Damn it. The Speed Force in my mind is definitely linked to Barry's life.
Lin Li could be certain that night, when lightning struck both him and Barry, it connected them. If the Speed Force in his mind completely dissipated, Barry's life would likely be in danger.
The cells in Barry's ribs and those responsible for blood supply had been activated and split by the Speed Force, briefly stabilizing his bodily functions before fading away.
The flesh on Barry's chest and abdomen was still turned outward, bleeding. His body, which had just been stabilized by the Speed Force, began convulsing again.
Speed Mode dissipated.
Lin Li withdrew from the nearly frozen world.
The faint star-like Speed Force in his brain dimmed, on the verge of extinguishing.
He smiled, his heart filled with joy. Speed Mode had given him an extraordinary experience, and he now knew how to keep Barry alive.
Barry was safe—at least, he would remain stable in Lin Li's hands.
He placed his hand on Barry's chest, which was already a bloody mess. The flesh had been sliced by Pressure Blades and torn open by pressure bombs, looking horrifyingly brutal.
A faint silver arc of electricity appeared in Lin Li's hand as he activated some unknown frequency. Barry calmed under his touch, stopped convulsing, and settled down.
Cisco, whose heart had been in his throat, also relaxed and asked in astonishment, "Are you controlling Barry's bio-magnetic field to keep his physiological functions stable?"
Lin Li smiled and said, "I know all of Barry's molecular scan data. I understand his body's frequency. I'm activating the weak currents in his cells to form a bio-magnetic field and keep his physiological functions stable."
Cisco was dumbfounded. "You can do that? That's... that's insane."
"Alright, Cisco. If you want to praise me, save it for later. There's something I need you to do now. Go to the passenger seat and get the Energy Gun."
Lin Li's tone suddenly turned cold and commanding.
The Energy Gun was made by Cisco to charge Lin Li. Originally built as a charger, Lin Li found its charging and storage capabilities too monotonous, so he and Cisco modified it into a gun smaller than a pistol.
Cisco didn't notice the change in Lin Li's tone and hurried to the passenger seat to grab the Energy Gun.
He ran back quickly and said urgently, "What is it, Lin Li? Do you want me to shoot you with it to charge you up?"
There was a time when, after Lin Li drained his energy during training, Cisco would shoot him with the Energy Gun to recharge him. It went from millivolts to microvolts to kilovolts, with the gun modified several times, finally fixed at 3.5 kilovolts.
That was a lethal voltage. The human body can typically withstand voltages of 36 volts or less.
"Cisco, aim at that bastard and fire!"
Lin Li said coldly. If the Speed Force hadn't suddenly flared up earlier, he would have already killed Clyde Mardon. He wouldn't let any factor that could endanger Barry's life slip by. Killing him was the best choice. Locking him up like in the TV series was too risky. He wasn't going to take that chance.
If he weren't busy keeping Barry alive right now, Clyde Mardon would already be dead. Lin Li was no saint.
Clyde Mardon, seeing that Lin Li couldn't spare a hand to kill him, scrambled to his feet in panic and tried to run.
Cisco, hearing Lin Li's command, nervously raised the Energy Gun.
By then, Clyde Mardon had already gotten up.
Cisco raised the Energy Gun nervously and said, "Are you sure we should fire? That would kill someone. 3.5 kilovolts would burn a person to a crisp."
Lin Li shouted harshly, "Fire!"
Cisco's palms were sweating from tension. He hesitated and said, "Lin Li, this is murder! Murder!"
Clyde Mardon had already turned his back to Cisco and started running.
Lin Li roared, "Look at my injuries and Barry's condition! If we hadn't gotten here, Barry would be dead by now. This bastard—what are you hesitating for? He wanted to kill Barry..."
Cisco's inner struggle raged. Two voices tangled in his mind.
Fire. Kill him. Kill him. He's a bad guy. He wanted to kill Barry...
Barry's fine. No one died. Killing is wrong. If you kill him, how are you any different? Do you want to be a murderer? He should go to jail. The police will catch him...
His upbringing had never taught him how to handle a situation like this. Cisco wrestled with his own conscience until Clyde Mardon had already disappeared from sight.
In the end, Cisco couldn't pull the trigger. His innate kindness and the good values he'd been raised with couldn't break through the fear of killing someone.
"Sorry, Lin Li. I can't do it."
Cisco lowered the Energy Gun. He couldn't go against his conscience, and he didn't have the resolve to kill a man.
"Cisco, you're a kind person. But if you let him go today, he won't be grateful. He'll hurt and kill more people. Next time, he might come back for revenge. It could be me, Caitlin, Dr. Wells, or your family who dies. Can you bear the pain of losing a friend or a loved one?"
Lin Li said angrily. If Clyde Mardon didn't die today, he might retaliate later. Lin Li couldn't understand this kind of "let the tiger return to the mountain" behavior.
Cisco's lips moved, but he said nothing. He didn't know if he was right or wrong anymore. But if the enemy came back for revenge, as Lin Li said, he might lose friends or family—something he couldn't bear. For a moment, he felt lost.
Lin Li's face darkened. Cisco's behavior infuriated him. Only when your own friends and family are dead do you realize the consequences of letting a tiger return to the mountain? That was stupid. Idiotic.
The two fell silent.
People began trickling back onto the street. They had been evacuated by The Flash when the fog rolled in. Not knowing what caused the fog, The Flash moved them all out to avoid casualties. Barry's decision proved wise—until he was nearly beaten to death, not a single life was lost.
The crowd returned to Jordmay Street, gasping at the chaotic scene, which looked like a typhoon had swept through.
"What happened to the whole street? Did a typhoon hit?"
"Oh, no. It looks like a garbage war broke out."
"Alien attack? How are all the windows shattered?"
Before they could be surrounded by the crowd, Caitlin arrived just in time with the car.
They quickly loaded Barry into the vehicle and drove back to STAR Labs.
"Are you two crazy playing superhero? Do you have a death wish?"
Seeing Lin Li and Barry's injuries, Caitlin scolded them. Was this a suicide mission?
