Background / History

Class D is one of the four freshman classes at Advanced Nurturing High School, populated entirely by students who possess strong abilities but also severe personal flaws, leading the school administration and upperclassmen to label them "defective products" 7 10 22. From the very beginning of the school year, the class struggles heavily with discipline, internal division, and academics, resulting in a continuous accumulation of lateness, absences, and rule violations that drain all 1,000 of their starting class points down to zero within the first month 21 22.

The class dynamic is heavily fractured, with students operating in isolated cliques and frequently arguing rather than uniting 15 25 46. Although moderate students like Hirata Yousuke attempt to maintain peace and act as mediators, and figures like Horikita Suzune strive to find patterns in point deductions and organize study groups, the class remains plagued by internal conflict, delinquent uprisings, and severe academic underperformance 22 25 37 46. Following a harsh midterm examination, several students—including Sudo Ken, Yamauchi Haruki, and Ike Kanji—face immediate expulsion due to failing scores and a trap involving a flawed answer key 45 46. Despite frantic efforts by Hirata to gather emergency points from classmates, the class's deep divisions and lack of unified support prevent them from fully rescuing everyone, culminating in the actual dropping out of Ike Kanji 47 60.
