Background
Itachi is Fugaku Uchiha’s eldest son, an ANBU shinobi, and one of Konoha’s most celebrated young geniuses, praised as the “second Kakashi.” 155 163 The Third Hokage personally appoints him as Arima’s protector, while Kakashi recommends him as a patient sparring partner and teacher. 175
Before the Uchiha coup, Itachi serves as a double agent: the clan expects him to use his ANBU post to investigate Konoha’s leadership, while the village assigns him to monitor the Uchiha. 218 He repeatedly argues that the clan must avoid violent policing and rebellion, fearing that a coup would destroy both the Uchiha and Konoha. 181
Shisui’s death leaves Itachi with Shisui’s responsibility to protect peace between the village and clan. The trauma triggers Itachi’s Mangekyō Sharingan. 197 198
Appearance
Itachi is a handsome young man with jet-black hair. During his service to Konoha, he wears a black high-collared short-sleeved shirt beneath standard ninja plate armor and carries a Ninja Blade across his back. 175
- Scarlet Sharingan eyes; his Mangekyō pattern resembles a three-bladed Fūma Shuriken. 198 215
- Wears Akatsuki’s uniform and a ring engraved with the character for “Vermilion” after joining the organization. 248 321
- Blood tears appear after heavy Mangekyō Sharingan use. 198 230
Personality
Itachi is composed, analytical, and exceptionally cautious in combat. He tests unknown opponents with ordinary weapons and ninjutsu before escalating to his Mangekyō Sharingan, as shown during Tobi’s infiltration of the Uchiha compound. 213 He also adapts rapidly, using clones, crows, fire, mist, shuriken, and layered deception to create openings against stronger foes. 215 230
He seeks coexistence between Konoha and the Uchiha Clan, believing that a coup would devastate the village, invite foreign invasion, and endanger future generations. 181 218 219 This conviction eventually leads him to accept the destruction of his own clan as the lesser disaster. 219 220
Sasuke is Itachi’s most inviolable emotional boundary. He tolerates threats against himself, the Uchiha, and Konoha, but responds with lethal anger when Simu uses Sasuke to provoke him. 214 217 Even after forcing Sasuke to hate him, Itachi repeatedly attempts to stop the Jashin Cult from turning his brother into a vessel. 235 236 243
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan
Itachi’s ocular power overwhelms ordinary Sharingan users. When he reveals his Mangekyō to the Uchiha clan, the pressure leaves the assembled shinobi unable to match him. 219
- Possesses superior dynamic vision and perception, allowing him to narrowly follow Killer B’s extreme speed. 298
- Uses the Sharingan to suppress weaker Uchiha Eye Power and gain decisive advantages in genjutsu. 205 219
- Awakens the Mangekyō through Shisui’s death and the emotional burden of Shisui’s final request. 197 198
- Repeated Mangekyō use drains his Chakra, causes bleeding from his eyes, and progressively worsens his vision. 230 299 300
Genjutsu
Itachi is a highly refined genjutsu user who can deceive opponents through direct ocular illusions, crow-based misdirection, and even sound. 175 215 298
- Creates a convincing illusion in which Arima appears to hold a blade to his neck. 175
- Deceives Simu into believing wooden spears have impaled him, creating an opening for a kunai strike. 215
- Uses sound-based genjutsu through weapon clashes when Killer B avoids direct eye contact. 298
- Sound-based genjutsu can be broken when the Eight-Tails disrupts Killer B’s Chakra from within. 298
Tsukuyomi
Tsukuyomi is Itachi’s Mangekyō Sharingan genjutsu, capable of trapping targets in an intense psychological world. 215
- Uses it against Simu after their prolonged clash of Wood Release, fire, clones, and genjutsu. 215
- Forces Sasuke to relive their parents’ deaths repeatedly, awakening Sasuke’s One-Tomoe Sharingan and directing his grief into hatred. 233
