Background
Ji Congyun was an orphan whom the old chief of the Raging Tide Gang found nearly frozen during a heavy snowfall in Huaiyang. He was raised alongside Li Yuanli, Li Yuanxiang, and their brother, becoming family despite having no blood relation to them. 404
His talent initially appeared ordinary: while his brothers learned the Moon Scooping Swordplay in half a month, Ji Congyun required half a year. His slow progress came from an unusual approach to martial arts—rather than imitate forms, he sought the reason behind every movement, qi circulation, and expenditure of force. 404
At eighteen, he displayed his true ability by holding back Black Tiger Gang reinforcements alone with his sword, allowing Li Yuanli and the Raging Tide Gang members to escape an ambush and seek aid. 404
Ji Congyun later married Xixi, who suffered from an incurable illness. Knowing their time together was limited, the pair chose to cherish each day; after her death, Ji Congyun continued living seriously in her memory. His devotion became the foundation of his Affectionate Sword Dao. 246 404
Appearance
Ji Congyun is a tall, handsome man with a heroic and unrestrained bearing. He is most often recognized by his blue robes, bamboo-sheathed longsword, and loose hair falling over his shoulders. 169
- Usually wears blue robes or a plain blue cloth robe. 169 398
- Carries a three-foot longsword with a bamboo handle and sheath. 173
- Has calm, indifferent eyes that carry a chilling Sword Intent in battle. 169
- His usual demeanor is relaxed and approachable, contrasting sharply with the overwhelming pressure of his drawn sword. 55
Personality
Ji Congyun is gentle, courteous, and considerate even toward servants and errand boys. He treats subordinates with respect and places their lives above reputation or personal gain. 55
He is also chivalrous and decisive. Learning that Black Wind Stronghold had been committing atrocities, he entered the mountain alone, eliminated its bandits, and investigated the organization behind them. 169 At Brightmoon Gorge, he publicly challenged Meng Yuezhuo over the abduction of women and deliberately drew the Whale Gang’s strongest fighters away so Shen Yi and A' Yue could infiltrate the stronghold. 172 173
Despite his fame, Ji Congyun has little interest in status. He rejects the expectation that he become the Raging Tide Gang’s fourth leader, preferring to fish, grow flowers, cook, brew wine, and live beside Xixi’s grave on River Blocking Island. 398 399
His grief for Xixi remains central to his life, but it does not make him passive. He carries her memory as a reason to survive, improve, and see the world on her behalf. 341 400
Abilities & Skills
Affectionate Sword Dao
Ji Congyun’s Martial Dao is founded on unwavering affection. His Sword Intent formed before his Outer Core cultivation had fully accumulated, placing his state of mind ahead of his physical foundation. 246
- His Sword Intent becomes purer and stronger under life-threatening pressure. 342 403
- His strength can continue rising during an extended duel, making him especially dangerous if an opponent fails to defeat him quickly. 403
- His Sword Dao is described as natural and harmonious, like spring breeze, rain, a calm lake, and moonlight. 341 403
- His main weakness is comparatively lesser true-qi accumulation and physical tempering than his Sword Intent and comprehension. 403
Raging Tide Swordsmanship
Ji Congyun’s swordsmanship combines soft-over-hard principles, seamless footwork, and overwhelming waves of sword qi. 55 341
- Can release dense, tangible sword qi in a tide-like barrage capable of overwhelming ordinary Innate Realm fighters. 55
- His swordplay integrates movement, defense, and offense; retreating footwork can simultaneously disrupt an opponent’s momentum and create counterattack opportunities. 341
- Defeated the Outer Core expert Meng Yuezhuo in a single strike, piercing his protective force and injuring his lungs with lingering sword energy. 173
- Used sword rain to break Chu Tianxiong’s overwhelming true-qi assault before piercing him through the chest. 342
Eight Hundred Li Flowing Moon Lake
Ji Congyun can condense his Affectionate Sword Dao into the image of the Eight Hundred Li Flowing Moon Lake, turning calm stillness into all-pervading sword intent. 341 404
- Its aura can neutralize an opponent’s oppressive presence, causing Chu Tianxiong’s surging-river intent to subside within thirty feet of him. 341
- He employed it as a decisive counter to Xu Jiansheng’s Surging Tides of the Sword, ending their duel in a draw. 404
- Its sword light manifests as rain and mist: pervasive, subtle, and increasingly fierce as his intent grows. 403
Mountain-Shaking Fist
Ji Congyun is also proficient in fist techniques, using the Mountain-Shaking Fist to suppress opponents with collapsing-mountain force. 191
- He infused fist intent into his attacks, allowing his strikes to pursue Shen Yi and pressure both body and spirit. 191
- His fist technique was strong enough to shatter Shen Yi’s sword qi and disperse the Flowing Cloud Sword’s pressure. 191
Mental Resilience
Ji Congyun’s extreme-emotion cultivation path grants him exceptional resistance to mental interference. 683
