around others, but he quickly came to trust Cyril as a companion who understood the mystical world. He is earnest, excitable, and romantically drawn to the idea of reviving the Abraham family, even when his inexperience makes him easy to unsettle or mislead. 6 7 8

He is cautious when confronting genuine danger and readily acknowledges the limits of low-sequence Beyonders, yet he repeatedly accepts risky operations when they promise resources or answers. His concern for Cyril remains consistent: he helps plan operations, seeks healing treatment after Cyril is injured, and provides practical support despite being frightened by the situations surrounding them. 13 26 46

Owen values his faith in the God of Steam and Machinery and does not regard belief as something to be casually exchanged, even after relying on another existence’s protection against the full-moon whispers. 38 82

Repeated full-moon episodes weaken his earlier confidence. He comes to understand why his father and grandfather chose ordinary lives and admits that he sometimes regrets his own impulsiveness. Before one episode, he asks Cyril to attempt a rescue first but to shoot him if loss of control becomes unavoidable. 135

As his knowledge grows, Owen recognizes that restoring the Abraham family’s glory is not a task one person can ordinarily accomplish. Being described as the family’s greatest hope for a high-sequence protector leaves him unable to respond, contrasting with his earlier enthusiastic declarations. 258

He remains socially isolated despite these new connections, admitting during Lawrence’s invitation to a Beyonder gathering that he has few friends. Nevertheless, he welcomes Fors into their shared lessons, joking that another student means someone else can share the pressure. 275

As a Seer, Owen studies and performs several forms of divination, using both formal techniques and his own accumulated intelligence. 26 33

Lawrence later teaches Owen occult knowledge directly. When Fors becomes Lawrence’s final student, the two receive lessons together and review the material under his supervision. 275

Bloodline Curse

The Abraham family’s curse manifests most dangerously during full moons. Once Owen became a Beyonder, the Gate’s whispers began to affect him directly, causing agony, loss of control, and grotesque physical changes. 81 101

The honorific prayer Cyril teaches Owen is addressed to “The Sublime from the Unknown,” “The Door Above the Dimensions,” and “The Incarnation of Art and Fantasy.” During his first rescue through this method, Owen is told that he has entered the Shadow of Dimensions, a place beyond reality where the voice cannot reach him. 81

During an unexpected Blood Moon, Owen’s condition deteriorates rapidly, but Cyril initially shelters him through a Black Curtain. A supernatural black record subsequently allows crimson moonlight and the whispers to penetrate the refuge. Owen perceives a crimson, starry figure as his ancestor, and his body begins splitting into strips of flesh and starlight. Cyril turns him into a figure in a portrait and conceals him, while a replacement created from the portrait transforms into an illusory starry gate. 135 136

Cyril later extends full-moon protection to Owen, Lawrence, and Verdu together. Their subsequent discussion distinguishes surviving the whispers from the family’s broader need for a trustworthy high-sequence protector; Lawrence and Verdu explain that the family has already developed a relatively safe method for enduring full moons. 258

Story Role / Major Arcs

World Truth Society

After surviving the deaths surrounding the original World Truth Society, Owen and Cyril take leave from the university and later re-establish the organization as a mutual-support society for exploring mysticism. Owen enthusiastically imagines it one day rivaling the ancient families. 5 8

Changing Pathways

Owen initially intended to consume an Apprentice potion on a full moon, unaware of the danger posed by his Abraham heritage. Cyril persuades him to exchange his inherited Apprentice formulas for the Seer pathway instead, and Owen successfully becomes a Seer. 7 8 26

The exchange gives Owen Seer-pathway formulas through Sequence 5 in return for his Apprentice-pathway formulas through Sequence 7. It also introduces him to the Acting Method, while allowing Cyril to obtain Owen’s prepared Apprentice ingredients. 8 9

Gang and Pirate Operations

Owen assists Cyril in operations against the Blood Axe Gang and Black Wolf Gang through divination, route planning, charms, and backup. The Black Wolf operation yields a share of valuables worth roughly 2,000 pounds, but also exposes him to the True Creator’s lingering corruption. 16 33 38

During the Blood Axe operation, Owen nearly eats an unreal feast before Cyril intervenes. The malice and curses within the tablecloth’s Painting World subsequently leave him terrified and physically weakened; Cyril gives him a healing potion and borrows his gun while searching the house. After their escape, Owen agrees that the dangerous mystical item can be sold and offers to let Cyril use its value toward potion ingredients if necessary. 17 19 21

Bernadette cleanses the contamination Owen acquires during the Black Wolf operation before he and Cyril return home to divide the loot. 38

Later, a Fate Crystal Ball revelation leads Owen and Cyril to infiltrate a pirate ship for Clown and Astrologer potion materials. Owen is affected by the ship’s mental corruption and follows Cyril’s lead in escaping through the Mirror World. 48 51

The vessel belongs to Vice Admiral Hurricane Qilangos. Afterward, Cyril offers Owen his choice of the remaining stolen materials, suggesting that he sell them or have an Artisan turn them into mystical items. Owen declines a share of Qilangos’s Beyonder Characteristic, regarding it as something an unknown powerhouse had given to Cyril rather than part of their jointly stolen haul. 51 52

Healing Cyril

After Cyril is shot, Owen visits Harvest Cathedral to obtain a healing potion and negotiates with the imprisoned Vampire Apothecary. He promises on Cyril’s behalf that Cyril will help obtain the Vampire’s release once healed. The potion proves highly effective, but Owen later experiences spiritual warnings because the promise has become a binding oath witnessed by Mother Earth. Cyril explains the situation and agrees to visit the cathedral. 46 47 52

Abraham Family Contact

After finding a way to endure the full-moon whispers, Owen opens his father’s sealed inheritance with Cyril’s help and writes to the Council of Elders. Verdu’s arrival confirms Owen as the last survivor of his separated family branch and draws him into the Abraham family’s ongoing struggle. 165 171 172 173

Owen contacts the Council before the customary Sequence 7 threshold because he wants to share a way to survive the curse. However, he initially withholds the protective existence’s honorific name because he has not asked permission to disclose it. Cyril mediates when Verdu challenges Owen over exposing family information and relying on a great being. 173

Pursuit of Advancement

Owen continues digesting his Clown potion and gathering materials for a Magician potion while being recognized by Verdu and Lawrence as one of the Abraham family’s greatest hopes for future protection. 258

Verdu offers to accompany him in hunting an Evil-Patterned Black Panther for a needed potion ingredient. Their discussion also makes Owen confront the difference between his former dreams of restoring the family and the practical requirement for a trustworthy high-sequence protector. 258

Occult Lessons and Beyonder Gatherings

Lawrence teaches Owen alongside Fors and invites both students to a gathering open to Beyonders and trusted ordinary people seeking advancement. Owen expresses interest despite having few friends to invite. 275

At a later gathering in the Painting World, Owen completes a transaction by writing his name on a small blackboard. A projected seal divides into two points of light that enter Owen and Cyril, after which Steve approaches Owen with a tray. 286

Lewis Wien’s Death and the Family Bounty

When Cyril reports killing Lewis Wien, Owen explains that Lawrence has provided a bounty consisting of a property in Constant City, the capital of Midseashire, and offers the option of converting it into cash. He also relays Verdu’s interest in purchasing Lewis Wien’s Traveler characteristic because Verdu is considering further advancement. 407

Cyril asks that the bounty be given to Tobias instead, having already obtained his own share of the spoils. He cannot sell the Traveler characteristic at that time because Lewis Wien’s soul has been grazed by Creeping Hunger. 407
