Background / History
Shrek was regarded as the premier academy of the continent and had swept nearly every major academy tournament championship for the preceding thousand years. Its students and supporters treated its reputation as an inherited cause, repeatedly invoking the slogan “For the glory of Shrek!” 16 44
Its admissions system favored applicants with recommendation letters; Huo Yuhao and Chi Qiu were initially refused despite Chi Qiu displaying a Golden Dragon martial soul and a yellow-purple soul-ring configuration because they lacked one. The academy also offered no financial aid to poor students, reasoning that applicants recommended by city lords should not require it. 3 6
The Outer Court operated through continual elimination. Students who failed individual or class assessments could be expelled, and teachers imposed severe pressure to preserve Shrek’s reputation; Wang Yan later described all but the most exceptional students as being treated as “trash.” 70
Huo Yuhao’s freshman team won the Freshman Competition, but teachers debated whether a one-ring champion could qualify as a core disciple. The subsequent presentation of a Secret Technique Soul Bone taken from the Star Dou Great Forest contributed to Huo Yuhao and Chi Qiu’s decision to leave the academy. 13
Organization and Education
Sea God Pavilion
The Sea God Pavilion serves as Shrek’s highest leadership body. Mu En, the Dragon God Douluo, was its master until his death. Before dying, he assigned reforms and promotions, including elevating Zhang Lexuan to vice dean of the Spirit Department and a Sea God Pavilion member. 99
- Mu En ordered fifty percent of Shrek City’s revenue allocated to the Soul Tool Department. 99
- He directed Shrek to accelerate soul-tool development, calling it “the path of the era.” 99
- A future Level 10 Soul Master was designated to inherit the position of Sea God Pavilion Master. 99
Outer and Inner Courts
Shrek maintains an Outer Court and Inner Court. The academy’s status and resources heavily favor the Inner Court; during the Shrek Inspection Team disaster, Wang Yan reflected that the Outer Court possessed neither influence nor a share in Shrek’s glory. 36
- Inner Court students undergo harsh physical training intended to cultivate endurance and perseverance. 107
- The Inner Court fielded Shrek’s tournament main team, while reserve members included students such as Bei Bei, Xu Sanshi, He Caitou, Dai Huabin, Zhu Lu, Jiang Nannan, and Xie Huanyue. 35
- Shrek’s Seven Devils is the title used for each generation’s elite student team. 209
Soul Tool Department
Shrek established a Soul Tool Department, but its technology lagged far behind the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy and Mingde Hall. During the exchange program, Shrek students found that they could neither follow Xiao Hongchen’s work nor understand Huo Yuhao’s advanced soul-tool discussions. 99 106
After Mu En’s death, Shrek agreed to relocate the academy exchange point farther from Shrek City, a concession interpreted by Jing Hongchen as evidence of its weakened position. 105
Major Events
Shrek Inspection Team Disaster
Shrek’s Inspection Team suffered catastrophic casualties in the Mingdou Mountain Range. Three Inner Court disciples were killed, further students were injured or killed by the Messenger of Death, and Xi Xi was captured and carried into Sun Moon Empire territory. Elder Xuan arrived too late to protect the team or recover Xi Xi. 36
All-Continent Tournament Defeat
Shrek entered the tournament with much of its main team injured. Ling Luochen led an improvised lineup while Ma Xiaotao and Dai Yueheng recovered, and several reserve members were also wounded. 42
Despite remaining undefeated through the round-robin stage, Shrek drew the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy in the quarterfinals. 50
- Sun Moon defeated Shrek’s team battle with the Golden Dragon Green Spirit Sword, forcing captain Dai Yueheng to concede. 56
- Shrek ultimately fell in the round of eight, ending its tournament run. 60
- The loss undermined Shrek’s claim to be the continent’s number one academy; the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy was subsequently described as the “modern number one academy.” 182
Exchange Program
Shrek later exchanged students with the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy. Its delegation was led by Fan Yu and included Bei Bei, He Caitou, and Ye Xiaosheng. 105
The exchange exposed the vast technological gap between Shrek’s Soul Tool Department and Mingde Hall. Although Shrek students arrived intending to learn and record soul-tool knowledge, they found much of the instruction beyond their understanding. 106
Wang Yan’s Defection
Wang Yan became increasingly disillusioned with Shrek, describing its glory as a superficial gold layer that concealed deeper problems. Meng Hongchen invited him to join the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy’s new Spirit Department. 160
He eventually left Shrek and disclosed that the academy had cheated in tournaments, attributing its worsening condition to the period after Mu En’s death. 181
Tournament Disqualification
In a later tournament match against Spirit Contract Gate, Shrek’s team faced Huo Yuhao, Chi Qiu, Yin Shuang, Wang Dong, and Nana. Spirit Contract Gate defeated Shrek’s team battle despite fielding only five competitors. 209 210
A teacher was then discovered using a prohibited Soul Tool capable of opening a small hole in the arena’s Soul Tool Shield to transfer soul power. The referee panel revoked Shrek’s tournament qualification for cheating. 210
Decline and Current Condition
By the time Huo Yuhao and Chi Qiu returned to Shrek City, the academy and city were operating under heightened tension. High-altitude detection soul tools had been deployed for alarms, while the disappearance of Bei Bei, Ma Xiaotao’s absence, and prior tournament events had left personnel strained. 262
The Inner Court was short on capable members after deaths, retirements, and Bei Bei’s disappearance. This pressure appeared to have been pushed onto the Outer Court, whose students moved with visible strain and urgency. 262
Shrek’s Soul Tool Department, which had begun improving during the exchange period, had declined after the tournament cheating scandal. Huo Yuhao observed a stark contrast between its diminished state and the flourishing soul-tool environment of the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineer Academy and Mingde Hall. 262
