Background / History

Tom Riddle discovered that he was descended from Salazar Slytherin through the Gaunt family, but learned that his biological father was an ordinary Muggle and that he had been conceived through a love potion. Enraged, he murdered his father and paternal grandparents, altered Morfin Gaunt's memories to frame him, and took the Gaunt family ring. 104

While still at Hogwarts, Tom gathered followers and began using the name “Voldemort.” He obtained information about Horcruxes from a Potions professor through flattery, having already created one and seeking confirmation that more could be made. His lifelong goal became perfect, eternal existence. 104

After leaving Hogwarts, Voldemort murdered repeatedly to create additional Horcruxes, acquired founder relics through deception and murder, and expanded his command of Dark magic. Dumbledore twice refused his application to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts; after the second rejection, Voldemort hid Ravenclaw's Diadem in the Room of Requirement and cursed the position. 104 105

Appearance

Voldemort's appearance changes with his bodily condition, possession, and the timeline in which he appears. His later form bears little resemblance to his student self. 105

He later possesses Quirrell and confronts Harry beneath Hogwarts. After torturing Hermione with the Cruciatus Curse, he is struck through the chest by Harry using Quirrell's wand and the Unicorn Blessing; his control over Quirrell is destroyed. 49

In an altered future where Voldemort conquers Britain, he obtains the Deathly Hallows and becomes markedly more dangerous. He can sense the Hallows, curve spells cast through the Elder Wand, animate magically capable dead servants through the Resurrection Stone, and use the Invisibility Cloak for true disappearance. 360 361 362

His campaign against the Muggle government ends disastrously when a sniper rifle destroys his body during an attack on Buckingham Palace, forcing him to return again as a disembodied soul. This defeat drives him to create further Horcruxes and seek mastery over Death. 362

Godric's Hollow

During a time-travel intervention on October 31, 1981, Voldemort accepts Delphi as his future daughter and attacks the Potters' home. He kills the time-traveling Harry with the Killing Curse, believing he has won. 380

Harry survives because he is a Horcrux, and Voldemort's curse rebounds upon him. Voldemort is killed, while Delphi is erased as the altered future collapses. 381
