Background / History

Hals's earliest memories are defined by violence and loss. As a child, he overheard his parents arguing over the danger surrounding their family; his mother was killed by an arrow while protecting him, after which Royce took him away. Hals later recounts being a war orphan trafficked through a circus and placed with an old man who subjected him to daily torture, leaving scars across his body and a brand on his neck. 9 67

After escaping, Hals was brought into Martial Soul Hall by Qian Xunji. He awakened the Soul-Guiding Lantern and began cultivating, but recognized that Qian Xunji regarded him as a tool to be used or discarded. 9

His outlook changed when he encountered the young Bibi Dong. Her simple offer to share a chicken cutlet gave him hope, motivating him to train obsessively until he became one of Spirit Hall's strongest young talents. As an adult, he became Bibi Dong's servant, living in a prison-like hut beside her quarters and obeying her commands with absolute deference. 1 9

Hals later joined Spirit Hall's Criminal Law Division, later renamed the Enforcement Department. His ruthless efficiency and willingness to punish even allied personnel who harmed Spirit Hall's interests earned him the nickname “Hunting Dog,” while alienating many of the Hall's higher-ranking figures. 157

Appearance

Hals usually conceals himself under a dark green hooded robe, leaving only the green Soul Flames in his eye sockets visible. Outside his robe, he is pale, scarred, and visibly marked by the abuse of his childhood. 2 9 12

  • A scar-covered pale face and a brand on his neck. 9
  • Short pale-green hair streaked with white; it is usually hidden beneath his hood. 63 116
  • Soul Flames often replace his eyes, ranging from sickly green to green-and-ghostly-blue. 12 63
  • Stands close to two meters tall normally; his Martial Soul Avatar can exceed three meters. 17 116
  • Possesses a prosthetic right hand. 29
  • In his “Demon King” form, his flesh recedes into a skeletal body and a tattered Dragon Wing emerges from his back. 66 116

Personality

Hals is quiet, formal, and intensely intimidating. He rarely wastes words, habitually addresses Bibi Dong as “Master,” and immediately acts when he believes she is threatened. His loyalty gradually develops beyond duty into deep affection and protectiveness. 1 4 65 68

His trauma manifests in cruelty toward enemies and a possessive fixation on souls. Hals is capable of taking pleasure in fear, torture, and the taste of powerful souls, especially when his hunger overwhelms his restraint. Yet he is not indiscriminately violent at all times: before his loss of control, he deliberately targeted criminals rather than innocent civilians, and he has shown mercy to defeated opponents such as Ning Songxi. 12 26 43 46

He is also patient and calculating when necessary. In Star Luo City, he concealed his identity as “Yu Hun,” feigned inexperience as an instructor, and used the academy position as cover for his mission. 27

Hals fears losing control of himself. After a killing spree in Nork Town, he experienced panic rather than satisfaction and resolved to strengthen himself so that his hunger would not cause another incident. His later confrontation with another “Hals” reveals that discarded emotions and memories have become a separate manifestation within his consciousness. 47 135

Abilities & Skills

Soul-Guiding Lantern

Hals's Martial Soul is the Soul-Guiding Lantern, a lantern that detects, extracts, imprisons, and manipulates souls.

  • Draws souls from corpses and absorbs them into the lantern; Hals claims that no soul can escape his control. 3 4 116
  • Can restrain a Soul Beast's soul, reducing resistance while another person absorbs its Soul Ring. 5
  • Stores souls as fuel, followers, weapons, or material for physical manifestations. 10 12
  • Can form ice-crystal bodies for captured souls; these constructs regenerate so long as their soul power remains. 13
  • Its proximity can overwhelm or over-nourish others, causing dizziness and nosebleeds. 10
  • Excessive use strains Hals's soul and can leave him exhausted or unable to remain conscious. 8 125

Soul Flame and Soul Force

Hals's green Soul Flame reflects his power over souls and his own desires.

