Background / History
Altina was born into Elune’s royal line and contracted Demonization Sickness during an outbreak in the Elven Royal Court when she was three years old. Although she survived through the protection of nature’s aura, black rot marks spread across her body over time. 405
Her childhood was shattered when Varian murdered her father, Elron, seized the throne through a coup, imprisoned her mother and siblings, and declared their supporters demon conspirators. Because Altina had been outside the royal court at the time, she escaped the purge and became a wanted fugitive across Elune. 403
While fleeing toward the Eternal Tree, she encountered Ansu in spirit form, calling him “Mr. Ghost.” He saved her from pursuing soldiers and assassins, fed and sheltered her, and gradually earned her trust. 402 404 405 During their time together, Ansu created a crescent-shaped amulet intended to suppress her illness and secretly house a Beacon of Time for a plan spanning 2,500 years. 407 411
After the demon calamity struck Elune, Altina spent centuries searching for a cure for her people’s magical contamination. She sought help from human scholars and dangerous research groups, only to repeatedly encounter failure: master mage Albert Fane had become an abomination, while a later dark-magic experiment left her emotionally broken. 315 Despite believing the world might be beyond saving, she continued living for the day she could save her homeland. 230 315
In Novigel, Altina investigated Gray Rat, a supplier of Safe Magic Crystal No. 1 and Scarlet Marrowstone. Her pursuit intersected with Ansu’s investigation; after initially resisting his group, she agreed to exchange information and cooperate against the smuggling conspiracy. 228 229
Altina later searched for the scholars Hermit and Ash after reading their work on magical pollution. Discovering that Ansu was Hermit and Cecilia was Ash restored her hope that Elune’s demonization sickness could be solved. 314 317 After witnessing the Purity Guard Ring and the Magic Safety Standards Committee’s work, she swore loyalty to Ansu and Cecilia in exchange for their aid in saving Elune. 319
During the Southern Borderlands expedition, Altina scouted contaminated territory, assisted in the search for the Heart of Filth, and endured the revelation that the God of Nature was dead. Support from Ansu and Vera eventually helped her accept that she did not have to bear Elune’s burden alone. 333 336 350
Appearance
Altina usually presents herself as a hooded, dark-green-cloaked ranger, concealing her elven features while traveling in human territory. When she finally removes her hood, she is described as exceptionally beautiful. 228 337
- Long, brilliant golden hair, usually braided, with loose strands around her face. 337
- Clear emerald-green eyes. 228 337
- Distinctive pointed elven ears. 315 337
- Fair, luminous complexion. 337
- Dark green ranger’s cloak, longbow, and a slender sword at her waist. 228
- Often wears a delicate crescent-shaped mithril amulet around her neck. 315 344
Personality
Altina is reserved, vigilant, and deeply protective of Elune’s secrets. She strongly rejects being called a demi-human, regarding elves as a distinct people with their own history and dignity. 228 Her concealed appearance and guarded behavior initially make her seem aloof, but much of this caution comes from her status as an elven fugitive and the burden of protecting her homeland. 229 319
Centuries of failed research and exposure to magical contamination left her pessimistic and melancholy. She often expects hope to end in disappointment, yet she refuses to abandon her mission even when it costs her dignity, safety, or emotional well-being. 230 315 320
Beneath her composed exterior, Altina is compassionate and earnest. She does not want Elune’s disaster repeated in human lands, and she gradually accepts Ansu, Vera, and the Order as companions rather than merely useful allies. 336 350 She also has a more lively side that emerges around food, friendly teasing, and people she trusts. 336 337
