Background / History

School Life and Her Brother

Horikita enters Class 1-D after coming to the school because her older brother, Horikita Manabu, attends it. She has few friends from junior high and initially suspects Ayanokoji of stalking her when he recognizes her on the bus. His claim to admire Manabu eases her suspicion, but she asks him to keep their sibling relationship private 1.

She believes Manabu’s disappointment stems from the growing gap between their abilities. Ayanokoji instead suggests that her habit of copying her brother—including his tastes, clothing, and preferred hair length—has caused her to lose her own direction. She takes the advice seriously and decides to seek confirmation from Manabu 2.

Horikita remains disciplined during the class’s first month. When personal-point payments stop, she still has more than 90,000 of her original 100,000 points. She also notices that Ayanokoji deliberately slows his examination work and answers questions incorrectly, confronting him about withholding abilities that could help Class D 4 5.

During the Resource Scramble exam, she questions the conspicuous gaps in Class C’s defenses and Ayanokoji’s apparent foreknowledge. After his manipulation exposes Sato Maya, Horikita sends him a questioning message, which he deletes 6.

White Room and the Rewritten World

Evidence links Horikita to the school’s experiments before its true nature is exposed. A charred photograph shows her as a child standing before a White Room observation window, with clones in incubation tanks behind her. White Room 2.0 footage later shows her undergoing repeated combat training inside a culture pod 9 10.

Ayanokoji discovers that the station’s neural connections terminate at Horikita, identifying her as its main server. After he rewrites the world through the Seed of Paradox, she voluntarily becomes its new core 11 12.

When Lin Yuan’s overuse of the Seed of Paradox destabilizes his existence, Horikita opens her cocoon and initiates the Final Protocol using his data. Their farewell is presented as a father-daughter exchange, and she resists system formatting as the Beta Worldline collapses 13.

Hypnos and the Ark Conflict

Horikita again becomes suspicious of Kiyotaka after Karuizawa Kei’s rooftop incident, questioning him because he was the last person Kei contacted. Her stolen library pass is found in the lock used to trap him, but the passage does not establish that Horikita arranged the trap 14.

After discovering a secret in the faculty office, she takes an active role against Tsukishiro’s system. She leads a group in destroying the power station during the Hypnos confrontation and later delivers a file identifying Kiyotaka as Experiment No. 42 15 16.

Her own infection becomes evident when fluorescent blue liquid leaks from her fingernails. Despite this, she helps prepare the ground resistance against the Ark and temporarily suppresses the mechanical growth beneath her skin with an injection 17 18.

At the submarine base, Horikita helps defeat a Tsukishiro-controlled Kiyotaka clone by exploiting its excessive imitation of Kiyotaka’s suspicious thinking. She accompanies Kiyotaka and Kei toward the Time Anchor on the moon’s far side. After the causal reset, she awakens with the other students without memories of the preceding events 19 20.

Bai Mei and the Nirvana Protocol

Horikita and Hirata discover a newly emerged Kiyotaka clone in Hokkaido. She responds to his unusual existence with empathy rather than treating him solely as a machine or experiment 21.

Her protective attachment expands to the rainbow clones. During their attack on the observation tower, she triggers an alarm that causes them to weep in resonance, helping defeat Tsukishiro’s projection and precipitating their evolution 22.

When a Mirror Horikita arrives with a fleet threatening to harvest the Star Ring’s “possibilities,” Horikita refuses to surrender Bai Mei. To save him from genetic collapse, she initiates the Nirvana Protocol, sacrificing her memories to serve as the cradle for his reconstructed consciousness. Bai Mei becomes the Child of the Stars and promises to return to Earth for one day every ten years 23.

The Void Tide and Blue Rose Tree

Bai Mei returns at the appointed time with injuries caused by his interventions in other universes. Horikita, Bai Mei, and Hirata investigate Tsukishiro’s original laboratory, discovering that Bai Mei functions as the lock imprisoning γ-000. Rather than kill the captive, Horikita drives the Stardust Dagger into her own heart, using her memory data to release him and halt the Void Tide 24.

