Background / History

Hiyori met Hikigaya Hachiman on the bus to Advanced Nurturing High School. Their shared enthusiasm for Conan Doyle's works quickly gave them common ground; while Hachiman read a Japanese edition of A Study in Scarlet, Hiyori carried the original English edition of The Sign of Four. 1

After enrollment, Hiyori—then a Class C student—crossed classes to invite Hachiman to buy daily necessities with her. Her classmates did not get along with her, so she chose Hachiman because of their similar interests, unintentionally causing their outing to be mistaken for a date. 3

Ryuuen Kakeru later ordered Hachiman to stop associating with Hiyori, considering her friendships with students from other classes a risk to his control of Class C.
