Background / History

Early life and Jashin’s blessing

Hidan was an orphan raised within the Jashin Cult and initially served as a trainee. He secretly entered the cult’s Blood Pool during its annual festival and emerged alive, declaring himself Jashin’s most loyal representative. The blessing granted him immortality and curse power, immediately elevating him above ordinary cultists. 2

His arrival coincided with Kamizuki Simu’s emergence from the same pool. Hidan took Simu’s claim to be Jashin’s chief representative as a personal insult and attacked him at once. Though Simu repeatedly beheaded and dismembered him, Hidan’s body remained active and recoverable. 2 3 4

Simu’s rival and test subject

Hidan repeatedly attempted to assassinate Simu, only to be decapitated and used for genetic analysis in return. The Jashin Cult’s leader later had Hidan demonstrate his abilities in a laboratory, confirming that Hidan could transfer self-inflicted wounds to a target after obtaining that target’s blood. 5 6

Over the next three months, his constant failed attacks on Simu became brutal training. Although he never overcame Simu, he developed far greater taijutsu ability and learned to fight without regard for his own injuries. 11 16

Simu later implanted Hidan with the Parasitic Spider Kagune. Hidan initially rejected the enhancement, but quickly embraced it after discovering that its silk could reconnect his severed body, retrieve his weapon, and restore him from otherwise disabling injuries. 13 14 18

Conflict with Kikuchi Miura

During the mission against Gato, Hidan clashed with Kikuchi Miura, a senior Jashin Cult operative. Miura used Water Release, explosive tags, clones, and restraint techniques to exploit the operational limits of Hidan’s immortality, repeatedly decapitating and immobilizing him. 17 18

Hidan ultimately turned the battle around with Parasitic Spider silk. After grazing Miura with his spear and acquiring his blood, Hidan completed the Jashin Ritual and pierced his own heart, inflicting the same fatal wound on Miura. 18

The Cult Leader’s possession and aftermath

When the Cult Leader used Living Corpse Reincarnation to take over Simu’s body, Hidan recognized the impostor because the possessed body behaved too patiently toward him. Believing Simu’s soul had been erased, Hidan fought the Cult Leader without hesitation despite the risk of destroying Simu’s body. 39 40

Hidan activated the Jashin Ritual, killed the Cult Leader through Simu’s body, and began massacring the Jashin Cult out of grief and rage. Simu later revealed that he had survived, leaving Hidan embarrassed, furious, and once again unable to challenge him successfully. 40 41

Appearance

Hidan is initially depicted as a blood-covered boy who appears roughly eleven or twelve years old. He has silver hair usually slicked back, pale skin, and a manic grin; he commonly wears monochrome clothing or a long black trench coat. 2 7 28

  • Silver, slicked-back hair. 2 39
  • Pale complexion, often splattered with blood after combat. 16
  • Wears a black-and-white ritual form after activating the Jashin Ritual: black skin covered in white markings. 2 18
  • Carries a pitch-black spear as his primary weapon. 2 16
  • Can produce spider silk from the neck and other body parts after receiving the Parasitic Spider Kagune. 14 18

Personality

Hidan is a violent, arrogant fanatic whose devotion to Jashin is inseparable from his love of pain, bloodshed, and sacrifice. He treats severe injuries as pleasurable experiences and considers anyone without Jashin’s blessing to be an insincere believer unworthy of respect. 2 16 37

He is impulsive and openly dismissive of planning, intelligence gathering, and study. He cannot read, has not meaningfully engaged with books for years, and prefers direct killing to preparation or strategy. 9 14 47

Despite his hostility toward Simu, Hidan develops an intense attachment to him. He regards Simu as the only fellow representative he truly cares about, recognizes him through his behavior rather than appearance, and becomes willing to destroy the cult when he believes Simu has died. 7 39 40

Abilities & Skills

Immortal Body

Hidan’s core blessing is an immortal body that survives injuries which would instantly kill ordinary people.

  • Remains alive after impalement, explosions, burning, decapitation, and dismemberment. 2 12 14
  • His detached head and body can continue acting independently. 3
  • Recovers rapidly from physical damage, including wounds that shatter bones or pierce the heart. 17 40
  • Still requires food and can suffer hunger despite claiming he does not need to eat. 10
  • Can be restrained, immobilized, or separated into pieces even if he cannot be killed outright. 17 18

Jashin Ritual

Also called Jujutsu: Shiji Hyoketsu, Hidan’s curse ritual synchronizes damage dealt to himself with a blood-linked target.

  • Requires him to obtain and ingest the target’s blood. 5 40
  • Requires him to stand inside the Jashin Cult symbol: a triangle enclosed by a circle. 2 40
  • Transforms his skin black with white markings while active. 2 18
  • Self-inflicted wounds are mirrored on the cursed target. 2 7
  • Killed a bandit by piercing his own heart and later killed Kikuchi Miura through the same method. 7 18
  • Cannot affect an enemy whose blood he has not acquired. 5 18

Parasitic Spider

A Kagune variant created and implanted by Simu, primarily used for silk manipulation and bodily reconstruction.

  • Fires silk from Hidan’s neck and body to reconnect severed parts. 14 18
  • Allows him to reattach detached limbs and restore his body after dismemberment. 14 50
  • Can pull his spear back or alter its trajectory using silk threads. 18
  • Simu retains control over the Kagune and can prevent it from restoring Hidan. 14 41

Kagune Transformation

Hidan can shape his Kagune into a large crimson Three-Moon Blood Scythe.

  • Forms from his shoulder blades as a broad, triple-curved cutting weapon. 47
  • Demonstrates Hidan’s capacity to use Kagune creatively rather than solely for regeneration. 47

Taijutsu and Spear Combat

Hidan fights with extreme aggression, accepting enemy attacks in exchange for opportunities to wound them.

  • His three months of combat with Simu substantially improve his speed and physical force. 11 16
  • Uses a self-sacrificial style that abandons defense to land spear strikes. 16
  • Can overwhelm ordinary cultists and survive exchanges that would be fatal to conventional fighters. 16 21
  • His combat ability is strong enough to pressure the Cult Leader even while the latter controls Simu’s Kagune. 40

Elemental Ninjutsu

Simu modifies Hidan’s body to refine all five elemental Chakra natures and embeds ninjutsu knowledge directly into him. 46

  • Uses Fire Style: Flame Bullet to launch explosive flames. 47
  • Uses Earth Style: Earth Wall as cover and defense. 47
  • Uses Dochu Senko no Jutsu to travel underground and launch surprise attacks. 47
  • Attempts Wind Release: Great Breakthrough, though Simu criticizes his poor tactical use of ninjutsu. 47

  • Jashin Cult necklace — Used by cult members as an identifying and contact item during missions. 14

  • Jashin Cult Leader — Raised Hidan within the cult, but Hidan holds little affection for him and eagerly attacks after learning he has taken Simu’s body. 6 39 40
  • Kikuchi Miura — Senior cult operative and temporary supervisor; Miura initially defeats and restrains Hidan, but Hidan later kills him through the Jashin Ritual. 14 17 18
