Background

Vera and Ansu grew up together in an orphanage, where the other children excluded them and they often went hungry. Ansu stole or fought for food to share with her before the pair were adopted by Dr. Morris, whom Vera remembers as a kind father despite his lack of experience raising children. 94

She later left school and took responsibility for household work so Ansu could attend the Royal Academy.
