Classification and Card Data
Magic Spirits are summoned by Spirit Cards, one of the five principal categories of Magic Cards alongside Magic Cards, Item Cards, Field Cards, and Arcana Cards. God Cards and Mystery Cards exist outside those five standard categories. 7
Core Parameters
| Parameter | Function |
|---|---|
| True Name | Must be called to summon the Magic Spirit. 7 |
| Level | Represented by stars; ordinary summoning techniques handle one- to four-star Magic Spirits, while higher-star spirits require special promotion summoning methods. 7 |
| Race | Determines the Spirit Card's species classification. 7 |
| Attribute | Determines elemental/type affinity; matching a Spirit's attribute to an Ultimate Move strengthens that move. 286 |
| Magic Power | Functions as both the Magic Spirit's life force and the energy consumed by Ultimate Moves. 7 |
| Attack / Defense | Numerical measures of offensive and defensive capability. 7 |
| Ultimate Moves | The Magic Spirit's special skills; activating them consumes Magic Power. 7 |
Races and Attributes
Spirit Cards recognize fifteen standard races: Human, Demi-human, Dragon, Angel, Demon, Undead, Elemental, Fairy, Mechanical, Insect, Reptilian, Avian/Beast, Plant, Fish, and Phantom God. 7
They also use twenty attributes: Normal, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, Dark, Steel, Fairy, Light, and Shadow. 7
- Race classifications do not necessarily indicate that a Magic Spirit is a genuine member of that people or species; Human Species Magic Spirits, for example, are not true humans. 111
- A Magic Spirit's race usually reflects its primary inclination, though rare dual-race cases exist. 1159
- Star rating establishes a Spirit's basic scale, but its Ultimate Moves, attribute synergy, intelligence, and the Magister's tactics can matter more than raw statistics. 415 552
Creation, Summoning, and Persistence
Creation and Refinement
Magic Spirits are cultivated through the refinement of Spirit Cards. Spirit Honey Nectar provides a Magic Card with the basis for cultivating a pseudo-lifeform, while transmutation circles and core materials determine the final result. 18
A young Magister's first Spirit Card is often a Magic Phantom Beast. Its form is fixed by the creator's perception and expectations at the moment of creation, making it a highly personal starting companion. 17
- A Magic Phantom Beast uses a transparent hair from a real Magic Phantom Beast as its core material and the No. 1 Transmutation Circle as its core array. 18
- Standard Magic Phantom Beasts are one-star commemorative spirits with low baseline statistics, but exceptional cases can develop beyond those limits. 19
- Refinement can produce Magic Spirits with no known fixed formula, such as the unusually durable Shuckle. 55
- Targeted refinement, Great Sin Cards, divine materials, and specialized rituals can create or alter Magic Spirits far beyond ordinary classroom products. 666 1225 2552
Summoning and Duration
A summoned Magic Spirit initially draws power from its Magister's Summoning Technique. Once that support expires, it consumes its own Magic Power; at zero Magic Power, it disappears and cannot be summoned again until replenished. 7 20
- A one-star Magic Spirit consumes roughly one point of Magic Power per second after relying on its own reserves. 20
- Magic Power is also spent on Ultimate Moves, making endurance a central limitation in prolonged combat. 7 53
- Magic Spirits are not truly immortal. A Spirit whose Magic Power is depleted or whose card is damaged requires recovery before it can return to battle. 371 898
- Field Cards such as Paradise can greatly improve persistence by restoring Magic Power and reducing summon times for registered Magic Spirits. 151 663
Intelligence, Sentience, and Bonds
Ordinary Magic Spirits have an intelligence level of roughly 2.0, below the approximate 2.5 level of a Familiar. A sentient Magic Spirit capable of complete thought and learning is rated at 3.0 or above. 7 2516
- Intelligence allows Magic Spirits to display initiative, emotion, personality, communication, and independent decision-making. 151 552
- Greater intelligence is not purely advantageous: fear, arrogance, nervousness, and other emotions can impair combat performance. 552
- Great Sin Cards can awaken a Magic Spirit's intelligence and may also alter its personality or unlock additional potential. 666 868 895
- Dark Dimon's emotion-series and Great Sin Cards are particularly notable for granting intelligence to Magic Spirits, including seven of Alvitr's spirits in one experiment. 552
- Intelligence does not automatically equal true life; named and intelligent Magic Spirits can still remain imitations rather than genuine individuals. 2030
Mind Bonds
A bond between a Magister and a Magic Spirit is the foundation of Mind Summoning. It enables communication, lowers summoning cost and time, and can allow a Spirit to respond to its Magister beyond ordinary commands. 17
- Deep bonds can let a Magic Spirit emerge from its card on its own or even trigger a form of self-summoning. 350
- Intelligence above 3.0, an innate self-manifestation ability, or a sufficiently deep bond can enable autonomous manifestation. 350
- Mind Magicians can use their bond to resist mental control imposed on their Magic Spirits. 1881
- Diana's bond with Bear Spirit was strong enough to break brainwashing, demonstrating the combat value of genuine mutual trust. 102
Development and Evolution
Magic Spirits can evolve, gain stars, change forms, or acquire new Ultimate Moves through battle, transmutation, Great Sin Cards, Fusion, and other specialized effects. Such changes depend on the individual Spirit's inherent potential rather than a universal evolution ability. 666 1161
- Eevee began as a one-star Magic Phantom Beast but repeatedly evolved into forms such as Umbreon, Espeon, and other Magic Beast variants. 53 1170 1232
- Misdreavus evolved into the five-star Mismagius, gaining Fear Gem, Pain Split, Destiny Bond, and Nightmare Space. 348
- Magic Beast: Goddess of the Mind's Eye gained intelligence through Pride IV, advancing from a Purple Card to a Gold Card and gaining Mind's Eye and Eye of God. 895 1385
- Magic Beast: God of Destruction gained Doom Declaration and Lost Prophecy after awakening, allowing it to declare a target's death and locate distant targets through prophecy. 913 914 1416
- The distinction between a temporary enhancement and a true evolution is significant; Great Sin Cards often enhance traits already latent within the target rather than granting an arbitrary evolution. 666
True Life Research
Magic Spirits are normally treated as pseudo-lifeforms, yet they may be recognized as independent living entities by certain divine mechanisms. When Aurora vanished through divine means, her Magic Spirits were left behind rather than taken with her. 1415
Dark's later research sought to convert Magic Spirits into genuine lifeforms.
- DemiDevimon and Eevee became Dark's first successful subjects in experiments to transform Magic Spirits into true life. 2431
- Once transformed, a Magic Spirit's life and Magic Power become separate: Magic Power is no longer its sole life force, substantially improving its vitality. 2408
- Magic Spirit life creation requires careful handling of intelligence and consciousness, since intelligent Magic Spirits already possess a form of consciousness that must survive the transformation process. 2382
- The prospect of granting sentience to named Magic Spirits raises ethical concerns, particularly where a Spirit resembles an existing person. 2030
History
Merlin revolutionized warfare by refining knowledge, Magic Power, imagination, and Magic Potion into Magitech Cards, enabling Magisters to create powerful cards and eventually overcome the Demon Race. 3
The deeper origin of magitech remains uncertain. The continued use of Merlin's No. 1 Transmutation Array and its apparent connection to the Divine Path have led Dark to question whether magitech's foundations may predate Merlin or originate from another world. 2552 2586