- Later uses it against Sasuke’s Apostle form, destabilizing the Uchiha souls inhabiting his body. 243
- Its heavy ocular burden makes Itachi reluctant to use it before confronting other Mangekyō-level threats. 222
Fire Release and Wind Release
Itachi combines powerful Fire Release with precise shuriken tactics and deception rather than relying solely on ocular abilities. 175 215
- Fire Release: Fireball Jutsu — Used against Arima during their spar. 175
- Fire Release: Great Fire Dragon Technique — Matches Simu’s Wood Dragon in destructive force. 215
- Fire Release: Dragon Flame Jutsu — Burns Simu’s Deep Forest Emergence and later strikes Uchiha Inabi during his fight with Obito. 214 234
- Wind Release: Blade of Wind — Used to sever Simu’s chakra-absorbing tentacles. 236
Amaterasu
Amaterasu produces black flames capable of threatening targets that overpower Itachi’s Susanoo physically. 239 299
- Engulfs Simu after the Jashin Cult’s attack on Konoha, though Simu survives by shedding his burned body. 239
- Burns the Eight-Tails and forces Killer B and Gyūki to treat it as their greatest threat. 299
- Requires preparation and heavily strains Itachi’s Mangekyō, allowing opponents to evade or counter it if another object blocks its path. 300
Susanoo
Itachi’s Susanoo is an orange-red chakra warrior that develops from an incomplete skeleton into an armored form. 230 236
- Its initial skeletal form barely withstands Fugaku’s Lightning Release: Thunder God. 230
- Protects Itachi from Uchiha Inabi’s Sage-enhanced attacks and repeatedly kills Inabi despite his Izanagi. 234
- Its armored form can wield the Yata Mirror, which completely blocks a Tailed Beast Bomb. 299
- Maintaining Susanoo consumes immense Chakra and leaves Itachi vulnerable once his reserves are depleted. 230 236
Shurikenjutsu, Clones, and Tactical Combat
Itachi specializes in unpredictable projectile attacks and battlefield manipulation. 175 215
- Throws shuriken along different trajectories and speeds, then controls them with chakra threads. 175
- Uses Fūma Shuriken, steel wire, fire, water, mist, and crow clones in coordinated feints. 215 298
- His Crow Clone is realistic enough to deceive Fugaku’s Mangekyō Sharingan and lure him into an explosive-tag ambush. 230
- Uses attrition, terrain, and deception to endure Fugaku’s superior Susanoo rather than confronting it directly. 225 230
Equipment
- Ninja Blade — Carried across his back during his Konoha service and used in close combat. 175
- Kunai — Used for testing Tobi’s intangibility and striking through combat openings. 213 215
- Shuriken and Fūma Shuriken — Used with chakra threads, steel wire, explosive tags, and clone techniques. 175 215 230
- Akatsuki ring — Engraved with “Vermilion.” 248 321
- Akatsuki cloak — Worn during the abduction of Yugito and the assault on Killer B. 297
Relationships
- Sasuke Uchiha — Younger brother and Itachi’s highest personal priority; Itachi massacres the clan to preserve Sasuke, then deliberately cultivates Sasuke’s hatred while trying to protect him from the Jashin Cult. 214 233 235 243
- Fugaku Uchiha — Father and Uchiha clan head; they fight as opposing Mangekyō users during the coup, ending when Fugaku cannot bring himself to kill his son. 217 225 230
- Mikoto Uchiha — Mother; she accepts Itachi’s decision and entrusts Sasuke’s future to him before her death. 233
- Shisui Uchiha — Closest friend, mentor, and fellow advocate for peace; Shisui’s death awakens Itachi’s Mangekyō Sharingan and leaves him carrying Shisui’s final wish. 181 197 198
- Kishou Arima — Sparring partner and companion under Itachi’s protection; Itachi later entrusts Arima with Sasuke’s safety. 175 220 233
- Uchiha Izumi — Childhood friend who has cared for Itachi since he rescued her during the Nine-Tails Incident; he coldly rejects her support to preserve his resolve before the massacre. 220
