Background / History
Dumbledore is Hogwarts’ headmaster and a widely recognized “White Wizard,” whose authority protects students from outside threats while they remain at the school. He defeated Gellert Grindelwald, his former close friend, but never denied their relationship. His reputation is formidable enough that few are willing to challenge him or Hogwarts directly. 19
He had known Tom Riddle as a child and recognized his greed, possessiveness, coldness, magical talent, and Parseltongue ability. Although he knew Tom was responsible for the Chamber of Secrets murders rather than Hagrid, Dumbledore did not stop his rise at the time; he later refused Tom a Hogwarts teaching position because he believed Tom’s intentions were impure. 39
Dumbledore’s past with Grindelwald remains emotionally complicated. Grindelwald states that Dumbledore opposed him after foreseeing the catastrophic consequences of Grindelwald’s continued campaign, ultimately winning the Elder Wand in their duel. Dumbledore still considers Grindelwald his friend and later gives Ezio Grindelwald’s original wand and a broken pendant should Grindelwald choose to leave Nurmengard. 88
Appearance
An elderly wizard with a long, well-kept silver-white beard, clear bright-blue eyes, and half-moon spectacles. 4
- Carries a knotted, dark-gray wand with a glaze-like patina. 38
- Possesses the Elder Wand during much of the story. 83
- Has a strong affinity with phoenixes; Fawkes sought him out and contracted with him after Dumbledore came of age. 114
Personality
Dumbledore is patient, empathetic, and tolerant, particularly toward students whose conduct or powers unsettle others. He offers Ezio protection, financial assistance, and repeated guidance following Giovanni’s death, while acknowledging that he cannot force Ezio to abandon vengeance. 4 24
He favors containment and supervision over decisive preemptive action. Though deeply uneasy about Ezio’s destructive potential, he keeps him at Hogwarts because expulsion could make the situation worse. He similarly struggles with leadership decisions, often accepting burdensome public responsibilities because he believes worse people would take control otherwise. 36 39 74
His pragmatism can be morally ambiguous. He supports or permits dangerous plans involving Harry and Voldemort, including cultivating Harry’s willingness to face Voldemort despite the cruelty of that burden. 39 107
Abilities & Skills
Exceptional Magical Power
Dumbledore possesses magical strength sufficient to instantly suppress a fragment of Voldemort’s soul with the Imperius Curse.
- His magic causes Voldemort’s Horcrux fragment to manifest and tremble under direct suppression. 38
- He is highly proficient with the Unforgivable Curses, though he seldom needs to use them. 38
- His magical power and reputation make Hogwarts a safe refuge from most external threats. 19
Legilimency
Dumbledore is a powerful Legilimens capable of detecting deception in most people.
- He cannot read Ezio’s thoughts due to Ezio’s Assassin’s Focus, which resembles refined Occlumency. 36
- He uses extracted memories and the Elder Wand to breach magical protections around Salazar Slytherin’s portrait. 83
Memory Magic
Dumbledore maintains and uses a Pensieve to examine memories and investigate Voldemort’s past.
- He guides Ezio through his memory of recruiting young Tom Riddle from an orphanage. 74
- He can extract memories from his temple and insert them into enchanted portraits. 83
Phoenix Magic
Dumbledore has an exceptional bond with phoenixes.
- Fawkes is contracted to him and can carry messages through magical flames. 105
- His Patronus takes the form of a phoenix. 114
Knowledge of Dark Magic and Horcruxes
Dumbledore investigates Voldemort’s survival, Horcruxes, and methods of immortality.
- He confirms Voldemort survived in a wraith-like state in Albania. 39
- He recognizes Harry as a Horcrux and explains that Voldemort himself must destroy the soul fragment within Harry. 24 107
- He retrieves and studies Horcrux-related evidence alongside Ezio. 75 105