  • His gaze can directly affect an opponent's mind or soul, causing dizziness even in a Spirit Saint. 25 32
  • The flames intensify his desires, including his hunger for souls; this hunger can escalate into a predatory, irrational state. 12 45 46
  • He can burn imprisoned souls to reinforce his bones, sacrificing the soul permanently and enduring severe pain in exchange for extreme physical hardness. 12
  • Soul Essence from the lantern can reinforce his hook-chain and sustain prolonged physical attacks. 22 58

Black Mist and Realm of the Dead

Hals can transform into or spread Black Mist infused with Soul Force and Death Force.

  • Uses it for stealth, rapid repositioning, and concealment from enemy senses. 2 23 61
  • His eighth-ring Realm of the Dead corrupts the terrain, amplifies soul-based power, and suppresses living beings within its range. 14
  • The mist can weaken groups of Soul Masters while leaving Hals unaffected. 115
  • Sustaining larger Black Mist domains rapidly consumes his Soul Power and can leave him severely fatigued. 61 125

Soul Manipulation and Undead Servants

Hals can turn captured souls and bodies into servants, puppets, or combat units.

  • Yellow Spring Pure Land releases and directs lantern-bound souls against enemies; he first used it to annihilate a wolf pack threatening Bibi Dong. 4
  • Can control corpses and turn victims into puppets, including using Heizi as an unwitting infiltrator against the Stare Chief. 45 51
  • Summons and commands solidified soul bodies, including a Titan Giant Ape Undead Thrall powerful enough to confront a Soul Douluo. 17 18
  • Created Sion from his dormant War Machine and ordered it to guard the Shadow Isles and destroy invaders. 160

Martial Soul True Body and Demon King Form

Hals's seventh ring grants his Martial Soul True Body, greatly increasing his physical scale and soul-harvesting ability.

  • Transforms him into a skeletal, flame-covered figure capable of harvesting complete souls from large groups. 10
  • Enlarges his body to approximately three meters and manifests an altered robe, reinforced hook, and Dragon Wing. 58 66 116
  • Allows him to combine Soul Power, Soul Force, Frost Force, and Death Force for overwhelming physical force. 151 159
  • The transformation is costly when used at full output and can leave him weakened after battle. 66

Death Sentence / Death Judgment

Hals's fifth-ring execution skill drags a target's soul into a judgment space or pins it for direct execution.

  • Death Sentence bound a Spirit Saint's soul to a cross within a torture-like soul space before Hals absorbed it. 8
  • Death Judgment immobilized Snake Cave Douluo with a bloodstained cross, killed him through the soul, and fed his soul to the lantern. 116
  • Is especially dangerous against enemies whose souls have already been weakened or damaged. 116

Soul-Quelling Roar and Soul Tentacles

Hals possesses self-created and ring-based techniques that attack the soul directly.

  • Soul-Quelling Roar is a soundless soul attack that can stagger even Titled Douluo-level opponents. 116 142
  • His sixth-ring skill manifests translucent Soul Tentacles that strike immobilized or weakened targets. 142
  • His fourth-ring Whisper can create a mental disturbance that leaves targets dizzy and unable to control their Soul Power. 4 87

Death Dragon Power

After absorbing the Death Dragon's Soul Ring, Hals gained Death Force and a ninth-ring dragon ability.

  • His ninth ring can summon an illusory blue dragon that breathes extreme cold. 65 116
  • The Death Dragon's consciousness and power were integrated into Hals's Soul Sea. 62
  • His ninth ring's dragon pattern can induce a brief, dangerous lapse in anyone who looks directly at it. 62

Runes and Formations

Hals possesses Rune knowledge connected to the transformation of his power and the construction of the Shadow Isles.

  • Rune knowledge flooded into his consciousness through an inherited memory, nearly scattering his unusually powerful soul. 138
  • He used Runes to modify the enormous Black Iron Gate within the Shadow Isles. 159
  • Can operate large formations by feeding them Soul Force and Soul Power, though doing so can destabilize the Frost Force and Death Force within his body. 151
