Nature and Properties

Natural Energy is primordial energy generated by the atmosphere, geology, life cycles, and the continued existence of all things. Mountains, rivers, living beings, wind, water, and earth all produce it; without it, the world would collapse. 34 35

• Relation to Chakra — Chakra is produced by combining Physical Energy and Spiritual Power. Natural Energy can be converted into either of those forces, allowing it to indirectly sustain Chakra production. 35
• Relation to souls — A soul is composed of Spiritual Energy. When a soul acts outside the body through techniques such as the Spirit Transformation Technique, its expended Spiritual Power is converted into Natural Energy. 8 35
• Planetary energy — Natural Energy exists independently of Chakra and can transform ordinary native creatures into extraordinary beings. 20
• Observed attributes — The White Snake Sage describes Natural Energy as attribute-less, but Ao perceives it in distinct colors that affect emotion: light blue evokes sadness, gold joy, red anger, and black tension or fear. 34 36
• Danger — It is highly damaging to the body and can assimilate an insufficiently powerful soul, causing the soul to dissipate into the world's Natural Energy. 32 35

Sources and Distribution

There are three major Natural Energy nodes in the world, each occupied by one of the three Great Sacred Lands. Ryūchi Cave became a Sacred Land through the White Snake Sage's presence and its unusually dense Natural Energy. 20

Other locations noted for high Natural Energy concentrations include the Dragon Vein, Jūgo's Sage Transformation Village, the God Tree's former site, Nara Deer Forest, the Forest of Death, Naka Shrine, the Central Mountain Range, the former Uzushiogakure, the Hoshigakure meteorite crater, and the Land of Hot Springs. 20

Cultivation and Sage Art

Conventional Sage Mode

Mount Myōboku's method requires a balanced fusion of Natural Energy, Physical Energy, and Spiritual Energy. It is comparatively gentle, though failure can turn the practitioner to stone. 33 35

Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode

Ryūchi Cave's conventional inheritance begins with the White Snake Sage biting the candidate and injecting her Sage Chakra. The recipient must endure the erosion of her Natural Energy, retain their will, and survive bodily deformation and regeneration. Successful practitioners develop snake-like traits; unsuccessful candidates may be assimilated or die. 33 35

• It can absorb Natural Energy while moving, rather than requiring stationary meditation. 33
• The method demands an exceptionally strong body and carries a high risk of permanent mutation into a snake-human form. 33
• Orochimaru lacked the physical talent to endure this method and instead developed the Cursed Seal as a shortcut for borrowing Natural Energy. 32

Soul-Based Sage Art

The White Snake Sage's alternative method fuses Natural Energy directly with Spiritual Power in a soul state, creating a distinct form of Sage Art without requiring Physical Energy to achieve a 1:1 balance. 33 35

• The practitioner must perceive Natural Energy through the fluctuations created as their projected soul expends Spiritual Power. 35
• A soul with inadequate Spiritual Energy will be assimilated and dispersed, with no opportunity for reincarnation in the Pure Land. 35
• During cultivation, returning the soul to its body before fusion is complete can expel the integrated Natural Energy, causing soul damage, memory loss, death, or complete soul dispersal. 36
• The White Snake Sage's method divides the soul into sections and fuses each section individually, allowing failed portions to be severed to preserve the remaining soul. 36

Known Users and Applications

Sage Soul State

Ao's completed Sage Soul Body is a soul-state application of Natural Energy formed by fusing his soul with the energy of Ryūchi Cave. Its golden, tangible body can act independently of his physical body and shares traits with the White Snake Sage's own existence. 36 37 40

• Natural Energy infused beyond a recipient's tolerance can incapacitate or harm them; Yinqian immediately lost consciousness after receiving a dense sphere of Ao's refined energy. 37
