Background

Tang Yu was an ordinary high school student in China until a car accident led to his transmigration into a familiar anime world. Upon arriving at Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing High School, he awakened the Emotion Collection System, which converts others' emotional reactions into points for upgrades and purchases. His initial objective was to gather one million points and unlock the system's full form 1.

Although he placed among the top three in the entrance examination, the school assigned him to Class D because of his extreme individualism and lack of team spirit. Chabashira Sae made clear that leading Class D upward would also improve his personal standing, prompting Tang Yu to turn the class into both a strategic asset and an environment rich in emotional stimuli 1.

Appearance

Tang Yu is a black-haired, dark-eyed boy with sharp facial features. His faint, difficult-to-read smile and composed bearing give him an inscrutable impression 2.

  • Black hair and dark eyes 2
  • Sharp facial features 2
  • Usually wears the standard school uniform; he later enhances one uniform's fabric for a crisper appearance 21
  • Maintains an outwardly calm expression even when concealing system use or responding to threats 1 37

Personality

Tang Yu is highly intelligent, calculating, and attentive to emotional details. Early in his time at the school, he deliberately provokes strong reactions to harvest Emotion Points and treats relationships as strategic opportunities. His rivalry with Horikita initially becomes a planned psychological pressure campaign, while his conversations with Ayanokoji are marked by mutual testing and concealed suspicion 3 17.

He is also adaptive and practical. Tang Yu readily forms temporary alliances with Class B, uses misinformation and decoys against stronger opponents, and obtains equipment through the Emotion Shop when ordinary resources are insufficient 6 7 13.

Over time, he becomes increasingly troubled by using people solely as sources of emotional energy. Horikita's breakdown makes him recognize the cruelty of his one-point suppression strategy, and he later adopts a view of competition that should strengthen both sides rather than destroy one. The system's later revelation—that emotional energy is a “Bridge of Human Connection”—reinforces this change 17 20 26.

Abilities & Skills

Emotion Collection System

Tang Yu's system collects Emotion Points from the emotional responses of others and converts them into attribute upgrades, abilities, items, and temporary skills.

  • Began with a daily collection limit of 2,000 points 2
  • Upgraded Agility from 7 to 8 for 200 points, significantly improving his coordination and movement 1 2
  • Exchanges points for legally documented items, including a laptop, cash, ropes, surveillance devices, and medical supplies 13 29 43
  • Can rapidly deplete its reserves when sustaining powerful abilities; Tsukishiro's interference during the debate drains points at 500 per second 44

Emotion Perception and Influence

Tang Yu can read, amplify, suggest, reflect, and weave emotions.

  • Emotion Perception — Detects real-time emotional fluctuations within ten meters and identifies concealed hostility, fear, jealousy, or deception 1 2
  • Emotion Influence / Suggestion — Reinforces an existing emotional tendency or plants a simple tendency; it cannot directly control a person's thoughts 3 4
  • Emotion Manipulation — Briefly induces a strong emotion, such as hesitation, to interrupt an opponent's actions 13
  • Emotion Mirror — Reflects emotions back at the source, causing aggressors to confront their own fear or malice 22 23
  • Emotion Weaving — Blends multiple emotional states to create effects such as trust, anxiety, or group unity 23 25

Tang Yu can connect people emotionally and apply effects across groups.

  • Emotional Link — Creates a short, deep connection with one person; he uses it to understand Horikita's insecurity and support Karuizawa 10 17 28
  • Group Emotion Influence — Affects several people in a small radius, though its range and duration are limited 17
  • Emotion Field — Alters the emotional atmosphere of an area, helping calm allies or influence decisions 25 29
  • Emotion Weaving Network — Perceives and influences multiple people simultaneously; it also allows Tang Yu to send encouragement to Karuizawa over distance 34 35
  • Group Emotion Resonance — Synchronizes Class D's emotional state into a defensive network against Tsukishiro's mental interference 39 40
  • Heart Connection Network — Perceives and adjusts the strength of emotional bonds after the system unlocks Ultimate Authority 26

Mental Defense and Memory Projection

Tang Yu develops defenses against Tsukishiro Shuhei's mental abilities.

  • Emotion Shield — Resists mental detection and suggestion, though Tsukishiro can damage it with a sufficiently powerful attack 37 39
  • Memory Projection — Converts emotions and memories into tangible images; Tang Yu uses Kei's nightmares to terrify and incapacitate her captors 46 47
  • Group Consciousness Link — Temporarily synchronizes thought patterns among multiple people; its cost of 10,000 points per minute makes it impractical for prolonged use 44 45

Combat Ability

Tang Yu combines system-enhanced physicality with redeemed martial arts and predictive skills.

  • Runs 50 meters in 5.91 seconds and achieves a 2.8-meter standing long jump after improving his Agility 2
  • Uses evasive footwork to defeat three attackers without directly striking them 2
  • Temporarily gains Shaolin Ancient Martial Arts Mastery and defeats drug-enhanced Ryuen in the Class Competition 15
  • Uses Wing Chun to defeat Ryuen and four Class C students in Tokyo 19 20
  • Redeems Combat Prediction and Adrenaline Surge to fight through Ryuen's Gymnasium trap, though thirty opponents eventually overwhelm him before Ayanokoji arrives 41

Cyberwarfare

Tang Yu redeems top-tier hacking ability after uncovering Tsukishiro's surveillance system.

  • Analyzes the surveillance network and recognizes Tsukishiro's AI-based defenses 47
  • Possesses quantum-encryption cracking capability through the Top-tier Cyber Warfare Expert skill 47
  • Is forced offline by Tsukishiro's logic bomb during their initial digital confrontation 47

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Emotion Shop laptop — A high-end Alienware x15 R2 with a formal purchase record 13
  • System-generated cash — Verifiable currency used for resources and off-campus arrangements 13 29
  • Ropes, pitons, and climbing gear — Used during the Class D–Class B assault on the Southeast Warehouse 13
  • Off-campus apartment — Purchased for privacy, safety, and as a refuge for Karuizawa; later equipped with surveillance and security systems 29 30
  • Encrypted spare phone and evidence backups — Used to preserve recordings and communication records implicating Ryuen's outside collaborators 35
  • Pager from Ayanokoji — Provided for emergencies during the conflict with Tsukishiro 46

  • Ayanokoji Kiyotaka — A wary counterpart and eventual ally. They repeatedly probe each other's hidden abilities, cooperate during special exams, and unite against Tsukishiro 1 26 44.
  • Karuizawa Kei — Secret ally whom Tang Yu protects from Ryuen's threats and Tsukishiro's experiments. Their relationship grows from an information exchange into deep trust and mutual affection 23 34 46.
  • Honami Ichinose — Class B leader and cooperative ally during the deserted-island examination; Tang Yu later supports her after she confesses her past cheating incident 6 13 28.
