Harry, standing to the side, had his mouth agape; it was his first time witnessing such an aggressive way to open a door.
But it had to be said, this door-opening method, full of surprises, was indeed highly effective.
Fluffy, who had already caught the scent of people outside and was preparing to give them a massive fright the moment the door opened, had its nose violently kissed by a wooden door flying in from the side. As the "little cutie" raised by Hagrid, it was, without a doubt, a ferocious beast.
Standing two and a half meters tall at the shoulder with three bucket-sized dog heads, it was a three-headed dog by name and a "little cutie" by reputation. Originally from Greece, it was the kind of terrifying existence that local wizards would immediately scream and Apparate away from upon sight. As the guardian of the underworld in Muggle mythology, it possessed an imposing physique and a fierce appearance capable of stopping children from crying at night.
Although its three pairs of dog eyes could clearly track the trajectory of the flying wooden door, its range of motion was limited by the wrist-thick steel chain around its neck. It could only watch helplessly as the wooden door slammed coldly against its face.
"Awoo! Woof, woof, woof!"
The unexpectedly great force knocked Fluffy out of its composure. It suddenly felt a bit aggrieved; wasn't it promised that it would have all the meat it could eat every day, only need to sleep, and just scare the little wizards who came to look for excitement during night strolls? This was broad daylight! And Dumbledore never said anyone would take a door panel to its face!
"Whoa!" Harry exclaimed again, "It's so huge!" He took two steps back, distancing himself from the doorway.
He was a bit frightened by the super-giant dog crouching behind the door.
"But, Ezio, did you make it cry?"
The kind-hearted little Harry felt the dog was a bit pitiful. The two loud 'bang-thud' sounds from just a moment ago clearly sounded painful, and they had landed squarely on the dog's face.
"Did it cry?"
Ezio raised his eyes to look, meeting the gaze of the middle pair of eyes on Fluffy—the very dog head that had been hit by the door panel.
"Woof, woof, woof, woof, woof, woof!!!!"
After locking eyes with Ezio, Fluffy immediately bared its teeth and lunged forward like a vicious dog. It was truly a bit angry this time. One large head shoved directly into the door frame, but that was as far as it could go. It couldn't get out; the chain Hagrid had rigged for it was sturdy enough to bind a dragon in a complex knot. Three-headed dogs were powerful, but Fluffy wasn't fully grown yet—only a year or so old—and it simply couldn't break free.
Watching the large dog barking frantically at him and spraying saliva everywhere, Ezio scratched his chin, then reached into his bag and pulled out a large wooden mallet that a normal person wouldn't typically carry around; the head of the mallet was almost as large as a human head.
With its eyes blocked by the door frame, Fluffy couldn't see what was happening outside. It just wanted to scare the two little guys away so they would run off, terrified, and stop disturbing its nap in the middle of the day.
Just then, Harry suddenly took two more steps back because Ezio had already swung the wooden mallet!
"Hup!"
With a sharp exhale of force, the wooden mallet swung in a semicircle and smashed straight into Fluffy's wet, glistening nose. In that instant, the barking vanished, and a pained, aggrieved howl of "Awoo" filled everyone's ears.
"There, now it's crying." Ezio put away the mallet with satisfaction and used a cleaning charm to sweep away the saliva that had splattered onto him.
Fluffy, having shrunk back behind the door with a 'whoosh', curled up into a ball, looking quite cowardly. It licked its nose with its large tongue, carefully touched the tip of its nose with a paw thicker than a human waist, and then shuddered from the pain.
"You didn't even sniff to see who it was before barking; you think you're pretty tough, don't you!"
Ezio, who had kicked the door, acted as if he were the victim, pointing at Fluffy from the doorway with a master-like reprimand.
"Woo?" Fluffy's three heads huddled together to look at each other, their eyes filled with a trace of confusion. "Woof?"
It seemed to be asking, 'Do I know you?'
"Hagrid told me all the details about how he fed you milk back in the day."
