During the first week of classes, Chang Shui Jing understood why the school divided students into Classes A, B, C, and D. Class D truly lived up to its name; the back row was a complete template for underachievers.
Yamauchi and Ike, sitting nearby, were the very picture of slackers, reading novels and playing games. Did the school really recruit people like this? It was truly hard to understand.
From a university perspective, the school's curriculum was incredibly simple. If one studied for twelve hours a day, they could finish an entire semester's worth of material in a month.
Classes were boring, too. I decided to go wander around other classes after school.
Class C was filled with a delinquent vibe; it looked like trouble, so I decided to stay away.
Class B had a pink-haired little angel surrounded by a crowd. The harmonious and joyful atmosphere was mesmerizing; heaven couldn't be much better than this.
After standing there for a while, someone from Class B came over to talk to me.
[Who are you? Which class are you from? Don't stand at the door for too long.]
Kanzaki Ryuji said.
"Relax, classmate. I'm just here to make friends. The atmosphere in your Class B is really nice; it makes me envious. I'm Chang Shui Jing from Class D. And you?"
I offered a polite smile. You can't hit a smiling face, and since the competitive pressure between classes was effectively zero at the start of the term, the chance of being rejected was very low.
"Kanzaki Ryuji." He gave a simple introduction.
Ichinose, the center of the crowd, noticed us and walked over.
"Hello there. I didn't expect to see a handsome guy from Class D here."
The students from Class B followed Ichinose over.
"Let me reintroduce myself. My name is Chang Shui Jing."
"Haha. I'm Ichinose Honami, and this is..."
Ichinose and I chatted back and forth, and we seemed to get along quite well. Behind her, Shiranami Chihiro's expression slowly darkened, and her fists began to clench involuntarily.
I can become very good friends with this little angel over the next three years.
Chang Shui thought to himself.
"Well, it's getting late, Ichinose-san, Kana."
"Kana."
After saying goodbye to Ichinose, I returned to the classroom. Kushida was still pestering Horikita, seemingly wanting to be friends, but Horikita looked completely uninterested.
Whatever, none of my business.
"I am truly beautiful." Koenji repeated this phrase from time to time.
Ugh, this is the downside of sitting behind Koenji.
Soon, a month passed.
"Hey, what's going on? Have your points been deposited?" Yamauchi said loudly.
"Mine haven't. Same here." Ike and Sudo chimed in.
The Three Idiots started making a scene, just as expected.
"How unsightly," Beautiful Guy said.
Just as the red-haired ape was about to lose his temper, the homeroom teacher, Chabashira Sae, walked onto the podium, and everyone immediately returned to their seats.
"Chabashira-sensei, the points for today haven't been deposited. Is there a problem with the system?"
Yamauchi asked.
"Yeah, Sae-chan." Ike addressed the homeroom teacher directly, acting very familiar.
Chabashira revealed a mocking smile on the podium.
"Truly, you are all defective products. You have a total of 86 instances of tardiness or leaving early. You've played on your phones 365 times during class and had 100 unauthorized conversations. It's fortunate you didn't end up with negative points, or you'd never be able to recover in this lifetime. I said it in the first lesson: this is a school that prioritizes ability, and that includes discipline. You have gloriously earned zero points. You are the worst class I have ever taught. The first Class D in history to receive zero points."
After the Three Idiots wailed and complained about the school being unfair, Chabashira ruthlessly moved on to the next segment.
Class A: 940 Class B: 650 Class C: 490 Class D: 0
One class point represents 100 private points issued per month, and so on.
"Old hag, you're insulting me along with them. I've studied all the textbooks this past month."
Chang Shui felt indignant at Chabashira's area-of-effect insult.
"However, this is interesting. Only an Class A like this is worth challenging. Are you ready, pathetic Class A? I am coming to rule over you."
"Rule over what, exactly..." Ayanokoji said.
Crap, I accidentally said that out loud. It's Ayanokoji. He isn't the closest person to me, so why could he hear me clearly? Could he be reading my lips?
A piece of paper was posted on the blackboard again. It listed the names of everyone in the class, and next to each name, a number was recorded.
Chang Shui Jing was ranked third with a score of 90 across the board.
Aside from the top few students, it was clear that most were hovering around the 60-point mark. Setting aside the Red-Haired Ape's unbelievable 20 points, next was Ike's 24 points, which were neck and neck. The average score was roughly 66 points.
"Consider yourselves lucky. If this had been the official midterm exam, six of you would have been expelled shortly after the school year began. Truly terrifying."
Chabashira once again provided a reality check for the entire class.
"Wait, failing leads to expulsion? I've never heard anyone mention that."
The Red-Haired Ape began to complain.
"Did I not mention it? In this school, any official exam with a failing grade results in immediate expulsion. For this exam, anyone who scored below 33 points is to be expelled. Do you understand what I mean?"
