Background / History

Changsun is a member of the powerful Changsun Lineage. Her father is Marquis Qinghe, whose family controls the northwestern cities of Tailiang, Qinghe, and Zangchuan; her elder brother, Marquis Taiping, manages the lineage’s affairs in the imperial city. 8 12

As Empress Dowager, Changsun presides over Weiyang Palace. Qing Ling, whom she personally trained and raised, has managed the palace’s affairs and guarded her safety for years. 7 12

Changsun first encounters Ning Chen after he collides with her in the palace. Amused by his attachment to a single copper coin, she takes the coin and assigns him to serve at Weiyang Palace, warning him to observe palace rules. 3

She observes strict court boundaries despite her influence. After warning the Xia Emperor of the omen, she withdraws before ministers are received, believing it improper for the Empress to remain during discussions of state affairs. 6

Beneath her political caution, Changsun is deeply protective of those under her care. Qing Ling’s near-fatal defense leaves her grief-stricken, while Ning Chen’s unexpected usefulness leads her to conceal both his astronomical warning and his role in saving Qing Ling so that his sudden merit will not make him a target. 8 9 12

Yinghuo Shouxin

Qing Ling wakes Changsun to show her Mars nearing the Heart Constellation Emperor Star. After interrogating Ning Chen and receiving his certainty that the ominous alignment will occur, Changsun goes to Heavenly Edict Hall to warn the Xia Emperor. 5

Secret Decree and Assassination Attempt

Changsun leaves the palace to deliver the Xia Emperor’s secret decree to Marquis Qinghe, ordering covert northern reinforcements against the unrest of the Northern Mongol Royal Court. Her route is exposed, and Qing Ling is gravely wounded protecting her from four assassins. 7 8

Unable to safely return to Changsun Manor, Changsun hides her location, investigates the plot behind the attack, and sends Ning Chen to find Marquis Taiping personally. 9 10

Reunion with Marquis Taiping

After Ning Chen reaches Changsun Manor and brings Marquis Taiping to Du'an Pharmacy, Changsun reunites with her elder brother. Their meeting restores contact with the Changsun Lineage during the crisis. 12

Imperial City Unrest

During the later military lockdown of the Imperial City, an Imperial Guard commander blocks Changsun from leaving Weiyang Palace. 155