- He remained lucid within the Joyful Union Sect’s desire array, using Sword Intent to keep his spiritual platform clear. 683
- He escaped the array while supporting the affected Chen Zhi'ang. 683
Strategy and Leadership
Ji Congyun is an effective field commander who favors solutions that protect his allies from unnecessary losses. 173 340
- Lured Jiang Tianliu and multiple Whale Gang experts away from Brightmoon Gorge to create an opening for Shen Yi’s rescue mission. 173 174
- Accepted a duel with Chu Tianxiong because open war against the Whale Gang and Pacification Office would have devastated the Raging Tide Gang. 340
- His prestige within the gang was great enough that Li Yuantong entrusted all eastern-expansion decisions to him. 340
Equipment / Items
- Bamboo-handled longsword and bamboo sheath — Ji Congyun’s signature weapon, used to channel his rain- and tide-like Sword Intent. 173
- Wine pot / wineskin — He regularly carries wine, particularly while remembering Xixi or sharing drinks with friends. 169 338
- Moonlit Intoxication — A wine closely associated with his remembrance of Xixi. 181 338

- Xixi — His late wife. Her illness and death shaped his Affectionate Sword Dao; Ji Congyun preserves her memory through cooking, wine, and life beside her grave. 400 404

- Li Yuanxiang — Adoptive brother and the Raging Tide Gang’s Second Leader. He brought food to Ji Congyun while the latter recovered from his duel with Xu Jiansheng. 405
- Qin Jianghe — Fellow Raging Tide Gang member and Broken Blade Hall master. Ji Congyun protected Qin Jianghe after Li Wudang left him severely injured and without an arm. 55
- Wei Lin — A bereaved child placed in Ji Congyun’s care by Shen Yi. Ji Congyun agreed to shelter him and may eventually pass on his legacy. 338 344
- A' Yue — Shen Yi’s companion and Ji Congyun’s friend. They cooperated during the Brightmoon Gorge operation and later shared meals and wine on River Blocking Island. 169 181 400
- Chen Zhi'ang — Ally in the investigation of the Martial Arts Conference. Ji Congyun helped him escape the Joyful Union Sect’s desire array. 682 683
- Chu Tianxiong — Whale Gang chief and rival. Ji Congyun defeated him in their agreed duel, though Shen Yi had to intervene when Ling Wuxiang attempted to violate the agreement and kill him. 340 342
Story Role / Major Arcs
Broken Blade Hall
Ji Congyun arrived from the Raging Tide main faction to temporarily manage Broken Blade Hall and the Clear River area after Qin Jianghe was maimed by Li Wudang. He met Shen Yi when Shen returned the Broken Blade, then demonstrated his formidable sword qi at Shen Yi’s request. 55
After Shen Yi rose rapidly through the Heaven’s Mystery Rankings, Ji Congyun expressed admiration rather than jealousy and arranged for Broken Blade Hall to monitor Shen Yi’s movements in case he needed help. 88
Conflict with the Whale Gang
Ji Congyun gained widespread fame by killing the Whale Gang’s four great protectors, exposing his Outer Force Realm strength and rising to twenty-first on the Qilin Rankings. 90
While traveling toward White Emperor City, he discovered Black Wind Stronghold’s atrocities and independently wiped out most of its bandits. His reunion with Shen Yi led to their joint investigation of the stronghold and the missing women connected to Brightmoon Gorge. 169
At Brightmoon Gorge, he challenged the Whale Gang alone and drew Jiang Tianliu’s forces away from the mountain. This allowed Shen Yi and A' Yue to infiltrate the stronghold, rescue Ah-Huo, and eliminate Meng Yuezhuo. 172 173 174
Rise of “Overturning Clouds and Rain”
Ji Congyun later beheaded the Whale Gang Grandmaster Jiang Tianliu during the defense of Brightmoon Gorge. The feat earned him the reputation “Overturning Clouds and Rain, Sword Qi Blocking the River” and elevated him to second on the Qilin Rankings. 287
When the Whale Gang and Pacification Office pressured the Raging Tide Gang over the destruction of a passenger ship, Ji Congyun agreed to duel Chu Tianxiong to prevent a full-scale war. He endured Chu’s overwhelming true-qi assault, found a flaw, and defeated him with a decisive sword thrust. 340 342
Ling Wuxiang then broke the duel’s terms and attempted to kill Ji Congyun, but Shen Yi intervened in disguise and drove the Great Grandmaster away. 342 343
River Blocking Island
After the conflict, Ji Congyun withdrew to a simple wooden house on River Blocking Island rather than occupy the Raging Tide Gang’s grand manor. He lived beside Xixi’s grave, spending his days fishing, planting flowers, brewing wine, and visiting Wei Lin in Moonfall City. 398 399
He fought Mount Luo swordsman Xu Jiansheng to a bloody draw. Although Ji Congyun declared himself inferior, Song Wen acknowledged that he had not lost. 403 404
While injured and isolated after the duel, Ji Congyun survived an assassination attempt by Raging Tide Gang conspirators when Shen Yi and A' Yue arrived to protect him. Li Yuanli subsequently used the incident to purge disloyal elements from the gang. 405 407
Later Appearances
Ji Congyun attended Shen Yi and A' Yue’s wedding with Qin Jianghe, bringing gifts and Moonlit Intoxication. 650 651
He later joined Chen Zhi'ang’s investigation into the Martial Arts Conference and escaped the Joyful Union Sect’s desire array while helping Chen Zhi'ang flee Taian Town. 682 683