Once Chabashira finished speaking, Class D began to boil over, as no one wanted to be expelled right after the school year started.
(You little bitch, you didn't mention it, did you? You did it on purpose. It seems the goal of this school is to set up various obstacles to force students out to achieve a 100% employment rate. Nothing more than that.)
Nagami had already planned for this back in the first chapter.
(The Three Idiots failing and getting expelled? That's great, it's exactly what I wanted. Whether it's sooner or later, they're going to be expelled anyway.)
(But then again, it's not ideal to lose my scapegoats. The more sacrificial pawns I have, the better. Sigh, how boring. I still have to endure this.)
Nagami's left and right brains began to clash, his "fun-seeking" personality and "interest-driven" personality trying to persuade each other.
"We didn't get a single point. From now on, I'll have to eat the vegetable set meal every day."
"I can't even stomach that zero-yen meal..."
"How am I supposed to survive the rest of the month with only 1k points?"
Not long after the teacher left, the classroom was filled with wailing, exuding an air of despair.
(Heh, I intentionally didn't warn the Three Idiots, nor did I warn anyone else. Seeing them break down like this is hilarious. But I can't laugh yet; I have to hold it in.)
"This class is truly hopeless. Why is heaven treating me like this? Why am I in Class D! Damn it! Damn it!"
Yukimura said.
(Hey, hey, kid, you stole my line.) Nagami felt dissatisfied with this.
"Everyone, we must earn points next month. And to achieve that, the whole class must work together. We should remind each other not to be late or chat during class. Using phones is, of course, also prohibited."
Hirata stood at his seat, painting a picture of hope to motivate the class.
"What? Are you ordering me around? That's all unnecessary. If points were going to increase, fine, but changing things now is completely meaningless."
"Yukimura is right. This is indeed a point-deduction system; it won't add points. Unless the school shows mercy and hands out charity, we'll never be able to repay the school's 'kindness' at this rate."
Nagami's words caused the hearts of some to sink completely.
"Ah, so even if we pay attention in class, points won't increase? Then why the hell should I bother following the rules?"
The Red-Haired Ape left his seat and walked out.
Soon, amidst all sorts of gossip, it was time for school to end.
At this moment, the nice guy Hirata walked up to Nagami.
"Nagami, your grades are quite good. If you're up for it, how about we organize a study session together?"
"Horikita's grades are even better, why not call her instead? As for me, my interpersonal skills are zero; it's hard for me to shoulder the heavy responsibility of a study session. Horikita, who is aiming for Class A, surely wouldn't refuse, right?"
For Nagami, a study session would definitely involve interacting with the Three Idiots, which made him feel physically ill. The worst-case scenario would be him beating them all into the Infirmary, so refusing was also for the safety of his classmates.
"I have things to do, Kana."
Hirata failed to keep Nagami, as he had an appointment with someone.
At the back gate of the school, Ichinose was pacing anxiously.
"Sorry to keep you waiting, Ichinose. What is it that you had to say in person?"
"A confession..."
(A confession? It can't be for me. Although I'm very charming, we haven't known each other long, and our communication has been limited to the internet. We're just ordinary friends.)
"I'm about to be confessed to here! It's not appropriate for someone from Class B, so Nagami, could you pretend to be my boyfriend for a day?"
"I see, pretend to be your boyfriend for a day. But I think it's better to clarify things in person."
(What a gentle angel. But if we break up after a day, once word gets out, given the angel's popularity, I'll undoubtedly be branded a scumbag. This is where you're in the wrong, little angel.)
"Eh, Ichinose, who is this?"
Chihiro arrived at the meeting spot and asked, looking confused.
"Chihiro, this is my boy..."
"Just an ordinary friend!"
I interrupted. I didn't expect it to be a girl confessing.
"Ichinose, I understand your desire to protect your friend, but a confession is not an easy thing. Watching the other person's back day after day, wondering if they love you back, being sensitive to every tiny detail about the person you like—when the anxiety in your heart is about to overflow, you summon the courage day after day, deciding you must confess. That 'I like you' is stuck on the tip of your tongue, and you don't know how long you've been waiting. Considering Shiranami's desperate courage, shouldn't you properly respond to her feelings?"
"That is all!"
Chang Shui Jing walked toward the vending machine, ordered a cola, and sat down in a chair to relax. Not long after, Shiranami ran away crying.
Ichinose saw Chang Shui Jing, who had been standing by the vending machine, walking over.
"Thank you, Chang Shui."
"Coffee. Do you want some?"
Chang Shui said.
"I just received your help. This..."
Ichinose wanted to express her apology.
"I've already ordered it."
"Alright, Chang Shui-kun. May I call you Chang Shui-kun from now on?"
"I would be delighted!"
