Background / History
Hachiman enrolls at Advanced Nurturing High School seeking a quiet life detached from the social failures of middle school. On the bus to school, he meets Shiina Hiyori through their shared interest in Conan Doyle and reading; their easy conversation contrasts sharply with the contempt he expects from others. 1 2
Although his aptitude makes him a potential Class A candidate, the school places him in Class D because he shows little concern for others and lacks meaningful communication with peers. He initially interacts more with students from other classes than with his own classmates. 13
He quickly distrusts the school’s 100,000-point monthly allowance and deduces that student behavior and performance likely affect point income. He sets an individual goal of collecting twenty million private points to reach Class A, then builds wealth through club betting, examination rewards, negotiations, and punitive deals. 4 18 19 29
Arisu Sakayanagi takes an interest in him after exposing his false name and recognizing that he can lie naturally. Their rivalry develops through chess, where Hachiman begins serious study after losing to her and later becomes one of the school’s strongest players. 4 7 245
During his first year, Hachiman increasingly involves himself in Class A’s internal conflict at Arisu’s request. He engineers a vote that isolates the Katsuragi Faction, extracting 2.56 million private points from its sixteen members while weakening the faction’s influence. 49 51
His relationship with Hiyori, Arisu, and Kamuro Masumi gradually becomes central to his life. By the sports festival, he publicly identifies all three as his important people; they later become his girlfriends. 113 114 169
Appearance
Hachiman is most readily identified by his consistently lifeless, “dead fish” eyes and an ordinarily expressionless face. As his training progresses, he develops a noticeably stronger physique and broad back. 15 89 242
- Lifeless gaze frequently compared to dead fish eyes. 15
- Usually maintains an unreadable, expressionless demeanor. 242
- Gains substantial physical strength through self-defense, gym training, and daily training with Ayanokoji. 113 263
- Has a broad back, according to Hiyori. 89
Personality
Hachiman begins school deeply guarded by his middle-school humiliation. He avoids class socialization, expects friendly people to conceal ulterior motives, and would rather stay detached than become involved in problems he considers pointless. 2 13 80
He is pragmatic, highly self-interested, and comfortable exploiting resentment or weakness when it serves his aims. However, he deliberately operates within school rules, preferring contracts, information, point transactions, and social pressure over overt rule-breaking. 216 252 284
His indifference has clear limits. Hiyori and Arisu are initially the only people he explicitly prioritizes above himself, and he reacts decisively when either is threatened or insulted. He later extends that concern to Masumi and accepts their mutual affection rather than retreating from it. 46 98 114
His attitude shifts from seeking peace to actively pursuing strength. Rather than fearing superior opponents, he treats them as opportunities to improve, displaying extreme persistence even when physically outmatched. 263 274
Abilities & Skills
Strategic Manipulation
Hachiman excels at forcing opponents into unfavorable choices while preserving plausible legality.
- Presented Class A with punishment options designed to make the Katsuragi Faction the politically acceptable target. 51
- Exposed Kushida’s collusion with Ryuen through the school forum while concealing his own involvement. 140
- Recruited eight potential spies from Class C by exploiting dissatisfaction with Ichinose’s leadership. 230
- Uses threats, alliances, and private points to create leverage rather than relying on direct coercion. 132 156
Psychological Insight
School staff identify Hachiman’s insight into others’ psychology and essence as exceptional. 13
- Reads Sakayanagi’s eye movements to predict chess moves despite initially being only an intermediate player. 7
- Correctly deduces the VIP pattern during the cruise-ship special exam and wins 500,000 private points from Ryuen through a bet. 76
- Identifies vulnerable students and class divisions that can be exploited in negotiations. 216 230
- His emotional detachment and poor concern for classmates limit his cooperativeness. 13 113
Private-Point Acquisition and Negotiation
Hachiman treats private points as both personal capital and a strategic weapon.
- Earns points through club betting matches and spends 500,000 points to prevent Hiyori’s expulsion. 18
- Negotiates academic rewards worth up to 200,000 points for top examination performance. 29
- Extracts millions of points from the Katsuragi Faction through a punishment settlement. 51
- Purchases a large room for himself and his three girlfriends. 113
- Is widely known for demanding compensation before offering help. 140 216
Chess
Hachiman develops chess from an interest sparked by Sakayanagi into a high-level competitive skill.
- Studies chess seriously after losing his first game against Sakayanagi. 7
- Defeats Horikita while holding back, using deliberately meaningless-looking moves to pressure her into time trouble and positional mistakes. 242
- Defeats Hashimoto in the interclass chess event by rejecting Ayanokoji’s tampered instruction and moving his rook to b2. 245 249
- Is selected as Class D’s chess representative because few classmates can match his skill. 244
Academic Ability
Hachiman improves from above-average performance into one of the grade’s leading academic students.
- Raises his academic assessment from B- at enrollment to A by September of his first year. 113

- Raises his physical rating from C- at enrollment to B+ by September. 113
- Records 55.3 kilograms in grip strength during sports-festival testing, placing third in his class at the time. 96
- Takes first place in every event he enters at the sports festival. 106
- Trains daily with Ayanokoji to continue increasing his strength. 263
- Endures Amasawa’s overwhelming assault long enough to land a decisive strike. 274
- Easily defeats Sudo in their later match. 282
