Emma muttered things along those lines as she found a seat in the front row and took out her textbook to read ahead.
Dark glanced at Emma, who was sitting on the right side of the front row, but his mind was on whether there was a Magic Card that could ease his current predicament.
He wasn't asking for anything that could purge his Demon God Bloodline. He just wanted something that could absorb negative emotions or calm the mind.
Chapter 9: Dark Demon Had Actually Stumbled into a Den of Evil
The professor of Magic Theory was Professor Kazel, a master alchemist with goblin blood!
In an era when Magic Guidance technology was gradually replacing ancient alchemy, Professor Kazel's position was somewhat awkward.
That didn't stop him from being just as proficient in Magic Guidance, though.
Professor Kazel didn't cover anything too profound in the first Magic Theory class. Instead, he introduced the students to some basic facts about Magic Cards.
Magic Cards were divided into five main categories: Spirit Cards, Magic Cards, Item Cards, Field Cards, and Arcana Cards.
Beyond those, there were also God Cards and Mystery Cards!
God Cards were cards that possessed "divine power."
Mystery Cards, on the other hand, referred to "unknown cards"!
In that class, Professor Kazel focused mainly on Spirit Cards.
A Spirit Card was a Magic Card that could summon a Magic Spirit!
Spirit Cards had seven main attributes.
1. True Name: You could only summon a Magic Spirit by calling out its True Name.
2. Level: A Spirit's level was represented by the number of stars. Ordinary Summoning Techniques could summon one- to four-star Spirits; anything above four stars required a special Summoning Technique that involved advancing to a higher level!
3. Species: Spirit Cards came in fifteen species: Human Species, Demi-Human, Dragon, Angel Species, Demon Species, Undead Species, Elemental Species, Fairy Species, Machine Species, Bug Species, Reptile Type, Bird-Beast Species, Plant Species, Fish, and Phantom God Species!
4. Type: Spirit Cards had twenty types: Normal Type, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ice-type, Fighting type, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic type, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, Evil, Steel, Fairy, Light, and Dark!
5. Magic Power: Magic Power was both a Spirit's health and the energy it needed to use its ultimate moves. Once its Magic Power reached zero, the Magic Spirit disappeared and couldn't be summoned again until some time had passed and its Magic Power was full.
6. Attack and Defense: The numerical values showing a Spirit's attack and defense.
7. Ultimate Moves: A Spirit's skills, which consumed Magic Power when used. White Cards had no skills, Blue Cards had one, Purple Cards had two, and Orange Cards had three.
To make his explanation more vivid, Professor Kazel took out a Spirit Card as a demonstration.
Then, in front of the new students, he summoned a giant white serpent wreathed in freezing mist!
The four-star, Ice-type Reptile Species serpent gave the newcomers, who had just arrived and knew no fear, quite a fright!
When Magic Theory ended, the new students rushed out of the classroom as if they'd been set free, heading for the cafeteria in groups of two and three.
For students their age, Magic Theory really was a little dry.
But Dark had listened attentively!
In fact, before class had even ended, he'd already seen the prompt [Greed +1]!
Then he realized something.
Greed was an intense longing that came from deep within, beyond what was ordinary!
His "desire to ease his current predicament" had been counted as "Greed"!
Even though he'd made sure to let his mind wander at intervals during class, that hadn't helped!
This completely overturned his theory about daydreaming in class.
Still, he'd learned a few things in that lesson.
The number of Magic Cards—and especially the variety of species and types of Magic Spirit Cards—was beyond anything he'd imagined!
Angel Species and Phantom God Species both possessed divine power!
"I've heard Phantom God Species are exclusive to God Cards, and there are only a few of those in the entire world. But Angel Species are merely a rare species. If I could get my hands on one or two Angel Species Magic Spirit Cards..."
Using divine power to counter the power of a Demon God was common sense in any world.
Dark thought he might have found a lead.
But Professor Kazel had made it very clear: at Saint Marian Academy, both students and faculty could only use Magic Cards they had made themselves.
In other words,
if he wanted to purify himself with an Angel Species Spirit Card, he'd have to make one himself.
That was far too difficult!
