Appearance
Orochimaru initially appears as a cool, handsome, sharp-looking young man, explicitly contrasted with the more unsettling figure Jiogan remembers from the anime 31.
- Signature expressions: A sinister grin and habitual tongue-flicking 32 34 75.
- Earring: Sways when Jiogan’s Water Palm passes close to his head during their spar 76.
- Laboratory clothing: Changes into a white research coat before continuing his cell-culture experiments 156.
- Combat transformations: Can turn his legs into snake tails and emerge from his own mouth in a fresh, slime-covered body 152.
Personality
Orochimaru treats combat as both entertainment and an opportunity to evaluate talent. During the Chunin Exam, he personally hunts examinees, criticizes the Search Team’s failures, and demands that Jiogan and Might Duy make their resistance interesting. Nevertheless, he recognizes their coordination and praises Jiogan’s practical techniques rather than dismissing him because of his civilian background 33 34.
His interest can develop into genuine professional respect. He recommends Jiogan to Hiruzen, wants him in his Anbu squad, and later welcomes him as his battlefield deputy. He also shows consideration for soldiers’ hardships: when Jiogan returns hungry, Orochimaru arranges food and does not mock his table manners 35 73.
Ambition and intellectual curiosity drive him toward increasingly dangerous research. He desires the Hokage position, becomes obsessed with Hashirama’s power, and proceeds to human experimentation despite repeated deaths. His dealings with Danzō are transactional and distrustful; he openly challenges the older man’s demands and resents being denied information about successful transplantation 73 143 168 213.
Jiogan’s achievements provoke envy without extinguishing Orochimaru’s curiosity. Losing their spar and learning that Jiogan mastered Flying Thunder God leave him weary, but encouragement about his snake-style ninjutsu makes him regard Jiogan as a kindred spirit. Later, Jiogan’s apparent death prompts him to question life’s meaning, while their discussion of the body and spirit gives him a new research direction 76 77 214.
Abilities & Skills
Snake Summoning and Control
- Reconnaissance: Summons white snakes from Ryūchi Cave and controls local snakes to search the Forest of Death 32.
- Giant snake summons: Deploys multiple giant snakes, directs them around Water Palm Prison, and sends them after retreating examinees 33.
- Manda: Summons the giant snake during his second battle with Jiogan. Manda demands fifty sacrifices and withdraws after being injured by Jiogan 75 76.
- Intelligence delivery: Uses a summoned white snake and a sub-scroll left in Konoha to exchange urgent messages with the village 77.
Snake-Style Ninjutsu
- Shadow Snake Hand: Restrains opponents, tightens around struggling targets, and throws Might Duy into a tree. Jiogan later counters it with Water Palm and Water Blade 34 75 151.
- Great Snake Substitute Technique: Produces a new, uninjured body from his mouth, shedding the previous body’s injuries. Orochimaru identifies it as his newly developed variation of substitution 152.
- Many Snakes Manifestation Array: Releases countless snakes carrying blades in their mouths to surround an opponent. Jiogan defeats the array by freezing and shattering it 152.
- Serpentine movement: Transforms his legs into snake tails to close distance while wielding the Kusanagi Sword 152.
Elemental and Defensive Ninjutsu
- Chakra natures: Possesses five chakra natures, although his first fight with Jiogan reveals only part of his repertoire 34.
- Earth Release: Earth Flow Wall: Raises walls from four directions to block Jiogan’s Water Guns; later combines defensive efforts with Jiraiya 34 151.
- Wind Release: Gale Palm: Uses powerful airflow offensively and combines it with Fire Dragon Bullet for a larger fire attack 34 75.
- Rashomon: Summons the barrier in response to the Water Wolf’s enormous spinning Water Ball 152.
- Shadow Clone Technique: Secretly leaves a clone fighting Might Duy while his real body moves behind Jiogan 34.
- Substitution Technique: Escapes Jiogan’s close-range water trap and later avoids a descending Water Palm by leaving a wooden log behind 34 76.
Taijutsu and Swordsmanship
- Fights Jiogan and Might Duy simultaneously with ease during the Chunin Exam and recognizes Duy’s Eight Inner Gates 33.
