Class Standing

The school ranks classes from A to D by class points, with Class D occupying the lowest position in the first-year rankings shown. Its students began the year with knowledge of key school rules, but still finished their first month far behind the other classes. 4 22

Background

Class D is introduced through Kikyo Kushida, who identifies herself as a member while meeting An Xiao on the first day of school. 2 An Xiao later encounters an upperclassman from Class D, whose lack of points helps expose the school's class competition, point-based privileges, and threat of expulsion. 6

Among the first-year classes, Class D develops a reputation for disorder. An Xiao observes students ignoring lessons, reading manga during class, and generally acting independently of class rules. 15 Suzune Horikita, a Class D student who learns the school's rules early, becomes increasingly frustrated by classmates who dismiss the consequences of their behavior. 20 22

When the first monthly results are announced, the class erupts into mutual blame. Hirata and Kushida attempt to mediate, but disputes over rule-breaking and inappropriate rankings made by students prevent them from restoring order. 22 Chabashira harshly attributes the class's position to the standards by which its members were originally assigned. 23

Academic Recovery

Class D's midterm preparations are strained by students such as Ken Sudo, Haruki Yamauchi, and Kanji Ike resisting study sessions or disrupting them. Kushida, An Xiao, and Honami Ichinose work to keep Sudo participating, while An Xiao searches for prior examination papers. 24 25

Kiyotaka Ayanokoji and Kushida eventually purchase An Xiao's past exam papers for 50,000 points to help Class D prepare. 32 The papers closely resemble the eventual examinations, and Class D subsequently achieves a full pass rate in the midterms. 29 34

Sae Chabashira is alleged by Arisu Sakayanagi to have withheld a change to the exam scope from her own class; Sakayanagi considers this an additional safeguard against Class D improving. 30
