Background / History
Class D begins the school year as the lowest-performing first-year class. During the student council recruitment event, several of its students heckle Manabu Horikita’s speech while the other first-year classes remain quiet. Yousuke Hirata attempts to stop the disruption, but Haruki Yamauchi dismisses his concerns. 18
The class’s disciplinary problems become more explicit during swimming season. Haruka Hasebe reports that several Class D boys ogle the girls, make vulgar remarks, and create a degrading “chest ranking.” 22 Yuki Gyakukai’s group records the boys’ conduct, confronts the class, and forces apologies by threatening to submit the footage as evidence. Hirata pays Gyakukai 50,000 points to resolve the matter. 23 24
At the first monthly point distribution, Class D receives no personal-point increase because its class points have fallen to zero. 26 Class C subsequently exploits its footage of the earlier harassment to pressure Class D, provoking repeated conflicts and causing some students to skip school for extended periods. 25
During the midterm period, Class D relies on obtained past exam papers and relaxes its study efforts. The papers are reported to the student council before the exam, resulting in a different test than the class expected. 41 46 Internal blame escalates into violence against Hirata, and seven students fail the midterms. 46 47 The expulsions reduce the class from 40 students to 33. 48
