Background / History
Bruce Wayne operates publicly as Gotham’s wealthy Wayne Enterprises owner while using the Batman identity to wage war on crime. His parents were murdered in Crime Alley, an event that became the central motive behind Batman’s war on Gotham’s criminal underworld. His resources, combat training, detective work, surveillance network, hidden facilities, and nocturnal activity make his civilian and vigilante identities closely connected to outside investigators. 240
Bruce first approaches Ian Kent as Bruce Wayne after a Wayne Enterprises publisher receives Ian’s manuscript, The Tragic and Beautiful Love of Batman. He is interested in Ian’s talent and business ideas, but reacts with shock to the manuscript’s portrayal of Batman. 53 54
Appearance
As Bruce Wayne, he is a powerful middle-aged man with the composed bearing and tailored clothing associated with old-money wealth. As Batman, he wears a dark armored batsuit, cape, cowl, white lenses, and voice modulation. 53 121
- Publicly presents himself as a wealthy playboy and industrialist. 240
- Uses a low, gravelly Batman voice. 72 135
- Wears increasingly specialized armored suits for superhuman threats. 115 121
- Was briefly bound to the Golden Throne and forced to operate from a throne-mounted wheelchair. 154 169
Personality
Batman is intensely vigilant, strategic, and unwilling to accept incomplete information. He maintains extensive contingency plans against allies and enemies alike, particularly Kryptonians and speedsters. He is capable of remaining calm under pressure, but his obsession with preparation can drive him toward dangerous experimentation. 121 123 225 294
Despite his suspicion of Ian, Batman gradually develops a reluctant trust in him. This trust is rooted partly in Thomas and Martha Wayne’s belief that Ian is fundamentally decent, even if dealing with Ian repeatedly tests Batman’s patience. 197
His sense of responsibility toward Gotham persists even when he is physically impaired or corrupted. After becoming attached to the Golden Throne, he immediately begins researching both the throne and his altered body, then resumes pursuing Joker from his wheelchair. 154

Batman is among the world’s leading detectives and uses observation, surveillance, biological analysis, and deduction to investigate threats.
- Identifies and collects Savitar’s biological data. 115
- Deduces that Ian’s “God-Bane Joker” identity is connected to Ian Kent through their bloodline resonance. 308

- Possesses numerous varieties of Kryptonite, including blue Kryptonite spears. 123
- Uses Darkseid’s attack as cover to escape to a secret enemy arsenal, then destroys it rather than confronting Darkseid directly. 225
- Designed more than three hundred simulated strategies against tyrannical Superman, though all failed. 457
Combat and Practical Engineering
Batman is a trained fighter with exceptional field-engineering skill, able to modify weapons during combat.

Altered Physiology and Psychic Power
Bruce gains dangerous supernatural alterations after his exposure to the Shattered Universe and later experiments with Ian’s blood.

- Becomes fused to the Golden Throne, which also modifies his body into a Psyker. 154
- Releases psychic energy capable of disrupting Batcave electronics and levitating the Batmobile. 154
- Experiments with Ian’s blood to create an antidote for the Pollution Force; animal tests produce aggression, disintegration, and corrosive-energy effects. 294
- Injects himself with unprocessed blood, leading to further mutation and vulnerability to Joker contamination. 294 305 307
- Is later cleansed of much of Ian’s bloodline contamination through Ian’s blood transfusion and genetic correction. 309 316

Story Role / Major Arcs
Ian Kent’s Batman Impersonation
When Ian impersonates Batman in Metropolis to gain public attention, Bruce immediately responds by sending the Batmobile and confronting him by phone. Rather than simply punishing Ian, Batman warns him of danger and helps him escape Clark’s approach. 71 72
Batman continues monitoring Ian, including placing a camera outside Ian’s window. He later raids Ian’s room seeking his “craziest” manuscript and investigates Ian’s technology, including a Laser Gun and Micro Reactor. 88 90
Investigation of Ian’s Origins
Bruce becomes increasingly suspicious of Ian’s origins and confronts Clark in the Batcave. He attempts to use the Speed Force to witness the day Ian was found, but supernatural interference destroys his first sample and leaves a warning in holy flame. 97
Batman refuses to abandon the investigation, opening a backup Speed Force reserve. Amenadiel subsequently warns him that Heaven cannot contain Gotham’s king, forcing Bruce to halt his inquiry and withdraw surveillance on the Kent family. 98
Doomsday and Sargeras
Batman arrives during Ian’s battle with Doomsday carrying blue Kryptonite spears. Although Ian warns that a monster is inside Doomsday, Batman fires a Kryptonite cannon and kills it, releasing Sargeras, the Dark Titan. 123
The decision creates a major crisis for the Justice League, demonstrating both Batman’s readiness to act and the consequences of acting without fully trusting Ian’s information. 123
Heaven Crisis and the Golden Throne
When the Gates of Heaven open and corrupted angels fall to Earth, Batman decides to enter Heaven. He works alongside Superman and Ian to stop the catastrophe, then throws Ian into Heaven to seek a solution when the gates cannot be opened from outside. 139 140
Later, in a shattered Warhammer universe, Batman is found contaminated by the four Chaos Gods and held down by Superman and the Emperor. The Emperor’s throne leaves Bruce physically fused to it and awakens his Psyker powers. 154
Hellbat Operation Against Darkseid
Batman uses the Hellbat Armor and Ian’s paid enhancement system when targeted by Darkseid’s Omega Sanction. Rather than fight directly, he teleports to a hidden Darkseid arsenal, destroys its Parademons with angelic power, and sends a clone to sacrifice itself in the destruction of the facility. 225
Temporal Disruption
While investigating the future, Batman damages his eyes through information overload. Ian appears in the Batcave through the Speed Force, offers replacement eyes, and later binds Batman while rushing to stop Martha Kent’s kidnapping. 262 263
Batman initially identifies Ian as a dangerous future speedster or god called Havoc, but chooses observation over immediate activation of extreme countermeasures because the intruder seems to know him and the Batcave. 264
Bloodline Contamination and the God-Bane Joker
Desperate to cure the Pollution Force, Bruce experiments with Ian’s blood and injects himself after his animal tests fail catastrophically. The bloodline contamination, combined with Joker’s poison after Batman kills Joker, nearly transforms him into The Batman Who Laughs. 294 305 307
Ian intervenes by aggregating around Joker’s vacant cosmic role as the God-Bane Joker. He defeats the weakened Batman, takes him to the Batcave, performs a blood replacement and genetic correction, and removes most of the contamination. 308 309 316
Batman reluctantly accepts that Ian must temporarily occupy the Joker’s role to preserve the timeline and agrees to help return Damian, Jonathan, and Jordan to their proper time. 317
Tyrannical Superman Timeline
In an altered future, Batman reveals that Superman became a global tyrant after repeatedly witnessing Lois’s death across failed timelines. Batman explains that Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern, and their allies were killed resisting Superman. 457
Having failed more than three hundred plans against this Superman, Batman urges Ian to confront him instead. He recognizes that Ian possesses the power Batman lacks, while continuing to serve as Ian’s source of intelligence and tactical direction. 457
Notable Quotes

“You really are arrogant enough.” 115
“Even intelligence has its limits.” 457
