Background / History
Shiki served as an executive of the Rocks Pirates and was already recognized as an elite swordsman before Luo Tian joined the crew. He took a particular interest in Luo Tian's potential, inviting him aboard to spar and refine their swordsmanship together. Their month of training developed into a competitive friendship, though Shiki's pride was repeatedly challenged by Luo Tian's rapid ability to imitate and improve upon his techniques. 6 9 10
During the raid on the Heavenly Tribute, Shiki led ships through the Marine lines and battled Zephyr in the air. After Garp intercepted and badly injured him while he approached the treasure ship, Shiki ultimately succeeded in lifting the Heavenly Tribute transport into the sky with the Float-Float Fruit, enabling the Rocks Pirates' retreat. His contribution earned him a Devil Fruit and an additional Great Grade sword from the spoils. 20 22 25 32
After the raid, Shiki offered Luo Tian the future position of vice-captain in the pirate crew he intended to establish. Luo Tian refused permanent recruitment, prompting Shiki to challenge him to a formal duel. Their fight escalated from swordsmanship and Conqueror's Haki into large-scale Devil Fruit combat; Luo Tian defeated Shiki by exploiting an opening with teleportation and Shinra Tensei. Shiki honored the agreement and stopped pursuing Luo Tian's recruitment. 33 34 35 36 38
At Mary Geoise and later God Valley, Shiki continued acting as one of Rocks' foremost combatants. He targeted Saint Mars during the Mary Geoise invasion, helped delay Imu's forces during the retreat, and joined the competing Rocks executives attempting to rescue Shakky at God Valley. After the Rocks Pirates collapsed, he used wealth taken from God Valley to establish the Flying Pirate Crew, eventually commanding more than fifty ships and controlling over a dozen islands. 68 73 80 85 103
Appearance
Shiki is identified by his long golden hair, golden eyes, and imposing airborne presence. He habitually fights while suspended in the air, wielding a sword in each hand. 34 68
- Long, mane-like golden hair. 20 104
- Golden eyes. 34
- Fights with the twin blades Oto and Kogarashi. 20 35
- Severed his own legs to escape Impel Down's Level 6. 165
Personality
Shiki is flamboyant, arrogant, and intensely competitive. He treats powerful opponents as sources of excitement, eagerly challenging Zephyr, the returning Marine admirals, and Luo Tian rather than avoiding them. Even after being overwhelmed by Garp and Sengoku at Marineford, he responded with greater enthusiasm rather than surrendering. 20 33 34 142
His ambition centers on building a powerful fleet and gathering exceptional people beneath him. He repeatedly attempted to recruit Luo Tian and later tried to recruit Nami after witnessing her ability to navigate an air current his own navigator failed to anticipate. His admiration for talent is tempered by ruthlessness: he states that he executed that navigator. 33 34 217
Treasure and Devil Fruits strongly motivate Shiki. He readily joined Luo Tian's operation against the Celestial Dragons because of the prospect of another God Valley-scale haul, and he valued the Griffin Fruit as a means to create another powerful officer for his crew. 103 112