- Punishes Jiogan’s distraction with a whip kick and uses a kunai to block Water Needles 34.
- Uses the Kusanagi Sword to pierce Jiogan’s Water Shield and follows with twisting, repeated slashes 152.
- His later attacks become substantially harder to counter, but Jiogan’s water control still redirects the sword and evades the follow-up strikes 152.
Hashirama Cell Research and Surgery
- Cell cultivation: Develops a special reagent that reduces Hashirama Cells’ vitality enough to permit some fusion with ordinary cells. Attempts to alter them genetically instead cause necrosis 143.
- Danzō’s arm: Cultivates a Hashirama Cell arm in exchange for Danzō’s funding, staff, and a forbidden technique scroll 211.
- Early limitation: His initial human experiments all fail, with every subject dying 168 213.
- Sharingan compatibility: Learns to investigate the Sharingan’s ability to suppress Hashirama Cells. Experiments on captured one- and two-tomoe Uchiha show only limited tolerance 213 227.
- Kakashi’s transplantation: Performs successive transplants across Kakashi’s body, reaching a thirty-percent replacement ratio. The procedure activates Kakashi’s Mangekyo Sharingan and grants basic Wood Release 227.
Impure World Reincarnation
- Obtains the jutsu from Danzō after completing their exchange for the cultivated arm 211.
- Attempts to summon the supposedly dead Jiogan. The summoning’s failure reveals that Jiogan is still alive 212.
Strategy and Command
- Correctly interprets Kirigakure’s spy purge as preparation for a major operation 53.
- Leads Konoha’s Northern Front, reviews battlefield reports late at night, and briefs Jiogan and the command staff 70 73 77.
- Supports Jiogan’s proposal to form an elite squad targeting Iwagakure’s senior personnel and strong fighters 74.
- Known limitation: Has not mastered Flying Thunder God and reacts with envy when Jiogan succeeds 77.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Sword — His principal named weapon in the later Sannin spar; sharp enough to penetrate Jiogan’s Water Shield 151 152.
- Kunai — Used to deflect Jiogan’s Water Needles during the Chunin Exam 34.
- White snake communication system — Carries scrolls between the front and Konoha through summoning 77.
- Impure World Reincarnation scroll — Received through his bargain with Danzō 211.
- Laboratory equipment — Petri dishes, cultured tissue, special reagents, and an experiment notebook support his cell research 143 227.
- Chiyo’s puppets — Receives part of Jiogan’s spoils for potential use in his research 127.
Relationships
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher and Hokage. Orochimaru recommends Jiogan to him but resents Hiruzen’s decision to assign Jiogan to a different Anbu unit. He later believes Hiruzen tacitly permits his secret experiments 35 73 213.
- Jiogan — Begins as an intimidating examiner, becomes a respected rival and commander to Jiogan’s deputy, and eventually cooperates with him in research and political arrangements. Jiogan helps redirect his thinking about life and the spirit 34 73 214 227.
- Jiraiya — Fellow Sannin and frequent target of his insults. They cooperate closely in battle, but Jiraiya pursues him after his departure from Konoha 35 151 152 232.
- Tsunade — Fellow Sannin and long-standing teammate. She knows little about his classified research; they later defend Jiraiya together while he prepares Sage Mode 143 152.
- Shimura Danzō — Research sponsor and secret collaborator. Danzō supplies funding and staff, while Orochimaru cultivates his arm. Their cooperation is marked by pressure, withheld information, and mutual suspicion 143 211 213.
- Hatake Sakumo — Helped Orochimaru during his Anbu service. Orochimaru cites that history when agreeing not to force Kakashi into experimentation 227.
- Kakashi Hatake — Willing transplant recipient. Orochimaru successfully implants Hashirama Cells and oversees his subsequent recovery 227 228.
- Minato Namikaze — Participates in the agreement surrounding Kakashi’s treatment and Orochimaru’s departure. Afterward, Minato and Jiogan keep Orochimaru’s location secret 227 232.
- Manda — Powerful summoned snake whose abrasive behavior and demand for sacrifices make the relationship openly contentious 75.
