History
Former Power and Decline
The Heavenly Sword Sect was once a major force in the Third Heaven. Its sword cultivators left such an impression that Yuwen Chengfeng studied their cultivation methods before abandoning the attempt as too difficult. Liang Wensheng also recounts that a previous Sect Master used the Soul Devouring Nether Banner to make the Third Heaven submit 560 777 799.
Its decline followed a Sect Master entering seclusion thousands of years earlier and never returning. Authority passed to the elders, whose growing selfishness produced factional struggles. Younger disciples became occupied with internal politics rather than cultivation, leaving the sect short of new talent 560.
Within roughly a millennium, six or seven Heavenly Spirit Secret Realms were seized by rivals or destroyed through improper guardianship. Lost inheritances also left the sect’s sword techniques incomplete. It eventually became an “unranked” sect vulnerable to invasion and annexation 560 631 684.
Ye Tian’s Recruitment
Ning Suxin recruits Ye Tian after he enters the Third Heaven through the Heavenly Gate. He chooses the Heavenly Sword Sect over the better-resourced Tianyi Sect because he considers its sword-cultivation tradition more suitable for his path. He also hopes to comprehend another sword heart to lessen the harm caused by his Dao of Slaughter 559 560.
His initial standing is awkward. He enters as an inner disciple through Ning Suxin’s support and his status as a lower-realm arrival, but becomes an outer sect steward after returning from the secret realm. His low cultivation obscures his unusually advanced sword comprehension 562 613.
Ye Tian’s later achievements become a source of renewed confidence. He thwarts Jiang Yukun’s attempt to seize the Demon Sealing Tower Secret Realm, kills Xu Hu, and helps eliminate the Three-Ringed Golden Saber Sect’s planted agents. His example encourages disciples to pursue sword cultivation rather than cultivation realms alone 631 714.
Annexation Crisis
The Three-Ringed Golden Saber Sect spends a century preparing to annex the Heavenly Sword Sect. Its schemes include infiltrators, interference in secret-realm trials, and attempts to exploit the sect’s weakened leadership 568 577 713.
The acquisition of a new ownerless Heavenly Spirit Secret Realm breaks the fragile balance between the two sects. Liang Wensheng brings back its entrance object, but rogue cultivators remain inside and resist surrendering control. The Heavenly Sword Sect considers recruiting them rather than forcing an immediate confrontation 704 705.
Using Liang Wensheng’s killing of rival disciples as a pretext, Sect Master Jiang demands that he be handed over. The three Great Elders refuse. Once fighting begins, the Heavenly Sword Sect uses its home territory to evacuate wounded disciples, treat them, and return them to battle 713 716 717.
The crisis escalates when the Yang Family attacks with its Integration-stage ancestor while the Three-Ringed Golden Saber Sect ties down part of the sect’s forces. Li Jianchi sacrifices his essence blood, Nascent Soul, and divine soul to wield the Law of Killing. Other elders follow his example, destroying the rival sect’s core forces and killing the Yang Family’s elites 751 753 755 758.
Ye Tian defeats the Yang Family ancestor, ending the immediate threat. Victory leaves the Heavenly Sword Sect heavily weakened: Li Jianchi and the defending elders have fallen, and numerous disciples are dead or injured 767 768.
Reconstruction and the Century-Later Return
Ye Tian leaves Zhu Qian to organize the survivors. Disciples divide into groups to recover resources from the Yang Family and the Three-Ringed Golden Saber Sect, treating reconstruction as a way to honor the elders’ sacrifices 769.
By Ye Tian’s return a century later, Liang Wensheng is Sect Master. The sect has absorbed its defeated enemies’ forces and secret realms, becoming a regional great sect. However, continued conflict with a rising lineage places it under renewed pressure 794 795.
Liang Wensheng has reached late Deity Transformation through unorthodox arts, at the cost of his remaining lifespan. He asks Ye Tian to ensure that the sect’s legacy survives and that it enjoys peace after his death 794 795.
Later Account: Wei Hongyang and the Corpse God Sect
Later chapters depict a Heavenly Sword Sect led by Wei Hongyang, with Zhang Erxi named as its Founding Ancestor. These chapters describe Ye Tian as a guest official with no prior history with the sect; the connection to the earlier Third Heaven account is not established in the cited chapters 2087 2089 2095.
Wei Hongyang recognizes Ye Tian’s contributions and offers him the guest-official position. Yuan Yao returns after a thousand years of exile, Yuan Yue joins the sect, and the three settle on Bright Light Peak while Ye Tian recovers 2087.
After obtaining a dilapidated sword from the Sword Washing Pool, Ye Tian accompanies Yuan Yao to search for the Founding Ancestor. They recover Zhang Erxi’s preserved corpse from a lava pool and communicate with his projection. Zhang reveals that he founded the sect after comprehending the sword intent within a broken sword tip 2091 2095 2100.
During the conflict with the Corpse God Sect, Ye Tian returns from cultivation and blocks an attack by its Golden Immortal expert Yang Chengtian, saving the Heavenly Sword Sect’s members 2096 2099.
Organization and Recruitment
- Elder administration — During the absent Sect Master’s seclusion, twelve elders govern the sect. The Great Elder, Second Elder, and Third Elder are its foremost authorities and normally cultivate in the main hall 560 563 704.
