Background / History
Hogg inherited leadership of the declining Baruch Clan, whose Dragonblood Warrior line had produced no new awakened warrior for more than a thousand years. His own bloodline test had failed to meet the required standard, leaving him unable to cultivate the Dragonblood Secret Manual in his youth. 17
After the Saint-level battle devastated Wushan Town, Hogg chose to have the Baruch Clan bear most reconstruction expenses rather than raise the residents’ taxes. This drove the clan into financial crisis; he borrowed from local nobles and prepared to sell three ancient Yulan imperial musical scores to Viscount Locke. 7 16 28
Hogg initially raised Linley with stern expectations and little emotional openness. He was concerned when Linley disappeared during the Wushan Town disaster, but quickly hid that concern behind work. He also dismissed Linley’s early warrior progress because he believed Linley’s substandard bloodline limited him to seventh-rank strength without Battle Qi. 7
His attitude shifted abruptly when Linley proved he was a mage by casting Earth Spike. Hogg suspended Linley’s ordinary studies so he could pursue magical instruction, then publicly took pride in having a mage for a son. 12 17
Linley’s Dragonblood Warrior transformation shattered Hogg’s long-held belief that their bloodline could not awaken. After recovering from the shock, Hogg recognized that the Baruch Clan could be revived. He nevertheless imposed the burden of recovering the clan’s lost ancestral weapon, Warblade Slaughter, on eight-year-old Linley. 17 18
Linley later presented him with ten eighth-rank magical beast cores and a vial of Azure Dragon blood. Hogg drank the blood, awakened as an orthodox cyan-scaled Dragonblood Warrior, and immediately attained peak rank-eight strength. 29 30
Personality
Hogg is proud, ambitious, and deeply attached to the Baruch Clan’s lost prestige. Even while desperate for funds, he refused to overtax Wushan Town and negotiated directly with Locke for the clan’s remaining heirlooms. Once his strength and prospects improved, he refused the Dawson Chamber of Commerce’s offer of thirty million gold coins per year, judging it too small a price for a future Saint-level Dragonblood Warrior. 16 32
As a father, Hogg is initially emotionally distant and harsh. He mistakes Linley’s request for leave as laziness, doubles his lessons when he cannot explain himself, and later uses the return of Warblade Slaughter as an ultimatum. 12 18 Yet his actions repeatedly show genuine concern: he is relieved by Linley’s safe returns, worries over the danger of Linley pursuing revenge, and gradually treats him with greater pride, respect, and affection. 7 28 36 44
Hogg’s defining obsession is avenging his wife, Lina. This once made him reckless, but Linley’s growth and his own awakening give him reason to wait and cultivate instead of seeking immediate death. 29 44 He remains ruthless toward those responsible for Lina’s fate, personally interrogating and killing Patterson and torturing Clayde for answers. 51 60
