Not many cards in hand?
This was probably related to how that big shot had been unwilling to see Superman die before, so he had coaxed and deceived Ian into solving the problem, allowing Superman to avoid his fate of death?
Just as Ian thought of this.
Color surged back into the surroundings like a tide, sound flooded his ears again, and Kara "came back to life"—she finally let out the breath that had been paused for so long.
"So~"
As though she had sensed nothing at all, Kara's thoughts picked up from the moment before the pause. While pondering, she cast a somewhat bothered glance at the dinner Ian had completely swept clean.
"So you awakened your powers, and then your father told you his secret?" Kara did not remember ever having a headache, nor had she noticed that the entire world had been paused.
All she had was curiosity about why Ian had come looking for her.
"Uh... it's a long story." Ian snapped out of his deductions about the Riddler's behavior and scratched his head, trying to organize his words.
"Then let's go upstairs and talk. I have more food at home." Seeing that Ian still looked hungry, Kara felt that, as an elder, she ought to show some concern.
Hiss.
He had suddenly become someone else's junior. What a strange feeling.
"Okay, Aunt Kara. Wait a moment." After saying that, Ian walked back into the stairwell and carried out a plastic bag filled with quite a few smashed hard drives.
"What is this? Trash you picked up outside?"
Kara was utterly confused.
"Merely the hardships of a few hours ago." Ian was clearly still uneasy about the broken hard drives. In a pleading tone, he asked Kara,
"Could you breathe some fire on this?"
The moment those words came out.
Kara was hard-stunned again.
"Breathe fire?"
At first, Kara thought that after leaving school, she had developed a generation gap with young people nowadays. But after recalling the proof Ian had shown her earlier, she felt that perhaps the problem was not with her.
"I can't breathe fire."
Kara sighed helplessly.
"But I have a stove at home. You can borrow it." She offered the solution any normal person would think of when someone needed fire.
As she spoke.
Kara took the lead toward the elevator.
"Then you need to train, Aunt Kara. Breathing fire is way cooler than spraying water." Ian followed closely behind. His successive remarks were starting to make Supergirl lose confidence in herself.
"No, I can't spray water either... Can Clark breathe fire and spray water now? How did he do that?" Kara turned around uncertainly to look at the boy behind her.
How else could she be called the scatterbrained Supergirl?
Ian had successfully led her astray.
"Keep training? Train every day—fifty million push-ups, fifty million sit-ups, fifty million weighted squats. I believe you can definitely become one of the Calabash Brothers... I mean, breathe fire and spray water." Ian might enjoy telling little lies sometimes, but he believed this was definitely a well-intentioned lie for family.
One had to believe in a Kryptonian's "mind-over-matter" abilities! Although Kara did not have Krypton's Codex in her body, it was not as though Ian needed her to become invincible through sheer willpower.
Ian truly believed that one day, he would see Aunt Kara breathe fire and spray water!
Even just one of them would do!
"Keep training? Would that actually work?" Kara naturally remained doubtful, but seeing Ian's utterly serious expression, she could not help but think about it seriously.
"Ding~"
Kara pressed the elevator button and stepped inside. Ian jogged in after her. Before Kara could press a floor, he beat her to it and pressed the button for her floor.
"I just moved here! Is your father spying on me?" Kara looked completely bewildered. She raised both hands, staring at Ian with absolute shock.
"Is it possible that the apartment manager can look up your move-in information?" Ian remained extremely calm, spreading his hands with a faintly puzzled expression.
He felt that this aunt of his was overreacting.
"Uh..."
Kara looked a little embarrassed. "I remember the management in this building is very strict. The manager normally would not disclose residents' information to someone making inquiries."
"Of course, unless you bribed her." Kara glanced in confusion at Ian's empty pockets. He did not look like he had any money left to bribe someone.
"No bribe was necessary. The manager was just a young woman." Ian's response left Kara slightly confused. She frowned, as though considering what that had to do with Ian getting her information.
"Most girls are kind, so as long as you smile at them, they become willing to help—Aunt Kara, didn't your father ever teach you to guard against that?"
"My father taught me how to use this trick." Ian was smiling now. Unlike his previous fake smile, this was a smile of deep agreement with the life experience passed down by his old man.
"??????"
Kara's face was immediately full of question marks.
She really wanted to know just how bizarre Clark's parenting methods were.
"The travel money for coming to National City to find me... you didn't get it from some innocent girl like that, did you?" Kara thought of Ian's empty pockets and the distance between this place and Metropolis.
Ian's remarks had been so outrageous that she could not help developing deep suspicions.
"Of course not! How could I do something like that?" Ian frowned as though he had been insulted. He had never thought he would live off someone else on such tiny little bites of soft rice.
"That's good."
Kara breathed a sigh of relief.
At least no innocent girl had been sweet-talked by some scumbag.
"So, did you fly here yourself?" Kara seemed unaware of Ian's status as an "adopted son." She began wondering how far his powers had awakened.
"I came by car."
Ian shook his head. Not being able to fly was also a regret for him. Of course, once he unlocked the profession Homelander had brought with him, perhaps that regret could be directly remedied.
"By car? Did you hitchhike at the roadside?"
Kara began guessing. For a child, that was an extremely dangerous thing to do. But for a child who could take bullets to the forehead, she felt there was no need to worry.
"That was my plan at first, but then I ran into a robber holding up people on the road." Ian had barely finished speaking when he heard the elevator stop.
"Ding~"
The elevator doors opened.
Kara led Ian toward the door of her apartment.
"Looks like you played hero for once."
Supergirl had finally found a trace of family spirit in Ian.
"A hero? Perhaps."
Ian's vague response made Kara slightly curious.
"You defeated the robber, saved innocent people, and then the people you rescued brought you to National City, right?" Kara was still worried that Ian might have beaten the robber to death.
However.
The facts proved that her worries were unnecessary.
"No."
Ian shook his head.
He had always adhered to the principle that an ordinary NPC should not interfere in Metropolis's everyday incidents.
Therefore.
"I just took the car the robber had parked by the roadside while he was robbing people." Ian's honest answer carried a hint of nostalgia for the driving experience.
"?????"
Kara, who had just taken out her keys to open the door, was instantly stunned.
This was absolutely not a development Kara had ever imagined.
She considered herself well-traveled and knowledgeable.
But now.
Kara felt that she was still too young.
"Where's the car?"
After swallowing, Kara could not help asking.
"I sold it to a tattooed Black guy by the roadside."
Ian answered.
"The money? Even if you sold it to a gang member, you should have gotten a few hundred dollars, right?" Kara had recently been considering buying a used car, so she had some idea of how much a car could sell for. Her eyes widened.
Of course.
Ian's eyes widened even more than hers.
"No, Aunt Kara, what kind of person do you think I am? A thief? Of course I mailed the money from selling the car to that robber! His identification and home address were in the car!"
"I'm a law-abiding citizen!"
Ian truly could not believe Aunt Kara saw him that way. He could somewhat understand those blond punks misunderstood during their rebellious phase now. Dyeing one's hair blond did not necessarily mean one was a delinquent; maybe one just thought it looked cool. Just like how taking the robber's car did not necessarily mean he was committing robbery!
What perfect logic!
"..."
Kara fell into a long silence.
A moment later.
"Ian, my nephew whom I only got to meet today..." Kara took several deep breaths in succession, doing her best to put on a smile that looked like an elder's.
Then.
"Would you like to learn about Arkham Asylum?"
She offered Ian her heartfelt suggestion in a gentle tone.
