Ch. 101Too soft
Plot points
- Naruto recognizes Jiraiya as his parents’ former teacher and jokes that Kushina warned him to avoid Jiraiya’s example. Their lighthearted conversation turns serious when Jiraiya asks why Naruto wants to leave Konoha. Naruto calls out Jiraiya’s hypocrisy for having left the village himself.
- That night, a Root operative breaks into Naruto’s apartment and triggers Explosive Tags Naruto had planted as a precaution. The ninja escapes badly injured, losing an arm, and the apartment is destroyed.
- Danzo confronts Hiruzen, using the incident to argue that Naruto is a danger to Konoha and should be placed under Root’s control—or eliminated. Hiruzen rejects Danzo’s methods and orders him to stop investigating Naruto, assigning Jiraiya to handle matters concerning him.
- Danzo leaves furious but privately reflects on his lifelong pursuit of the Hokage position and what it would mean if Hiruzen were gone. He also anticipates an event two weeks away and invokes Orochimaru.
- Naruto returns to Konoha, sees the ruined apartment, and feels little attachment: he had already moved his valuables to Inazuma and does not intend to use the home again. Kakashi offers to have it repaired, but Naruto declines.
- At a training ground, Naruto finds Guy, Lee, Tenten, Neji, Hinata, and Hanabi gathered. Hinata admits she came because she heard Naruto would be there. Hanabi asks about Cangxuan, and Naruto jokingly claims he dismantled and burned her, frightening Hanabi.
Character developments and interactions
- Naruto remains determined to leave Konoha and openly challenges Jiraiya’s right to question him. He is wary of surveillance, as shown by the Explosive Tags, and increasingly detached from his former home. He also uses teasing bravado with Hinata and Hanabi.
- Jiraiya shifts from awkward amusement to concern about Naruto’s plans, but cannot answer Naruto’s comparison between his own departure and Jiraiya’s.
- Hiruzen recognizes that Danzo’s aggression could drive Naruto into an open break with the village. Though he agrees Naruto’s abilities merit attention, he insists on restraint and puts Jiraiya in charge.
- Danzo portrays Naruto as an imminent threat and advocates extreme measures. His anger at Hiruzen masks a more conflicted private attachment to becoming Hokage.
- Kakashi tries to reassure Naruto about the damaged apartment, only to learn Naruto has already moved on from it. Hinata’s attraction to Naruto and Hanabi’s concern over Cangxuan provide lighter interpersonal moments.