History
Chunin Exam Examiner
As chief examiner, Orochimaru leaves the Central Tower and personally sweeps the Forest of Death with snakes. After eliminating fifteen examinees, he learns of an unusually large six-person team and decides to test it despite already reaching an acceptable pass rate 31 32 33.
Jiogan and Might Duy remain behind while their four companions retreat. Orochimaru controls the engagement through summons, taijutsu, elemental techniques, and a concealed shadow clone. Jiogan nearly traps him by turning his restrained body into water, but Orochimaru escapes with substitution and ends the encounter after declaring his interest 33 34.
Hiruzen subsequently reprimands him for personally participating and reducing the pass rate too far. Orochimaru defends his conduct, praises Jiogan’s abilities, and requests that the boy join the Anbu under his command; Hiruzen ultimately assigns Jiogan elsewhere 35 73.
Second Shinobi World War
Orochimaru assists Hiruzen in analyzing intelligence preceding the war. After fighting Hanzo alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade, he becomes known as one of the Sannin and replaces Danzō as Northern Front Commander 53 70 73.
Jiogan returns as his newly appointed deputy. Their private conversation establishes mutual respect and touches on Orochimaru’s Hokage ambitions. In their subsequent spar, Jiogan defeats Manda and overwhelms Orochimaru, reversing the power imbalance of their first encounter more than seven years earlier 73 75 76.
Orochimaru helps transmit Jiogan’s Flying Thunder God report to Hiruzen. Near the war’s end, he joins Jiraiya and Tsunade in another spar against Jiogan; at this point, the narration identifies him as the strongest of the three before Jiraiya’s later Sage Mode development 77 122.
Secret Research and New Techniques
Working with Danzō, Orochimaru researches Hashirama Cells and develops a reagent-assisted fusion method. His fixation on greater power leads him into human experimentation, initially without a single surviving subject 143 156 168.
A later group spar reveals the progress of his independent snake-style ninjutsu. He uses the Great Snake Substitute Technique to shed injuries and unleashes the Many Snakes Manifestation Array, while cooperating with Tsunade to protect Jiraiya’s Sage Mode preparation 151 152.
After Jiogan disappears in his battle with Madara, Orochimaru reports the aftermath to Hiruzen. Jiogan’s funeral also becomes a turning point in his reflections on the meaning of life 171 214.
Discovering Jiogan’s Survival
Orochimaru eventually completes Danzō’s cultivated arm and receives Impure World Reincarnation in return. When his attempt to summon Jiogan fails, he realizes that Jiogan survived and visits the family under the pretext of checking on Little Yunzhi 211 212.
Jiogan confronts him privately. Their discussion covers Jiogan’s decision to remain hidden, Danzō’s concealed Sharingan, and its possible role in suppressing Hashirama Cell erosion. Orochimaru agrees to keep Jiogan’s survival secret 212 213.
Jiogan then challenges his exclusive focus on the body, arguing that even Hashirama could not escape death. The distinction between a decaying body and an enduring spirit gives Orochimaru a new research direction, though no completed immortality technique is documented here 214.
Kakashi’s Treatment and Departure
Orochimaru attends the Five Kage Summit as part of Konoha’s delegation and later deploys to the Third Shinobi World War’s frontlines 218 221.
Jiogan approaches him with a plan to remove Danzō, support Minato’s succession, and allow Orochimaru to leave Konoha while receiving secret research funding. Orochimaru accepts the arrangement and agrees that Kakashi’s participation in transplantation must be voluntary 226 227.
Kakashi’s successful treatment provides evidence that an advanced Sharingan can tolerate substantial Hashirama Cell transplantation. Orochimaru then considers obtaining Danzō’s eye for further research 227.
By Minato’s inauguration, Orochimaru has left the village. Jiraiya encounters and fights him in the northern Land of Fire but continues pursuing him afterward. Jiogan and Minato conceal the true arrangement and his hidden location 232.

Trivia
- His home is sparsely decorated because he lives alone and spends most of his time working in the laboratory, often overnight 214.
- Tsunade describes both him and Jiraiya as poor cooks during their shared missions; they relied on Military Rations Pills and occasional wild game 143.
- His departure is presented publicly as defection, but Jiogan and Minato have already negotiated the circumstances with him 227 232.