With a trace of worry, Dark went to the cafeteria and had a simple but satisfying lunch. Then he returned to his room, planning to take a short nap to recharge before the afternoon's Magic Potion Class!
Since Diana had made a friend in Rose, she hadn't come to pester him, which was a relief.
But after only half an hour, he suddenly felt a pang in his chest and jolted awake.
A [Sloth +1] prompt quietly appeared.
"Damn it!"
[Wrath +1]
"So I can't even take a nap?"
Dark glanced at the clock again and couldn't help smiling ruefully. "Looks like I'll have to set an alarm for naps from now on. No longer than half an hour! No sleeping past six in the morning, and no naps longer than half an hour... What am I, some model young man?"
Dark called up the system and looked at the Sin Index.

The general trend was upward.
Especially the Wrath index!
Wrath was the most volatile of the Seven Deadly Sins. Once his anger faded, the index would drop a little.
Even so, it was still two points higher than before.
That wasn't a good sign.
Dark simply got up, packed his Magic Potion textbook into his schoolbag, and headed to the common room to read for a while.
At first, he'd planned to look up information about DemiDevimon in the library so he could finish the assignment for Summoning Class.
But with only a little over an hour before the afternoon class, he decided to wait until after Magic Potion Class to go to the library.
For all he knew, the Magic Potion professor might assign homework that required research, too.
"Wait, what if I spend ages looking things up and still can't find what I need, but I really want to finish the assignment and keep searching... Could the Greed index explode?"
"Surely not..."
With a faint sense of unease, Dark headed to his third class of the day.
Since he'd read through the material in moderation beforehand, he performed just as well in this third class.
Professor Thompson of Magic Potion Class wasn't the Snape type, either. She not only praised him but also gave him extra credit.
Making Magic Cards required Magic Potion, so there was no room for carelessness!
But Professor Thompson didn't mention any Magic Potions that caught his interest, so his Greed index wasn't triggered.
After those three classes,
both the professors and the students looked at him differently.
Dark tried to limit his interactions with his classmates and headed to the library as soon as class ended.
The library was run by Mrs. Bella, a somewhat plump woman. But the day-to-day librarian was an upper-year student.
That upper-year student with long, straight black hair was exactly Dark's type. He didn't dare look at her for long; after signing in, he hurried into the library.
"What a cute new student."
Pandora watched the handsome, "shy" little boy and couldn't help covering her mouth as she giggled.
Little did she know, Dark was crouched behind a bookshelf, clutching his heart and gasping for breath.
The [Bliss +1] prompt had made him decide the library was a den of evil!
After him, Emma Metis also entered the library.
Chapter 10: Dark Demon Scoffed at the Trap
"Is there a floor plan of the library?"
Dark took out his Sorting Card and infused it with Magic Power.
The Sorting Card sensed what he wanted and displayed a floor plan of the library on its surface.
Saint Marian Academy's library had only one floor, but every bookshelf was terrifyingly tall.
The academy used physical barriers to keep its most profound books on the highest shelves.
Without the ability to fly, there was no way to reach them.
But Dark's Familiar had wings—that was an advantage!
Although Familiars were supposed to replace "owls," most students' Familiars didn't have wings and couldn't fly. How awkward.
Dark found the area marked "Familiars" on the library map and immediately headed over.
The difference between Familiars and ordinary Magic Spirits was that Familiars could remain outside their Magic Cards for long periods without consuming their owner's Magic Power.
Magic Spirits were different. No matter how powerful a Magic Spirit was, its time in the world was limited.
Once that time ran out, it would start consuming its own Magic Power. When its Magic Power reached zero, it would disappear.
Furthermore, Magic Spirits had an intelligence level of 2, half a level lower than Familiars. That put them on the level of inferior Golems.
The library was enormous. Even with the map, it took Dark nearly ten minutes to find the bookshelf labeled "Familiars."
The entire bookshelf was filled with materials related to Familiars!
"Do I have to find what I need on my own from here?"
Dark couldn't help looking up.
The bookshelf stretched beyond sight.
He was even tempted to call it "soaring into the clouds"!
There had to be countless books on this single bookshelf alone!
"How am I supposed to find anything? Do I have to go back and ask the librarian?"
"Damn, even doing an assignment means risking an index increase?"
Dark wasn't about to accept that!
