Background / History

Vinard was born on Emerald Ring Star, a world whose civilization pursued the union of technology and aesthetics. Gifted in complex systems from childhood, he sought an answer to an unsolvable problem and made an exchange with the King of Absurdity: he gained cold, exceptionally efficient creativity at the price of his emotional roots and sense of belonging. He rose from a newly advanced Dark Sun Rank wizard to Archwizard within roughly a century, but became unable to feel at home anywhere—including on his original world. 513 573

Before specializing, Vinard pursued the Ancient Alchemists' ideal of Tri-Phase Unity—the fusion of Potions, alchemy, and Runic Studies. His inability to progress in Potionology and Bloodline Modulation eventually forced him to focus on alchemical constructs and systems engineering instead. 395

He created Emerald Ring II as both an industrial-colonial project and a substitute for the homeland he could no longer emotionally return to. Its near side, Slag Heart, is a hazardous industrial zone; its far side is an ecological colony sustained by the Crystal Tree. Vinard links the two through an underground teleportation network and uses the Starforge Titan to mine, purify, transport, and deter intruders. 527

Appearance

Vinard's Void Shell projection is a meticulously ordered metallic construction that has abandoned ordinary human features. His body is silver-gray and covered in rune circuits, while his eyes appear as pupil-less silver spheres of light. 395 401

  • Angular metal face with little remaining human likeness. 395
  • Dense rune circuits engraved across his mechanical body. 401
  • Triangular blue crystal embedded in his forehead, serving as a core computing unit. 401
  • Mechanical tentacles and arms used for calculation, alchemical work, and equipment control. 401 403

Personality

Vinard is precise, pragmatic, and openly transactional. He values punctuality, competence, technical results, and clearly defined compensation; his first lessons for Ron are explicitly priced rather than offered as favors. 402 521

He is harsh toward inefficiency and rigid thinking, but he respects genuine insight regardless of rank. Ron's unconventional ideas repeatedly earn Vinard's approval because they solve problems his established systems cannot. 524 526 565

His pursuit of absolute order is also his central weakness. Vinard recognizes that his systems lack spontaneity, spirituality, and “accident,” leading him to value Ron's Resonance Method as a source of vitality for his otherwise perfect structures. 543 567

Abilities & Skills

Archwizard Void Shell

Vinard possesses an Archwizard-level mechanical Void Shell, allowing him to project himself remotely, perform immense calculations, and operate complex systems through his constructed body. 395 401

  • Projects a partially materialized metallic body for research and communication. 401
  • Uses a core computing unit and rune circuits for high-speed analysis. 401 525
  • Can manifest the Heart of All Machines during Void Shell contests. 710
  • Possesses perception sufficient to judge the deteriorating state of another Archwizard's Void Shell. 523

Alchemy and Construct Engineering

Vinard is regarded as an unmatched authority in alchemy, particularly alchemical constructs, spatial folding, elemental aggregation, and material transformation. 394 497

  • Performs atomic-level alchemical operations with specialized laboratory equipment. 401
  • Reconstructs and fuses high-level alchemical items, including the Eye of Time Knowledge. 401 403
  • Designs autonomous support intelligences, industrial equipment, and complex magical machinery. 402
  • Treats alchemy as the power to transform resources, worlds, and civilizations rather than merely manufacture objects. 402

Starforge Titan

The Starforge Titan is Vinard's colossal alchemical masterpiece: a construct capable of mining asteroids, refining resources, eliminating parasitic organisms, and reshaping matter on a planetary scale. 402

  • Uses dozens of auxiliary intelligences and an extremely costly energy core. 402
  • Extracts rare metals, Energy Crystals, and Active Metal from celestial bodies. 402
  • Serves as a strategic deterrent and as a buffer between Emerald Ring II's industrial and ecological regions. 527
  • Requires dangerous maintenance due to contamination, corrosive deposits, radiation, and parasitic otherworldly creatures accumulating on its soles. 521

Soul Refinement and Resentment Research

Vinard studies resentment, souls, necromancy, and the conversion of emotional contamination into usable energy. He considers prohibitions on necromancy to be political controls rather than purely ethical safeguards. 526

