Hiyori entered Advanced Nurturing High School as an isolated but deeply passionate reader. Though content with books and solitude, she had not made a friend during her first days at school and gradually realized that she wanted companionship. 3

After losing her cherished ginkgo-leaf bookmark, Hiyori returned to Class C and saw Kujo Makoto cleaning the classroom. The bookmark was restored to her desk the following day, carefully secured under a book; she suspected Kujo had returned it, and the incident became the origin of her feelings for him. 3

Concerned by Class C's violent atmosphere and Ryuen Kakeru's conduct, Hiyori attempted to obtain help for an injured classmate during the karaoke-parlor incident.
