Background

Before his defeat, Barton was the ruthless leader of the Sea-Kin Followers. Coveting Colin's warship and the relics he believed it could help him acquire, he ordered captives, dissidents, unwanted Sea-Kin, and beasts sacrificed to a damaged deep-sea idol to create a storm against the Survivors' vessel 184. He regarded the ship's strength as an incentive to conquer it, expecting its weapons and cargo to become his spoils 186.

Barton was ultimately overwhelmed after Colin took control of his mind and a group of Survivors struck him with coordinated mental attacks 188. After being beaten into submission, he professed repentance and was given Mushroom Enhancement Potion and Sun Mushrooms as “holy water” and “holy communion” 190. He thereafter became fiercely devoted to Colin, treating his orders as oracles and offering even his ancient-Remnant relatives as sources of historical information 191 192.

His past included the killing of Survivors for sacrifice: he admitted to unintentionally killing three Survivors seven days before his confession, and revealed that he had used Survivors' blood to seek power from an Evil Idol 193. He also killed other Fallen Remnants who knew of Colin's group, preventing their knowledge from spreading 193. Following his conversion, he gradually developed guilt over such acts as Colin's values reshaped his outlook 444.

Appearance

Barton is a hulking Sea-Kin whose size and physique make him resemble a small tower. Even before taking a combat stance, he stands over three meters tall 183 310.

Personality

Barton was initially greedy, domineering, and callous toward life. He sacrificed subordinates and captives for power, ordered lesser combatants forward to exhaust enemies, and felt no grief when learning that a distant Sea-Kin relative had been killed 184 186 264. His former pride and violent temperament earned him the reputation of a “Wrath-Bearer” 533.

After his conversion, that ruthlessness became focused loyalty. He is intensely reverent toward Colin, regards Colin as a being greater than the System, and willingly risks himself to recruit or protect others for his cause 191 308 311. His faith is fanatical enough that he interprets Colin's actions as divine salvation, but he also becomes more compassionate toward oppressed Sea-Kin and regrets his former worldview 444.

He is an effective manipulator and field commander. Barton reads desperation quickly, uses rapid rhetorical pressure to prevent opponents from thinking through objections, and adjusts plans when an operation becomes too dangerous 265 266 315.