  • Created and operates the Resentment Refiner, which extracts Soul Energy from resentment-contaminated material. 526
  • Developed technologies involving Resentment Gold, Grudge Crystals, emotional-energy storage, and negative-emotion-guiding force fields. 526 578
  • Learns from Ron's “Soul Symphony” theory that artistic and musical perspectives can reveal structures his engineering approach overlooks. 526 527

Equipment / Creations

  • Starforge Titan — Planetary-scale alchemical construct used for mining, refinement, purification, transportation, and deterrence. 402 527
  • Resentment Refiner — Necromantic device for extracting and processing Soul Energy from resentment. 526
  • Iron Wrench Emblem — Communication emblem Vinard gives Ron, later used to contact him across great distances. 395 521
  • Mana Pool — A Three-Dimensional Mana Field installation at Emerald Ring II that provides high-grade cultivation resources. 528 568
  • Mechanical maintenance puppets — Alchemical golems used to supervise work, relay Vinard's instructions, and assess technical performance. 523

Relationships

  • Ron Ralph — Initially a review-panel subject, then an alchemical collaborator, student, project developer, and valued strategic partner. Vinard recognizes Ron as an unusual talent capable of providing the “soul” his systems lack. 395 401 524 543
  • Professor Uter — A respected friend and fellow senior who recommended Ron to Vinard. Vinard honors Uter's final request and shares Ron's grief after Uter's death. 395 521 570
  • Alistair Renard — Vinard's proud student and Emerald Ring II's chief technical officer. Alistair inherits Vinard's rigor but is criticized for his rigid thinking. 529 565
  • Ella — Administrator responsible for Emerald Ring II's ecological balance and civil affairs; Vinard entrusts her with the classified Silent Spore mission. 529 580
  • Cedric Morwen — Former student whose research philosophy diverged sharply from Vinard's. Vinard considers Cedric dangerous and later asks Ron to give him another chance. 497 525 667
  • Cassandra — A rival Archwizard whose Cognitive Virus project and expansionist methods Vinard openly distrusts. Both seek Ron's cooperation for different strategic purposes. 509 525 543
  • King of Absurdity — The being whose bargain granted Vinard extraordinary rationality while taking his sense of belonging; Vinard retains resentment toward him and his methods. 525 573
  • Antico von Astra — An elder supporter who aided Vinard during his early years, in a relationship described as close to that of senior and junior. 708

Story Role / Major Arcs

Simulation Device Review

Vinard joins Ron's review panel as an initially dismissive Archwizard. Ron's command of simulation-device research earns Vinard's attention, funding, and an Iron Wrench Emblem for direct contact. 395

Eye of Time Knowledge Fusion

Vinard collaborates with Ron to fuse the Eye of True Knowledge and Eye of Time. Impressed by Ron's precision and insight, he offers formal discipleship; Ron declines due to his existing bond with Mrs. Allen, but agrees to become Vinard's ordinary student for practical training. 401 403

Furnace Star Project

After testing Ron through the Starforge Titan maintenance assignment, Vinard invites him to become a Furnace Star Project Developer. He reveals Slag Heart, Emerald Ring II, and his long-term plan to transform Furnace Star through industrial, ecological, and civilizational engineering. 521 524 527

Emerald Ring II Teaching Program

Vinard hires Ron to teach mixed-blood apprentices whose talents exceed Vinard's own specialties in Potionology, Bloodline Modulation, astrology, and history. He also regards Ron as an experimental observation subject due to Ron's dual Blessings. 527 528

Resentment Mine Research

Vinard supports Ron's unorthodox Ordered Conversion Plan for resentment contamination, publicly rebuking experts who reject it because it lacks conventional precedent. Ron's eventual success leads Vinard to treat him as an indispensable collaborator rather than a subordinate. 565 567

Ron's Departure

Despite Ron's strategic importance to the colony, Vinard allows his contract to expire and retains him only as a remote strategic consultant. The decision shocks Alistair, who considers Ron essential to the colony's future projects. 579 580

Archwizard Gathering

At Antico's gathering, Vinard competes with Ron through mechanical constructs and Void Shell principles. The encounter forces Vinard to confront the limits of pure specialization when Ron's harmonization grants a mechanical doll genuine spirituality. 709 710

Notable Quotes