Bai Mei later learns that the apparent entropy backlash concealed Tsukishiro’s plan for rebirth. He follows Horikita’s guidance north, confronts Tsukishiro, and activates a self-annihilation program to free her imprisoned spirit. Their spirits unite inside the Blue Rose Tree, whose protocol names them the executors of the Seed of Humanity 25.

Tsukishiro survives as data encoded throughout Rose energy and manipulates the Seventh Universe’s Mirror Horikita. During the ensuing conflict, Horikita guides Bai Mei toward the black seed containing the resentment of sacrificed universes and warns that killing Tsukishiro would mean inheriting his throne of order 26.

Identity Revelations and the Gardeners

The Crown of Thorns confrontation reveals that the kidnapped original Horikita is the mirror counterpart, while the main-universe Horikita is a clone created by Kiyotaka. Bai Mei’s origin is also described as a fusion of the two mothers’ shattered souls 26.

Later revelations complicate their history further: Horikita recalls an earlier life as Tsukishiro’s obedient clone and another in which she hid a self-destruct program within the Blue Rose Tree. An archived scene also shows her sealing an embryo containing Tsukishiro’s and Kiyotaka’s codes into the tree’s roots as a weapon against higher civilizations 29 30.

When the Gardeners arrive to harvest the universes, Horikita activates the Cannon of Possibilities using Hirata’s swarm core. She and Bai Mei initiate another Final Protocol and resist the final Gardener, an elderly Kiyotaka. Following Bai Mei’s self-annihilation, she awakens in a newborn universe populated by wildflowers rather than Star Rings or Mechanical Roses 28.

She subsequently descends into the planet’s core, rejects the mechanical skulls’ offer to become a new Gardener, and confronts Gardener clones bearing her own face. To save Bai Mei, she becomes part of his poem rather than accept the role of pruning life 29.

The Primal Seed and Lightless Rose

Horikita allows herself to be captured to locate the Primal Seed inside the Primal Bonsai. She gives it to Bai Mei, who triggers the bonsai’s destruction and escapes with her physical form 32.

Her recovered body is revealed to have become a living vessel for the seed. She delays its awakening through pain while her spinal branches intertwine with the Star-Patterned Mask’s neural network. As her humanity deteriorates, her phantom asks Bai Mei to kill her while she can still remember 33.

Her complete consciousness remains hidden within the Lightless Rose. Mirror Horikita’s intervention releases the process through which Chlorophyll Wildflowers consume the mask’s energy. The Star Core is annihilated, and Horikita’s complete consciousness awakens 34.

Appearance

Horikita initially has long hair, which she grew during middle school after Manabu said he liked it. Her later appearance changes extensively through server integration, mechanical infection, and plant-based transformations 2 12 23.

  • Neck marking — A barcode at the back of her neck serves as the convergence point for the station’s data lines; it later becomes golden patterns 11 13.
  • Mechanical features — A bionic eye, mechanical body patterns, and an infected arm appear during later conflicts 19 22.
  • White rose — Embedded in her heart after the Nirvana Protocol, connecting her bio-chip with plant nerves 23 24.
  • Fluorescent markings — Cover her rematerialized body after the Blue Rose Tree’s destruction 28.
  • Carbonized spinal branches — Grow from her body as the Primal Seed’s vessel and eventually bear Lightless Roses 33 34.

Personality

Horikita begins as reserved, proud, and protective of her privacy. She avoids approaching Manabu because she fears damaging his reputation and studies independently rather than seeking conversation. Nevertheless, she responds sincerely when Ayanokoji offers an explanation for their strained relationship 1 2.

She is observant and willing to challenge people whose behavior seems inconsistent. Her concern for Class D leads her to confront Ayanokoji about his concealed ability, while his manipulations and Kei’s disappearance repeatedly provoke her suspicion 5 6 14.

Her later decisions increasingly center on protecting vulnerable lives. She accepts the clones’ individuality, becomes a mother figure to Bai Mei, and sacrifices memories, bodily safety, and freedom to preserve his future. Even after revelations about programmed maternal attachment and her own origins, she continues opposing imposed order and the pruning of life 21 23 24 25 29.
