Background & History
Early life and recruitment
At age six, Xie Yue possessed the top-tier Moon Blade Martial Soul and innate soul power rank nine. He grew up alongside Hu Liena and Yan, and was among the orphanage children selected for exceptional treatment after their awakenings. He immediately recognized the significance of Yan’s innate full soul power and dual-attribute Flame Overlord Martial Soul. 1 4
Xie Yue and Hu Liena were moved into separate rooms with Yan before being received by Chrysanthemum Douluo Yue Guan and Pope Bibi Dong. While Hu Liena became Bibi Dong’s nominal disciple, Xie Yue was ordered into Martial Soul Hall Academy’s Core Class with the highest standard of resource allocation. He accepted eagerly, determined to cultivate and eventually serve Martial Soul Hall. 2 4
First Soul Ring
Xie Yue reached level ten before the party’s Soul Hunting Forest expedition. Seeking an attack- and speed-oriented skill suited to the Moon Blade, he selected the 500-year Shadow Moon Wolf as his target. 7 8
After killing the Shadow Moon Wolf and absorbing its Soul Ring, he gained Shadow Moon Consecutive Slash and advanced to level thirteen. The skill’s sharp, shadow-infused crescent blades cut through two small trees from seven or eight meters away. 11
Academy years
At Spirit Hall Academy, Xie Yue entered the first-year Primary Academy Core Class with Yan. He intervened when a student harassed Hu Liena, forcing the boy away from her seat. When that student’s older brother, Zhao Leshan, later attacked them, Xie Yue attempted to defend himself with Shadow Moon Consecutive Slash but missed due to Zhao Leshan’s vibration-based skill; Yan then ended the fight with a single punch. 17 18
Xie Yue recognized the enormous gap between himself and Yan, but did not become resentful. Instead, he encouraged Yan’s diligence and chose to focus on his own soul power cultivation rather than try to endure Yan’s extreme body-training regimen. 16 19 20
After two years, Xie Yue reached level eighteen. Although discouraged by Yan’s rapid advancement, he was encouraged by the growing resonance between his Moon Blade and Hu Liena’s Demon Fox Martial Soul. Their sibling bond gave them the potential to develop a highly compatible Spirit Fusion Skill. 24
Golden Generation
Xie Yue later advanced to the Grand Soul Master realm and enrolled in the Advanced Academy with Hu Liena. The three youths received missions directly from Martial Soul Hall, with Resak serving as their supervisor and cultivation teacher. 27
Three years later, Xie Yue had become a level 53 Soul King. Pope Bibi Dong awarded him, Hu Liena, and Yan the Purple Record Medal, then formally crowned them Martial Soul Hall’s Golden Generation. By this point, his and Hu Liena’s Spirit Fusion Skill, Demon Charm, was becoming increasingly refined. 51 52
Strained friendship with Yan
As Yan’s strength and conflict with Martial Soul Hall escalated, Xie Yue’s relationship with him deteriorated. He still attempted to reason with Yan after Yan killed the Pope Palace guards, but Yan dismissed his concerns and demanded an audience with Bibi Dong. 176
When Bibi Dong assigned Yan and his Soul Master legion to the front against the Clear Sky Sect, Xie Yue recognized that her generous promises could conceal hostile intentions. However, he ultimately chose not to warn Yan, deciding that protecting his own position within Martial Soul Hall was more important than restoring their former closeness. 177

Personality

He is strongly protective of Hu Liena and readily confronts people who mistreat her. At the same time, he is capable of self-awareness: after seeing Yan’s strength and training intensity, he admits his own limits rather than forcing himself into a regimen he cannot sustain. 17 20
He initially supports Yan without jealousy, encouraging him to keep training despite their widening difference in talent. Over time, however, his growing position within Martial Soul Hall makes him more pragmatic and guarded, culminating in his decision not to risk himself by warning Yan of Bibi Dong’s likely schemes. 16 24 177
