Background / History

Horikita enters Advanced Nurturing High School in Class D. Although she achieves excellent entrance-exam results, tying for third place, she considers her placement in the lowest-ranked class a mistake and confronts Chabashira Sae about it. Chabashira tells her that academic scores alone do not determine class placement and challenges her to raise Class D above Class A if she wishes to graduate from Class A. 11

Initially, Horikita remains detached from her classmates and rejects Kushida Kikyo’s attempts at friendship. Her ambition to reach Class A nevertheless leads her to take an interest in Class D’s collective performance, especially when poor grades threaten expulsions. 5 11 13
