Ch. 101Too soft

Plot points

  • Naruto recognizes Jiraiya as his parents’ former teacher and jokes that Kushina warned him to avoid Jiraiya’s example. Their lighthearted conversation turns serious when Jiraiya asks why Naruto wants to leave Konoha. Naruto calls out Jiraiya’s hypocrisy for having left the village himself.
  • That night, a Root operative breaks into Naruto’s apartment and triggers Explosive Tags Naruto had planted as a precaution. The ninja escapes badly injured, losing an arm, and the apartment is destroyed.
  • Danzo confronts Hiruzen, using the incident to argue that Naruto is a danger to Konoha and should be placed under Root’s control—or eliminated. Hiruzen rejects Danzo’s methods and orders him to stop investigating Naruto, assigning Jiraiya to handle matters concerning him.
  • Danzo leaves furious but privately reflects on his lifelong pursuit of the Hokage position and what it would mean if Hiruzen were gone. He also anticipates an event two weeks away and invokes Orochimaru.
  • Naruto returns to Konoha, sees the ruined apartment, and feels little attachment: he had already moved his valuables to Inazuma and does not intend to use the home again. Kakashi offers to have it repaired, but Naruto declines.
  • At a training ground, Naruto finds Guy, Lee, Tenten, Neji, Hinata, and Hanabi gathered. Hinata admits she came because she heard Naruto would be there. Hanabi asks about Cangxuan, and Naruto jokingly claims he dismantled and burned her, frightening Hanabi.

Character developments and interactions

  • Naruto remains determined to leave Konoha and openly challenges Jiraiya’s right to question him. He is wary of surveillance, as shown by the Explosive Tags, and increasingly detached from his former home. He also uses teasing bravado with Hinata and Hanabi.
  • Jiraiya shifts from awkward amusement to concern about Naruto’s plans, but cannot answer Naruto’s comparison between his own departure and Jiraiya’s.
  • Hiruzen recognizes that Danzo’s aggression could drive Naruto into an open break with the village. Though he agrees Naruto’s abilities merit attention, he insists on restraint and puts Jiraiya in charge.
  • Danzo portrays Naruto as an imminent threat and advocates extreme measures. His anger at Hiruzen masks a more conflicted private attachment to becoming Hokage.
  • Kakashi tries to reassure Naruto about the damaged apartment, only to learn Naruto has already moved on from it. Hinata’s attraction to Naruto and Hanabi’s concern over Cangxuan provide lighter interpersonal moments.

Significant themes

  • Trust versus control: Danzo sees Naruto as a weapon or threat to be contained; Hiruzen favors restraint to preserve the relationship.
  • Belonging and departure: Naruto’s refusal to return to his apartment underscores his growing separation from Konoha.
  • Hypocrisy and authority: Naruto challenges Jiraiya’s judgment because Jiraiya himself once left the village.
  • Ambition and uncertainty: Danzo’s reflection suggests that achieving power may not fulfill the desire that has driven him.

Ch. 102Training in the Eight Gates

Key plot points and events

  • Naruto’s attempt to take apart Cangxuan’s Book for firewood—really a response to her chakra-draining indigestion—leads Hanabi to believe he destroyed the puppet. She attacks him in grief, but Cangxuan wakes up unharmed.
  • Once she hears what Naruto supposedly planned, Cangxuan joins the Hyugas in condemning him. Natsu warns that she may report him to the head of the family, while Neji urges Naruto to focus on training.
  • Naruto tries to escape blame by claiming he bullied Hanabi to let Neji vent his anger. Neji angrily chases him, while Hanabi cheers and Hinata worries. Jiraiya and the others watch, surprised and pleased to see Neji acting so freely.
  • The chapter then turns to Naruto’s Eight Gates training. Might Guy explains how to open the gates. Naruto uses thousands of Shadow Clones to test the dangerous technique and absorb their experience when they disappear. After an hour, he opens the first gate and asks to learn the second.

Character developments

  • Naruto is mischievous and quick to shift blame, but also resourceful: he turns Shadow Clone practice into an unusually effective way to learn the Eight Gates.
  • Neji shows more emotion and playfulness than usual, suggesting he is less weighed down by resentment than before.
  • Hanabi moves from distress over Cangxuan’s apparent death to anger at Naruto; Hinata continues to defend Naruto despite the evidence against him.
  • Cangxuan’s Book wakes safely, then enthusiastically joins the accusations against Naruto.
  • Guy is encouraged by Neji’s improved spirits and impressed by Naruto’s training method.

Significant themes

  • Growth through release: Neji’s lively behavior suggests that letting go of old burdens can restore joy.
  • Ingenuity and persistence: Naruto’s repeated experiments—and use of Shadow Clones—let him learn a dangerous skill rapidly.
  • Blame and loyalty: Naruto’s scapegoating of Neji contrasts with Neji’s genuine concern that he train seriously.

Character interactions

  • Naruto’s teasing and attempted blame-shifting provoke Neji, Hanabi, and Cangxuan, while Hinata tries to defend him.
  • Neji’s chase becomes a lighthearted group spectacle, with Hanabi cheering and Hinata fretting.
  • Guy acts as Naruto’s instructor, teaching him the gate-opening technique and then agreeing to teach the second gate.

Ch. 103Evenly matched

Naruto Uzumaki rapidly learned the first five Eight Gates from Might Guy, who left him a scroll before taking Team 3 on a mission. Rock Lee overcame his discouragement about Naruto's talent, while Sasuke prepared to face Zabuza after weeks of training until they were evenly matched.

  • Naruto Uzumaki used his Shadow Clones and rapid recovery to learn the Gate of Healing, the Gate of Life, the Gate of Pain, and the Gate of Limit, and mastered the Strong Fist techniques Might Guy taught him.
  • Might Guy gave Naruto Uzumaki a scroll covering the remaining Eight Gates and left on an urgent mission as Team 3 gathered to depart for the Chunin Ninja Exams.
  • Neji noticed Rock Lee's discouragement over Naruto Uzumaki's progress, and Rock Lee regained his resolve by recalling his goal of proving that a ninja without ninjutsu or Genjutsu could excel.
  • Might Guy joined Rock Lee, Neji, and Tenten in a team fist bump, making sure Tenten was included.
  • Sasuke trained before meeting Zabuza and Haku at an empty training ground, ready to try to defeat Zabuza after becoming evenly matched with him.

Ch. 104Why Are You Shouting So Loud?

Sasuke fought Zabuza and unleashed his Curse Mark, gaining the upper hand before a tremendous roar from Naruto interrupted them. The fighters hurried toward the sound and found Jiraiya yelling at Naruto amid a devastated Training Ground.

  • Sasuke and Zabuza exchanged taijutsu, ninjutsu, and genjutsu, with Zabuza initially gaining the advantage.
  • Sasuke released his Curse Mark, overpowering Zabuza and preparing to take revenge.
  • A mighty roar shook Konoha while the Third Hokage welcomed Mei Terumi at the village gate.
  • Sasuke stopped attacking Zabuza and ran toward the roar, and Zabuza and Haku followed.
  • Jiraiya confronted Naruto at a shattered Training Ground and shouted at him for making such a loud noise while training with Hinata.