Ezio picked at his ear. He made time to visit Hagrid almost every week, partly to clear his head and partly to hunt for magical materials that were hard to find on the market but available in the Forbidden Forest. It wasn't a freebie, though; he had sent letters to the Three Broomsticks and ordered a dozen barrels of Hagrid's favorite whiskey for him.
Hagrid, once he'd had a drink, would say anything in front of Ezio. After all, Ezio held a high level of trust in Hagrid's heart, and since Ezio had even brought up Dumbledore as a guarantor, Hagrid naturally spoke freely.
"Hagrid was trying to set you up with Fang before, right? I really don't understand what he was thinking. You were only three months old then. It's a good thing Fang is such a coward, or I'm afraid its dog life would have been forfeit."
Upon hearing these words, Fluffy started to believe Ezio. After all, these were things only it and Hagrid knew. But Fang... one of Fluffy's heads curled its lips in a sneer. Even if Fang had the guts back then, it wouldn't have been enough for a single bite for one of its heads. Did they really think a three-headed dog was just a dog with two extra heads?
By the time it was a year old, it was already running rampant in the Forbidden Forest. Only a few magical creatures posed any threat to it. Once it reached adulthood, it would be the king of the Forbidden Forest. The venom secreted in its mouth was so potent that even a dragon would be left cursing and flapping its wings to fly away after a single bite.
High magic resistance, high speed, immense strength, three hearts, three lives, and corrosive, highly toxic venom—it occupied the same ecological niche as a dragon. Aside from not being able to fly, it had nothing but advantages. Plus, it could take turns sleeping with its three heads, staying awake 24 hours a day. It was the ultimate guard dog. Although it was extremely difficult to domesticate, it was very obedient once trained.
Realizing that the people outside might be "their own," Fluffy licked its dog face and leaned in. It carefully sniffed the scent on Ezio and Harry. Sure enough, they had dealt with Hagrid quite often. Anyone who could be treated to Rock Cakes by Hagrid was definitely one of their own.
Its long, snake-like, dragon-like tail wagged behind it with a loud thwack, seemingly creating sonic booms.
"Woo-woof!"
Fluffy lay down on the ground, its three heads lined up side by side. As a dog raised by Hagrid since it was a pup and having endured the "iron fist of love" from its old father, Fluffy's temperament was much more docile than other three-headed dogs. If Fluffy hadn't been obedient and smart, Dumbledore wouldn't have put it here to guard the door. He knew Fluffy had a sense of proportion and wouldn't truly harm the little wizards; it would only follow orders to scare them.
"You know it?"
Harry looked at Ezio and the tail-wagging giant dog with some surprise.
"You were busy riding Buckbeak when I was chatting with Hagrid in his hut and we talked about Fluffy."
"Fluffy? A male? Then how could it and Fang..."
"Female." Ezio shook his head, then walked inside the door and rubbed Fluffy's large dog head. "Don't count on Hagrid's naming sense; he just makes it up. But female three-headed dogs are larger than males and look even more ferocious."
"Don't go around scaring people for no reason next time, got it?"
Fluffy, feeling quite comfortable under Ezio's petting, let out a few whimpers. It had been a bit bored these past few months.
"Next time I come, I'll bring you some fresh beef you like. Sorry about hitting your head earlier."
The previously fierce dog face was now extremely docile. Upon hearing there would be extra food, Fluffy was even happier. To it, those two hits earlier were a bit painful, but they didn't even amount to a fraction of Hagrid's "iron fist of love." When it was still small, it had chewed Hagrid's bed to pieces while teething and was firmly held down by its butt and spanked by Hagrid. It had howled miserably. Hagrid hadn't been able to fix the bed for a long time and had slept on the floor, leaving him in a foul mood the next morning.
The super-sized dog satisfied their urge to pet it; Fluffy's fur was smooth and soft, and the texture was absolutely amazing. After agreeing to come see it again next time, Fluffy wagged its tail and obediently watched them leave.
"Hmm, I managed to get some three-headed dog venom. This is good stuff; it's very hard to buy on the market."
Ezio put away his spoils with satisfaction. Since he was already here, he couldn't return empty-handed. If he traded this material for money, it would be enough to buy ten cows to satisfy Fluffy's appetite. It was worth more than gold.
