Background / History
Kujo Makoto recognizes Ayanokoji as the protagonist of the original story and identifies him as an exceptionally gifted product of the White Room. At the beginning of the school year, however, Ayanokoji wants only to live as an ordinary student and avoid drawing attention to himself. 7 9
Ayanokoji's first friend at Advanced Nurturing High School is Kujo. Their cafeteria conversation begins with ordinary topics—food, clubs, school rumors, and private points—but Kujo's viewpoint on graduating from Class A leaves Ayanokoji deeply affected. They exchange contact information afterward. 8
Appearance
Ayanokoji is consistently described as expressionless or poker-faced, often appearing detached even in tense or unfamiliar social situations. 9 22 43
- Usually maintains a flat, unreadable demeanor. 9 39
- His controlled expression makes it difficult for others, including Horikita Manabu, to read his emotions. 17
- His hidden athletic ability becomes apparent during his extended tennis match with Kujo. 22
Personality
Ayanokoji is curious about how ordinary students think and behave, but initially lacks practical experience with everyday social interaction. He uses conversations with Kujo to learn mundane topics such as clubs, spending habits, ice cream, conversations about girls, and casual expressions. 8 9
He readily imitates behavior he considers normal. After Kujo drops a spoon, Ayanokoji repeats the gesture and similarly asks an attendant for a replacement rather than picking it up. He later consciously mimics Kujo's phrasing when speaking to Horikita Suzune. 9 17
Despite his detached manner, Ayanokoji develops a genuine curiosity toward Kujo. He considers him unlike other students—not because Kujo is unquestionably superior in academics or physical ability, but because of his extensive information network, awareness of his limits, and ability to gather reliable allies. 41
Abilities & Skills
Academic Ability
Ayanokoji possesses exceptional academic ability and studies material beyond the scope of the current examinations. 39
- Able to casually study subjects not included on the exam syllabus. 39
- Earned exactly 50 points in every entrance-exam subject, concealing his actual ability. 17
- Helps defuse a tense Class D study session by exposing Horikita's error. 43
Athletic Ability
Ayanokoji has substantial hidden physical ability, demonstrated in both regular morning exercise and tennis. 11 22
- Participates in morning runs with Kujo and Koenji. 11 35
- Holds Kujo to a scoreless tennis match lasting four hours. 22
- His performance surprises Horikita Suzune and reveals strength he had not previously displayed. 22
Observation and Social Learning
Ayanokoji deliberately studies ordinary behavior and adapts it for his own interactions. 8 9
- Uses commonplace topics, such as clubs and school rumors, as conversational openings. 8
- Learns how to eat ice cream and use a straw by observing Kujo. 9
- Mimics Kujo's gestures and rhetorical style to appear more like a normal student. 9 17
- Recognizes that Kujo's information about classmates extends even to seemingly unimportant students. 35
Relationships
- Kujo Makoto — His first friend at school. Kujo introduces him to ordinary student life, while Ayanokoji becomes increasingly interested in Kujo's motives and knowledge. They exchange frequent messages, run together, and cooperate on exam discussions. 8 11 35 39
- Koenji Rokusuke — Morning-running companion alongside Kujo; Ayanokoji observes Koenji's eccentric behavior and analytical ability. 11 35
- Horikita Suzune — Classmate and fellow Class D leader. Ayanokoji is repeatedly drawn into her class-improvement efforts, though he claims he was forced into the leadership role. 17 35 43
- Shiina Hiyori — Kujo's girlfriend and a friendly acquaintance. She provides him breakfast during Kujo's morning exercise and asks him about his home life. 12
- Ichinose Honami — Acquaintance from inter-class strategy meetings and library study sessions. 39
- Horikita Manabu — The Student Council President investigates Ayanokoji's hidden entrance-exam ability and invites him to join the Student Council; Ayanokoji refuses. 17
Story Role / Major Arcs
First Meeting with Kujo
Ayanokoji meets Kujo in the cafeteria while seeking to understand normal students' perspectives. Their discussion of points, school rumors, and Class A becomes the foundation of Ayanokoji's first friendship at the school. 8

Ayanokoji joins Kujo and Hiyori at the tennis court and plays Kujo in an intense, unscored match that continues for four hours, revealing his concealed skill. 22
Notable Quotes

“Hiding one's true depth is an excellent talent. Perhaps I was capable of divination all along.” 9
