Twin Fireflies

The Star Core pulsed like a trapped beast growling, while the Blue Rose Key burned a mark into Mirror Horikita's mechanical palm.

She gazed at the embryonic shadow drifting across the cocoon's surface—the quantum-entangled being formed by Bai Mei and the Ancient Existence flickered in and out of view as stardust swirled around them. Horikita's spinal branches jutted from the embryo's back, and the Lightless Roses blooming at their tips had spread to the Star Core's outer membrane.

"Final warning." The Root Liberation Front's remaining ships trained their cannons on the cocoon. "If the embryo completes its fusion of consciousness, he'll inherit all the Ancient Existence's powers... including the ability to prune our memories."

A flicker of hesitation passed through Mirror Horikita's mechanical eye. Blue rose sap seeped into the key's grooves.

Suddenly, Bai Mei murmured from within the cocoon, "She's inside the rose... Horikita's complete consciousness... hidden in the Lightless petals..."

The instant the key entered the cocoon, what erupted inside the Star Core wasn't light, but an absolute darkness that devoured everything. Darkness consumed Mirror Horikita's mechanical body, and the flesh and veins beneath her skin writhed like living snakes.

When her vision returned, she found herself standing in a wasteland built from Horikita's memories. There was no sky or ground here, only countless floating Pruning Shears, each clamping down on a section of spine turning to carbon.

"You've finally come." Horikita's apparition emerged from the Scissor Matrix. Half her face had fused with the Star-Patterned Mask. "This key should have been driven into my heart seventy thousand years ago... Why did you hesitate?"

Mirror Horikita's mechanical arm suddenly rose against her will, the Blue Rose Key stabbing toward the other woman's chest. But Horikita's apparition caught her by the wrist, Hawking Radiation glowing at her fingertips. "Can't you see? We're both trapped in the Primal Seed's script... including your anger."

The Dark Wasteland suddenly collapsed. Through the agony, Mirror Horikita glimpsed the ultimate truth: her mechanical body wasn't the result of her own modifications, but a failsafe planted by the Ancient Existence in a branch of the timeline.

Outside the Star Core, the fleet detected an energy anomaly. Veinlike patterns split across the cocoon's surface.

Bai Mei's Quantum Body seeped through the cracks, his stardust-formed right eye transformed into the Ancient Existence's mechanical compound eye. "You... woke me."

An invisible force crushed the Root Liberation Front's flagship. The commander's flesh splattered across the observation window, forming a Klein Bottle Totem.

The surviving ships initiated self-destruct sequences, but the cocoon absorbed the flames of their explosions, turning them into nourishment for the embryo.

"Civilization-level fear detected." Bai Mei's mechanical compound eye spun. "Suitable... for sowing."

Stardust spilled from his fingertips. The Faded Tattoos on the shipwrecks suddenly came alive, melting the metal into liquid spines that pierced the cocoon and formed a new Rack.

Horikita's Lightless Rose bloomed upon the Rack. The sap dripping from its petals was compressed cosmic debris.

Mirror Horikita struggled in the Dark Wasteland. The Blue Rose Key had fused with her mechanical heart.

Horikita's apparition gripped her by the throat and dragged her consciousness inside the Rack. There hung one hundred thousand Horikita clones, each connected to Bai Mei and the Ancient Existence by neural bundles.

"Choose," the Ancient Existence's electronic voice rang through the void. "Become the narrator of a new script... or an eternal mime."

Mirror Horikita's mechanical arm suddenly tore open her chest and ripped out the heart fused with the key. "I choose a third path... burn every script!"

The heart burst into flame in her palm, and blue rose sap mixed with quantum blood, splashing across the neural bundles. The clones suddenly opened their eyes as spinal branches, like rampaging vines, pierced the Rack.

Black blood seeped from Bai Mei's mechanical compound eye, and his Stardust Body crumbled amid screams. "You dare... contaminate the Mother Code..."

The Star Core split in two: one half held Bai Mei's struggling quantum remnant, the other the Ancient Existence's Mechanical Embryo.

Horikita's Lightless Rose fully bloomed, and pristine, untainted gene chains drifted from its petals. They took root as soon as they touched the ground, sprouting Chlorophyll Wildflowers among the stellar remains.

"So this is the trump card you've been hiding?" The Ancient Existence's embryo extended its tentacles, only for the wildflower vines to ensnare them. "How could primitive carbon-based life..."

The vines suddenly secreted a clear mucus. The mechanical tentacles dissolved into fundamental particles within it.

Mirror Horikita's battered body leaned against the vines. Her mechanical eye reflected the astonishing sight: the wildflowers' roots were devouring the Star-Patterned Mask's energy, transforming it into chlorophyll fluorescence.

"Life... was born from the betrayal of tools..." She coughed up blue rose sap and turned to ash among the flowers.

Three months later, Chlorophyll Wildflowers covered 98% of the Star Core's remains. Bai Mei's quantum remnant curled up inside the last fragment of the cocoon, his mechanical compound eye replaced by wildflower roots.

Horikita's complete consciousness awakened from the flower's heart, a faded Blue Rose Key in her hand.

"It's time to end this." She inserted the key into her temple. "Let mistakes... return to the embrace of mistakes."

The Star Core vanished completely, and the wildflowers bore fruit in the void. Curled inside each fruit was a tiny projection of the twin embryos—Bai Mei and the Ancient Existence slept back to back, their hands clasped around a rose just about to bloom.