- Obito Uchiha / Tobi — Akatsuki recruiter and masked accomplice in the Uchiha operation; Obito later rescues the exhausted Itachi from Jiraiya and Tsunade. 213 219 243
- Kamizuki Simu — Enemy and fellow Akatsuki member whose actions against Sasuke repeatedly derail Itachi’s plans. 214 235 248
- Biwa Jūzō — Akatsuki partner; Jūzō sacrifices himself to shield Itachi from Killer B’s Tailed Beast Bomb, repaying a life Itachi previously saved. 248 299
- Orochimaru — Covets Itachi’s Sharingan but is effortlessly trapped in Itachi’s genjutsu when attempting to steal it. 248
Story Role / Major Arcs
Uchiha–Konoha Tensions
Itachi identifies attempts to damage both the Red Spider Lily Merchant Guild and the Uchiha Clan’s reputation. He advises Fugaku to restrain violent police tactics and prevent a coup, but realizes that many clan members are already committed to rebellion. 181
After Shisui’s death, Itachi awakens the Mangekyō Sharingan and inherits Shisui’s goal of preserving peace between the Uchiha and Konoha. 197 198
Conflict with Root and Simu
When Simu uses a wooden crow given by Sasuke to force a meeting, Itachi attacks him in fury. Their battle reveals Simu’s massive Wood Release, hand-seal-less ninjutsu, resistance to genjutsu, and Root connection. Itachi responds with layered tactics before trapping him in Tsukuyomi. 214 215
The battle exposes Itachi’s Mangekyō to Fugaku and the clan elders. Under coercion, Itachi outwardly pledges support for the coup while privately concluding that it would lead to disaster. 217 218
Uchiha Coup and Massacre
Itachi reports the planned coup and Akatsuki’s infiltration to Konoha’s leadership. Danzo presents him with the choice of joining the coup or destroying the clan to save Sasuke. 218
After observing the Uchiha Military Police’s abuse of villagers and seeing Sasuke’s innocent rivalry with Naruto, Itachi resolves to stop the coup by destroying the clan. He asks Tobi for help and offers to join Akatsuki in return. 219
The coup begins prematurely after Uchiha Inabi provokes explosions throughout the clan grounds. Itachi allies pragmatically with Tobi, confronts Fugaku, and ultimately kills his father after Fugaku chooses not to strike the final blow. 222 223 230 231
Itachi then kills rebellious Uchiha fighters and later massacres civilians remaining in the clan district. He accepts exile and forces Sasuke to witness their parents’ deaths through Tsukuyomi, intending to make Sasuke survive through hatred. 231 233
Sasuke and the Jashin Cult
Simu interrupts Itachi’s attempt to control Sasuke’s future, recruits Sasuke as a potential God Child for the Jashin Cult, and implants curse energy into him. Itachi fights desperately to stop the ritual, but Sasuke willingly accepts the power in exchange for the chance to kill his brother. 235 236
When Sasuke becomes a vessel for the Uchiha clan’s collective hatred, Itachi realizes that his plan to leave Sasuke as Konoha’s surviving Uchiha has completely failed. He nonetheless continues trying to free his brother from the corruption. 240 243
Akatsuki Membership and Tailed Beast Hunts
Itachi officially joins Akatsuki as an S-rank rogue ninja under the codename Vermilion Bird and is partnered with Biwa Jūzō. 248 He remains hostile toward Simu but restrains himself within Akatsuki’s hierarchy, seeking information about Sasuke instead. 248
With Jūzō, Itachi abducts Yugito Nii and targets Killer B, the Eight-Tails’ perfect Jinchūriki. He displays sound-based genjutsu, Amaterasu, Susanoo, and the Yata Mirror, but Killer B’s partnership with Gyūki prevents a swift capture. 297 298 299
Battle with Sasuke
Sasuke eventually confronts Itachi alone to avenge the Uchiha clan. Itachi counters Sasuke’s improved shurikenjutsu, Sage Chakra, Cursed Seal, Fire Release, and Kirin with Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and fourth-stage Susanoo. 321