- Disciple divisions — The sect distinguishes inner disciples, outer disciples, and stewards. Decent talent can secure inner-disciple status, while particularly promising recruits receive substantial support 578 613.
- Family-backed recruitment — Financial dependence on powerful families leads the sect to admit connected disciples and tolerate some of their bullying to preserve outside support 613.
- Mission incentives — Missions offer outer disciples a route toward inner-disciple status. The elders accept the risks of injury and death as a last-resort method of increasing combat strength 630 631.
- Contribution points — Missions award contribution points, which can be exchanged for opportunities such as cultivation in the Sword Domain. Ye Tian receives three hundred points for the Xu Hu mission 634.
- Investment in Liang Wensheng — The elders concentrate resources on him in the hope that a Deity Transformation breakthrough will strengthen the sect against its rivals 613.
Sword Arts and Combat Capabilities
Sword Cultivation
The sect specializes in cultivating the sword heart and higher sword-path attainments alongside ordinary cultivation.
- The broader sword-cultivation path progresses through the sword heart, sword core, and sword embryo; Ye Tian also considers whether the leading elders possess sword souls 558 563.
- Its techniques produce distinctive sword intent recognizable as belonging to the sect. Possessing a standard sect flying sword alone is insufficient to reproduce it 686.
- Lost inheritances leave many disciples pursuing cultivation realms without mastering the sword path, a weakness challenged by Ye Tian’s example 631.
Combined Sword Formation
- More than twenty Nascent Soul cultivators combine their flying swords and sword energy into a single multicolored greatsword 589.
- Ye Tian identifies the formation as one of the sect’s ultimate techniques 589.
Sword Nascent Soul Secret Art
- The sect retains a technique described as resembling mutual destruction rather than complete mastery of the sword path 631.
- Its willingness to threaten mutual destruction helps deter stronger external forces, including the Yang Family 633.
Sacrificial Law Attacks
- Li Jianchi combines his essence blood, Nascent Soul, and divine soul to unleash the Law of Killing, attracting heavenly tribulation 753.
- Other elders burn their life force to release their strongest law abilities, eliminating enemy forces and buying time for Ye Tian’s breakthrough 755 756 758.
- These attacks destroy their users’ souls and Nascent Souls, making the sacrifice irreversible 755 768.
Facilities and Resources
Third Heaven Facilities
- Main gate — Built entirely from cold jade, with three large blue characters surrounded by faint sword energy. At Ye Tian’s arrival, it is unguarded and exposed to severe cold winds 560.
- Main hall — The usual secluded-cultivation site of the three Great Elders and the meeting place for major sect emergencies 704.
- Sword Collection Pavilion — Preserves sword manuals collected since the sect’s founding. Their embedded sword intent can injure readers with insufficient cultivation or unstable sword hearts; even Liang Wensheng once endured only three days before being carried out 562.
- Demon Sealing Tower Secret Realm — The sect’s internal trial realm, entered through the Demon Sealing Tower. Jiang Yukun attempts to exploit its trials to seize control 568 714.
- Sword Domain — A cultivation opportunity requiring sufficient contribution points; knowledge of it is restricted, and Ye Tian’s outer-steward position initially denies him access 634.
- Celestial Book Pavilion — Becomes crowded as disciples seek missions during the renewed training effort 631.
- Refining facilities — Ye Tian’s cave mansion contains enough sword-refining materials for him to upgrade the Azure Decision Cloud Piercing Sword 604.
- Mountain protection formation — At Ye Tian’s century-later return, its soul mist emits an aura of death and decay 794.
Later Facilities
- Bright Light Peak — Residence of Ye Tian, Yuan Yao, and Yuan Yue after Ye Tian becomes a guest official 2087.
- Sword Washing Pool — Provides true swords during the Sword Washing Convention, with acquisition dependent on compatibility and destiny 2087.
- Sword Washing Convention — Yuan Yao and Gao Rongxuan obtain powerful Sect Master swords, while Ye Tian selects the dilapidated sword he names Wuju 2091.
Notable Artifact
- Soul Devouring Nether Banner — Historically used by a previous Sect Master to dominate the Third Heaven. Some sect disciples voluntarily placed their souls within it when unable to extend their lifespans. After it was lost, the sect declined; Liang Wensheng later wields it to protect the sect and harvest additional souls 795 799.

Relations with Other Factions
- Three-Ringed Golden Saber Sect — Neighboring expansionist rival that seeks annexation through spies, secret-realm interference, and open war. Its core forces are destroyed during the elders’ sacrificial counterattack 713 716 755.
- Yang Family of West Thunder Mountain — External enemy that pressures the sect over Yang Wenyan’s death and later attacks in cooperation with the Three-Ringed Golden Saber Sect. Its ancestor is defeated by Ye Tian 625 630 754 767.
- Tianyi Sect — Competes to recruit Ye Tian. Wen Qi threatens him after he rejects its invitation in favor of the Heavenly Sword Sect 560.
- Rogue cultivators of the new secret realm — Occupants who resist the sect’s ownership claim. The elders pursue negotiations and possible recruitment because direct conflict could be disastrous 705 731.
- Corpse God Sect — Enemy in the later account; its Golden Immortal expert Yang Chengtian attacks the sect before Ye Tian intervenes 2087 2099.
