Ch. 221Our Clubroom Is About to Be Smashed to Pieces
Chapter Summary
Key Plot Points and Events
Shen Yu examines Wu’s S-rank Character Card and learns more about its powerful fate-manipulation ability. Wu can alter fate by paying a price, sacrificing anything he possesses—including abstract assets such as lifespan, intelligence, relationships, or even the resources of enemies he has defeated. Although this ability is extremely powerful, Wu himself remains physically fragile and lacks combat ability. His talking Crow is intelligent but has little more strength than an ordinary bird.
To protect Wu, Shen Yu creates and assigns three associated characters at Headquarters:
- Bo, a twenty-nine-year-old A-rank Contract Anomalist and former mercenary who owes his life to Wu and has sworn to protect him.
- Niaoniao, a nineteen-year-old C-rank martial artist, member of the Occult Society, and enthusiastic admirer of both the Chairman and Wu.
- Ba Shen, a thirty-year-old logistics employee who is hardworking but primarily motivated by money.
After their placement, Wu receives several urgent calls. Niaoniao warns him that Bo is close to destroying their clubroom, while Ba Shen complains emotionally about the stressful situation and his rapidly thinning hair. Wu realizes that Bo’s anxiety is the likely cause of the chaos. He reveals that he is in Australia investigating the Eternal Kingdom, a dangerous organization that uses anomalies to create incidents and recruit followers.
Wu decides to summon Bo to Australia, both to reassure him and because he needs his assistance. He then leaves the fortune-telling shop with Crow. An agent of the Eternal Kingdom arrives to escort him to their headquarters, a remote countryside resort donated by one of the organization’s believers. Though the resort appears ordinary from outside, its interior has been transformed into an ominous cult-like base covered in mysterious symbols and patterns.
Character Developments
- Wu is established as a powerful but physically vulnerable figure whose fate-manipulation ability requires significant sacrifice. He remains calm, perceptive, and willing to use others strategically, but he also shows concern for the people connected to him by giving them background stories and arranging protection.
- Bo is revealed to be deeply devoted to Wu and highly protective of him. His concern is so intense that it threatens to cause conflict at Headquarters.
- Niaoniao is energetic, affectionate, and eager to follow Wu, despite normally disliking distant missions. Her admiration for Wu and Bo is clear.
- Ba Shen provides comic relief through his exaggerated complaints, while also showing that the Headquarters situation has become genuinely stressful.
- Shen Yu demonstrates increasing skill in constructing characters and manipulating circumstances, though he remains aware that his hastily created backstories are imperfect.
Significant Themes
- The cost of altering fate: Power is directly tied to sacrifice, and even intangible possessions can become currency.
- Power versus vulnerability: Wu possesses an extraordinary supernatural ability but lacks physical strength, making reliable allies essential.
- Possession and control: The ability to use defeated enemies and their resources as payment introduces a disturbing system in which power can be gained by controlling others.
- Loyalty and relationships: Bo, Niaoniao, and Ba Shen’s reactions show that Wu has become the center of a small but emotionally invested group.
- Cultism and dangerous cooperation with anomalies: The Eternal Kingdom’s willingness to worship and cooperate with anomalies reflects humanity’s dangerous desire to obtain power through forces it cannot truly control.
Character Interactions
Wu speaks with Niaoniao, Ba Shen, and Bo over the phone. Niaoniao and Ba Shen pressure him to return, while Bo quietly confirms his presence and concern. Wu teases out Bo’s location and then directly orders him to come to Australia. The calls highlight the group’s contrasting personalities: Niaoniao is lively, Ba Shen is anxious and dramatic, and Bo is silent but fiercely protective. The chapter ends with Wu entering the Eternal Kingdom’s headquarters, setting up his infiltration and confrontation with the organization.
