Background

Loki was raised in Asgard by Odin and Frigga alongside Thor, but his discovery that he was born a Frost Giant left him convinced that he could never truly belong among the Aesir. His desire to prove himself and claim the throne fueled his attempted usurpation of Asgard and enduring resentment toward Thor. 150 151 152

Odin had originally intended Loki to become King of Jotunheim and secure peace between the Frost Giants and Asgard. Over time, however, Odin came to regard him as a genuine son. Loki rejected Jotunheim and identified himself with Asgard, whose people and realm he valued despite his contempt for many of its inhabitants. 362

Loki is proud, theatrical, and intensely status-conscious. He seeks recognition as a god, prince, and rightful ruler, often masking insecurity with sarcasm, calculated charm, and a practiced sinister grin. His resentment of Thor stems less from simple hatred than from feeling continually overshadowed by Asgard’s preference for Thor’s direct strength and warrior image. 119 151

Attack on Earth

Loki sends the Destroyer to Earth during Thor’s exile, then later steals the Tesseract, takes Barton and Selvig under mind control, and prepares a Chitauri invasion. He intends to conquer Earth and rule it as king. 80 115 122

Captured in Stuttgart, Loki allows himself to be taken aboard the Helicarrier so that Barton can attack from outside and create disorder among the Avengers. Oaks exposes his plan to provoke Banner into becoming the Hulk by reading Loki’s physical reactions. 120 123

Loki escapes his cell through illusion magic, steals the Mind Scepter, and takes Coulson hostage. After the Battle of New York, he is subdued and returned to Asgard to face judgment for his crimes. 126 134

Baldr’s Resurrection

While imprisoned in Asgard, Loki is approached by Oaks to assist with Odin’s mission concerning Baldr. Loki joins the journey to Alfheim, helps locate Thor’s divine goats, and participates in Frey’s trial against Skoll and Hati. 150 155 157

He accompanies Thor and Oaks into Hel for Baldr’s resurrection. Baldr’s return devastates Loki’s hopes of inheriting the throne and deepens his anxiety over his position within Odin’s family. 161 162

Dark Elf War and the Reality Stone

Loki exposes a disguised Dark Elf infiltrator, alerts Odin to the invasion, and fights alongside Asgardian defenders despite insisting that he is not acting for them. 200 201

When Malekith threatens the Nine Realms during the Convergence, Loki guides Thor, Jane, and Oaks through hidden passages to Earth. He ambushes Malekith in battle and later contains the Aether long enough for Oaks to free Baldr from Hodr. 205 207 208

Afterward, Loki takes the Reality Stone and replaces Odin on Asgard’s throne through illusion magic. 209 210

Impersonation of Odin

While disguised as Odin, Loki neglects crises across the Nine Realms, erects an enormous statue of himself, and stages plays celebrating his own supposed death. Thor and Baldr eventually expose him and learn that Odin had deliberately allowed the deception as part of a larger test. 348 353

Hela’s Return

Loki joins Thor, Baldr, and Oaks after Hela is released from Odin’s seal. He helps defend against her Death Magic, contributes mana to Oaks’s shields, and supports the group with illusions during the battle in Alfheim and later Asgard. 355 356 357 360

Following Hela’s defeat, Odin strips Loki of his right to inherit the Asgardian throne but acknowledges him as his son. Odin then removes Loki’s Frost Giant bloodline, granting him a complete Asgardian body. 361 362

Thanos and the Infinity War

Loki warns Thor and Oaks that Thanos will eventually pursue the Infinity Stones and likely seek a weapon from Nidavellir capable of holding them. 363

When Thanos invades Asgard and captures Frigga, Loki leads him to the Tesseract to save her. He secretly leaves Thor a message to evacuate Eitri and the dwarves, delaying Thanos’s larger plans even as Thanos acquires the Space Stone. 375

After the war, Loki governs Jotunheim and later helps Heimdall organize Asgard’s defenses during Jörmungandr’s attack. By this period, he has gained recognition and respect within Asgard. 394 404

Time City Loki

A Loki variant appears in Time City after the fall of the Sacred Timeline. Unlike the main Loki, this version is isolated from the people he knew in the TVA and fears that the rise of a Kang variant will lead to multiversal war. 448 449
