Background / History

Rinya spent more than ten years in the White Room and describes himself as having “conquered” it. His White Room upbringing shaped his harsh survival-of-the-fittest outlook, extraordinary physical conditioning, psychological techniques, and internal-energy abilities. He also refers to having lived two lives and regards his enrollment as a chance to begin again. 4 5 24

He entered Advanced Nurturing High School under a forged identity. When Chairman Sakayanagi confronted him, Rinya accepted an arrangement to protect Sakayanagi Arisu’s path to a Class A graduation, but specifically chose enrollment in Class D rather than Class A. Sakayanagi provided his new ID card and personal contact information; Rinya changed the name on the card from “01” to “Rinya.” 2

Initially, Rinya concealed much of his capability behind an unkempt appearance, indifference toward classmates, and deliberately managed exam results. He gradually established influence in Class D by purchasing loyalty, exploiting secrets, and turning classmates into dependent allies or informants. 5 6 8 11
