Background / History

Ao transmigrated into the body of an Uchiha Academy graduate whose predecessor had died during a post–Nine-Tails Incident riot. The Uchiha clan was then under suspicion and political pressure within Konoha, leading Ao to abandon the clan's future and seek Orochimaru as a mentor instead. His fused soul retained the predecessor's memories and attachment to his family. 1 21

He approached Orochimaru with knowledge of biological compatibility, correctly identifying blood-type rejection as a key obstacle in First Hokage Cell implantation. Orochimaru initially suspected him of being a spy, but Ao's experimental insight and willingness to provide value secured him a position as an assistant and disciple. 1 3

Although regarded publicly as an untalented Uchiha with poor Academy performance, Ao concealed his aptitude for research, soul techniques, genjutsu, and later Wood Release. He also worked to support his mother and younger siblings following his father's death. 3 4 5

After Root attacked Orochimaru's facilities, Ao recovered Orochimaru's First Hokage Cell samples and chose to defect from Konoha with his teacher. Before leaving, he entrusted Shisui with a syringe and asked him to protect Ao's family where possible. Ao is intensely rational, ambitious, and focused on uncovering the principles behind bloodlines, souls, Chakra, and Natural Energy. He regards knowledge as more valuable than clan loyalty, choosing Orochimaru's research over the Uchiha clan's political expectations. 7 18

He is highly cautious about irreversible risks. Although willing to gamble with his life, he creates contingencies before doing so, including a soul-possession technique for abandoning a failing body. He also rejects the White Snake Sage's faster, body-altering path to Sage cultivation in favor of a slower method he considers safer. 20 35

Ao can be ruthless when protecting his objectives. He used Wood Release against pursuing Uchiha clansmen without hesitation, killed hostile Yuki clansmen during the Kirigakure operation, and executed an Otogakure subordinate to establish his authority. 28 40 51

Escape from Konoha

Kirigakure Kekkei Genkai Mission

Assigned to collect promising Kekkei Genkai subjects, Ao infiltrates Kirigakure through possession of a Yuki clansman. He rescues selected Yuki survivors, deciphers Ice Release, and kills the Fourth Mizukage Karatachi Yagura at the cost of his temporary body. 31 40 41
